View Full Version : 80s was the best decade of cartoons
Pgm82 05-03-2003, 12:44 AM Hey guys, I don't know about you, but I think that the 80s and early 90s had the best cartoons of any decade. Think about it: He-Man, Ducktales, Gummi Bears, Snorks, Smurfs, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, etc. Maybe it was just because I was born in the 80s and grew up with these cartoons, but it just seems that the cartoons back then were so much cooler than the cartoons today. Today, it is all anime and they all look like the same cartoon.
trekkie 05-06-2003, 07:48 PM Oh definately! I loved Ducktales, Gummi Bears, the Wuzzles, Ninja Turtles, Alvin & the Chipmunks, etc!
I remember the first time I saw Ninja Turtles: my bro, mom & I were visiting my grandma & grandpa in Utah, and came upon the show while flipping through channels. We thought it was so wierd; a show about turtles who are ninjas! :)
Steve Carras 05-15-2003, 06:08 PM Tiny toons,Gummies, etc. made me sick.I loved the 60s,70s,50s, and earlier.Anytime I see Buster and Babs or Strawberry Shortcake or Baby Looney Tunes,..ugh,.
(I do like your Walt Disney quote..at least i;'ll give you credit for quality.
I loved the 40s Bugs Bunnys and Alvin, but from the 1960s.That was the time when the REAL Ross Bagdasarian?Dave Seville existed (died in 1972).
See ya!!!:D
TheLurkerKing 05-22-2003, 02:43 PM By Jove! I think he's got it. The decade we grew up in is the decade we prefer for cartoons. I won't say, when I was born, but, as I was around in the '60's, that's my favorite decade for cartoons. One had . . .
Beany and Cecil
Dudley Do-Rite
The Flintstones
Fractured Fairy Tales
George of the Jungle
Hoppity Hooper
The Jetsons
Jonny Quest
Journey to the Center of the Earth
The Lone Ranger (Cartoon had the best villains)
The Pink Panther and the Inspector
Super Chicken
trekkie 05-22-2003, 06:32 PM The original ALVIN is terrible! Other cartoons work in that style of animation, but not ALVIN & THE CHIPMUNKS.
JDS84 05-25-2003, 09:27 PM I have to agree with you on this. My all time favorites were The Smurfs, Alvin and The Chipmunks, Gummi Bears, Duck Tales, Ninja Turtles, and Freggle Rock. I would get early every Saturday morning just to watch these cartoons.
Evita Peron 05-26-2003, 10:58 AM I agree that the 80s/90s was the best time for cartoons. We had the Smurfs, TMNT, He-Man, She-Ra, Jem!, Flintstones Kids, A Pup Named Scooby Doo, Strawberry Shortcake, Gummi Bears, Snorks, Captain 'N The Game Master, Super Mario World, Pirates Of Dark Water, Alvin And The Chipmunks, Saban's Adventures Of The Little Mermaid and Rainbow Brite.
The only cartoons that I like from today are He-Man 2002 From Cartoon Network, What's New Scooby Doo? and the Powerpuff Girls. The rest of the cartoons all look a like to me. They suck, except for the ones that I mentioned.
They have no moral values, except for the ones that I mentioned. The cartoons from the 60s/70s/80s/90s all had moral values for the children but the cartoons of today do NOT have any moral values.
Crystal :ducky:
Evita Peron 05-26-2003, 11:01 AM The 60s/70s were also a good time for cartoons. There was The Jetsons, The Flintstones, Jonny Quest, Scooby Doo, Josie And The Pussycats, Speed Racer and Speed Buggy.
Crystal :ducky:
Zoneboy 07-13-2003, 08:43 AM I have to go with 60's/70's on this one. We had Bullwinkle, Yogi Bear, Deputy Dawg, Flintstones, Jetsons, Fat Albert, Groovy Ghoulies, Josie & The Pussycats, Star Trek, Speed Racer, Jonny Quest, The Archies, Superfriends, The Amazing Spiderman, Wacky Races, Dastardly & Muttley, The Perils Of Penelope Pitstop, Scooby-Doo Where Are You?, Go Go Gophers, Speed Buggy, The Funky Phantom, Quickdraw McGraw, Snagglepuss & so many more. I turned 16 in 1980 and cartoons just didn't appeal to me after that. I never could watch Smurfs, Carebears, Snorks, Gummi Bears, Strawberry Shortcake, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, He-Man or any other animated series after 1980. That was when my passion for music videos began and was further influenced by the debut of Mtv back in 1981.
jaap russel 07-28-2003, 06:39 PM i'm looking for a name of a cartoon which i saw when i was a kid about the same time as the first he-man series. I think it was broadcast , im my country(holland), by superchannel. It is about a guy who fights a lord (bad guy) and they both have one half of a magical sword. The hero lived with some kind of dwarfs in a huge tree in a fantasy world. If someone could help me please.
j-pak 08-11-2003, 10:48 PM ive been recently reunited with my favorite 80's cartoons of all time!!! DAVID THE GNOME! i was only like 3, but i remember it well! and, CAPTAIN PLANET! now that i think about it, captian planet was nothing but a bunch of tree huggin hippies, but i loved it back then!
and i dunno if it was the late 80's, or early 90's, but did anyone hav the MISFORTUNE of seeing that Zelda series? that sucked! ganon...well, he wasnt the ganon ive come to kno and love to destroy! and zelda was an idiot! the fairy was too! and link was not the mute we all kno from the games! he was really getting on my nerves! and his sword! i mean, it wasnt even a sword! it was a dagger with beams!!! it disgusted me...i had to play the Orical od ages jus to get riida all my anger!;)
ClassicComedyFan2 08-12-2003, 02:52 PM I know the 90s was a good time for toons: "Sonic the Hedgehog," "Batman: TAS," "Pokemon," "Super Mario World," "Animanaics," "The Tick," "The Simpsons," "Men in Black," "Superman," "Pinky and the Brain" and more!
Also, now's not so bad. You have, "Pokemon," "The Simpsons," "Tokyo Pig," "Totally Spies," "Futurama," "Digimon," "Beyblade," "Jackie Chan Adventures," "Yu-Gi-Oh," "Hamtaro," "Dexter's Lab," "Johnny Bravo," and even more.
barwars 08-13-2003, 07:18 PM Definately the 80s were the best.
The Jetsons however, were better in the 60s.
60s- early 90s were the best time to have free Saturday mornings.
I agree that newer shows are all too much Anime. Cartoons were made to be FUNNY.

Someone else mentioned this fact earlier, and this thread has pretty much borne it out: The decade you are born in is the one you consider the best for cartoons. I grew up on 60's and 70's cartoons, and I just can't see the 80's even coming close to all the classics that were mentioned above, plus the following ones:
Underdog
Space Ghost
The Herculoids
Shazzan
The Harlem Globetrotters
Abbott & Costello
Fantastic Four
Banana Splits (w/ 3 Musketeers, Arabian Knights, etc)
Dino Boy
Frankenstein Jr.
Amazing Chan & the Chan Clan
Godzilla
Woody Woodpecker
etc, etc, etc.
No comparison, IMHO. The 60's/70's wins hands down.
B&W "thank God for Boomerang - without it I'd be in serious trouble because I think Cartoon Network, WB Kids, Fox Kids, Nick, and all the others show garbage!" fan
I am Him 09-20-2003, 03:02 PM I can't believe no one mentioned Transformers and Voltron from the 80s.
There was also Inhumanoids and Robotics, and who can forget Kid Video, Thundar the barbarian, Dungeons and Dragons, Mask and Gobots(The poor mans Transformers).
I also remember a cartoon called Kissy Fur and one called Mighty Orbots.
3scompany1 09-24-2003, 12:44 PM I agree that the 80's had the best cartoons. As for anime, in my humble opinion they are crap.
jayman75 09-25-2003, 12:55 PM Jem
Voltron
Super Friends
Captain Caveman
EARLY Simpsons on EARLY Fox
Transformers
GI Joe
Heathcliff
Countless others...
Steve Carras 09-26-2003, 12:08 AM Persoanlly I thought the 80s cartoons (Tiny Toons, Animanics, Jem, My little pony, etc.) were preachy and sucked.
Exceptions: Kwicky Koala and Trollkins.
dhscsa 10-06-2003, 04:54 PM The 80's were great!
Voltron
Transformers
Thundercats
Alvin and The Chipmunks
TMNT
Captain Caveman
Inspector Gadget
Smurfs
He-Man
GI Joe
Heathcliff
Garfield and Friends
Captain Planet
Ducktales
Muppet Babies
Plus on top of it they showed reruns of the 60's and 70's cartoons on most of the cable channels of the era.
Scooby Doo
Flintstones
Jetsons
Woody Woodpecker
Rocky and Bullwinkle
Yogi Bear
Speed Racer
The 80's was the only decade that you could watch all of these classic cartoons during.

I wouldn't mind the anime so much if they were showing the COOL anime (i.e. Speed Racer, Tranzor Z, Star Blazers, etc.), but, like the rest of you I find the current kiddie-ized stuff aggravating ("Ultimate Muscle", anyone?), to say the least!
Me, I'm kinda partial to the toons from the mid-to-late 60s, including those already mentioned by other posters, but I have a lot of favorites from the 70s(Fat Albert; Tarzan; Space Sentinels), 80s(Thundarr The Barbarian; Thundercats; Trollkins{don't ask}; He-Man and The Masters of the Universe), and 90s(waaaaaay too many to list here!), and there are a few modern cartoons that strike my fancy, as well.
When you're a total-toon-atic like myself, you'll like anything that's drawn, pixelated, or flipped!
munn2334 10-22-2003, 09:51 PM I hate The Wuzzles, But I love Rambo: The Force of Freedom.
Mikado 07-10-2005, 04:28 AM the 80s had GOOD cartoons? youre insane !!! @_@
ClassicTV4Ever 07-10-2005, 10:33 AM the 80s had GOOD cartoons? youre insane !!! @_@
Nuh-uh! I think 80's cartoons were the best. A whole lot better than the crap that's on today, IMO.
GARFIELDKOOL 07-16-2005, 12:10 AM Smurfs, He Man, Thundercats, Snorks, Shirtales, Hulk Hogan's Rock n' Wrestling, Pac-Man, Flintstone Kids, Teen Wolf.
TVQuack 08-02-2005, 12:35 AM No one can touch the 80's for cartoons. That's why I live through the 80's again by buying the shows for nostalgia and so my kids can see them some day and know what it was like to grow up during an awesome decade.
G.I. Joe
Transformers
Thundercats
He-Man
Heathcliff & the Catillac Cats
The Smurfs
Alvin and the Chipmunks
The Snorks
Thundercats
M.A.S.K.
Kidd Video
The Real Ghostbusters
Garfield
Need I go on?
