Do you think Jews are portrayed badly in television and movies?

I dont think so....I dont really know tho, I havent really seen that many Jewish people on t.v. that I know are Jewish....I think a lot of other ethnic groups are sometiems depicted poorly.

I don't think so, but I haven't seen many shows with Jewish characters in them.

I think there are pretty much a few depicted in t.v. and the movies. I've met a few in L.A. Also Mindy Cohn and Gene Simmon s and Paul Stanley of KISS are Jewish. Sure there could be a few more, but since there are so many in the entertainment/media industry, I don't think they're being discriminated against for the most part. Every once in a while there are some bigots who complain about "Hollywood and the media being owned by Jews..."

Actually, a good deal of Hollywood is in fact owned by Jewish people. This is coming from someone who is 'one of the people' (and one who happens to love one particular nasally Jewish actress). So, it's not really bigoted unless somebody actually complains about it. Just my 2 matzos... I mean, cents.

I'm not sure I understand the question or what you're asking but Jewish people were the creators, the CEO's of Hollywood. Is that a bad thing?

Jews have a big influence in Hollywood. Steven Speilberg and Jerry Seinfeld for example donate money to the Government of Israel. Jews also write, direct, and produce, so I don't think that they are going to purposely put their race in a negative light intentionally.

Does anyone remember the character Watto from the Star Wars "Phantom Menace" movie a few years ago? People complained that he was a stereotype of a Jewish person: a conniving con artist with an outsized "Jewish"-style nose, etc. I never really figured that in the movie, but I think because of the
"racially stereotypical" character of Jar Jar Binks, I think the PC crowds had a field day with just about everything else.

Yeah, I don't think there really is much discrimination at all against Jews in the entertainment world, seeing that there are lots of Jewish people in Hollywood, but what about discrimination against African-Americans or Latinos? Or Arabs?

I always thought that was absurd about Watto. Besides, if anything Watto was more of an Italian stereotype and as far as I'm concerned the Italians are the most stereotyped individuals on movies and television.

I just thought of one Jewish character who is portrayed in kind of a negative light. He's a teacher in some tv show about a high school in a bad part of Boston or something (can't remember the show's name). He plays a Jewish teacher who's always grumpy and is a bigot. I think he called one of the students the "N" word or something but I can't remember.

I love Jewish actors. I don't think they're really portrayed badly - but I'd love to see more of them! Actually, I'm in a little bit of trouble about this - I constantly get crushes on Jewish guys which could really prove to be a problem in the future! :) But anyway, I really enjoy people like Jon Stewart and Mandy Patinkin!

We were making up a list of famous Jews in my social sciences class. Here's what we came up with:

Ann Bancroft
Mel Brooks
Billy Crystal
Sammy Davis, Jr.
Neil Diamond
Fran Drescher
Albert Einstein
Mandy Patinkin
Gillda Radner
Winona Ryder
Adam Sandler
Barbra Streisand
Jon Stewart
Ben Stiller
Elizabeth Taylor
Gene Wilder

And a few others that I'm blanking out on at the moment. ;)

Or Arabs? Yeah, why is it that African Americans and Latinos are usually what ppl laugh at because of some silly/stereotypical comment or something in movies. And i havent seen ANY arabs in movies...or atleast not many.

Thought of another famous American Jew - STEVEN SPIELBERG!

African-Americans seem to me to be fairly represented. Come on, look at last years Oscars! Halle Berry, Denzel Washington, Sidney Poitier... (although it does seem pretty weird that they all won in the same year). We did a list on African-Americans too:

Will Smith
Tiger Woods
James Earl Jones
Whitney Huston
Alfre Woodard
Samuel L. Jackson
Michael Jordan
Brandy
Laurence Fishbourne
Scatman Corothers
Hattie McDaniel
Magic Johnson
Louis Armstrong
Dizzy Gillespie
Whoopie Goldberg
Nat King Cole
Natalie Cole
Sammy Davis Jr
Lena Horne
Danny Glover
Louis Gossett, Jr.
Coolio
and just about every member of the NBA

I'll admit it, when it comes to Arabs in film - you got me stumped. The only one I can think of is Topol (from Fiddler on the Roof) who is, I believe, from Israel. The only other one I can think of is Julia Sawalha (she was on AbFab and Pride and Prejudice) who is Iranian. Pretty sad I can't think of any more.

I never really noticed any Jewish people portrayed bad. On Lizzie McGuire they had a episode were Gordan had his Barmitzvah. They showed the Jews in a really respectful way. I did not know Mindy Cohn was Jewish. I loved her on The Facts Of Life.

Sometimes Jes are all portrayed as old-fashioned people all obsessed with their memories and as very orthodox, and they're sometimes portrayed with the same accent, throwing their hands over there head 'Eeeweeh, back in de oold country'' (see the grandmothe rin the rugrats, you'll get what I mean. However- alot of the time they're portrayed fairly- I thought almost ALL italians were catholic, then found some are Jews too, I thought Roda on Mary Tyler Moore was a Catholic Italian, I'm not sure which country she was from, but she was Jewish- Jews and Italians sound the same sometimes. However- I find the Rugrats a bit TOO obsessed with Jewish people at times, other shows though you didn't know the characters a Jew for ages- I didn't know Frasiers son was a Jew in Frasier- though I cant remember- is frasier a jew?

I was disappointed with a Rugrats cartoon where they related the story of Passover--but they removed any religious part of the story!! Like people were gonna get offended at the whole thing about God...
