What was it? I'm asking this because the CN website lists him as Sam, a few minutes ago I read in another post it said Nate and Tim's TV Showcase says its George. Does anyone know what it really was?

Was his name ever said on the show? I think he was always just known as Mr. Slate..

I seriously doubt that his first name was Nate...(Nate Slate?...I think we would have remembered that one)...

George sounds right to me...

One way to find out...next time the episode is on in which Barney finds out he's Mr. Slate's nephew, see what Barney calls him...does he call him Uncle George? I don't remember...

Also in that episode, I think Barney addresses Mr. Slate by his initials (you know how they show that on TV and in the movies sometimes...someone will address the boss as "R.J.", or "C.B" or something like that...in one scene in that episode, I seem to recall that Mr. Slate was going to fire Fred, but Barney talks him out of it...and in so doing, addresses Mr. Slate by his initials...

Anyway, as I said, I think George Slate sounds right to me somehow...I'm sure it wasn't Nate...

Nate Slate was a character on "The Flintstone Kids" who always offered his services to Freddie and Barney...for an exhorberant price!! Now, whether or not he was supposed to be Fred's future boss is somewhat doubtful, as this character was depicted as being YOUNGER than the rest of the kids on the show, and I always envisioned Mr. Slate on the original show to be OLDER that Fred and Barney.

Additionally, in the coffee-table book "The Flintstones: A Modern Stone-Age Phenomenom"(T.R. Adams, Turner Books, 1996) the writers claim that Mr. Slate was never officially given a first name...but, as far as WE'RE concerned, "George" sounds about right!!;)

In the Saturday morning cartoon series on NBC in the late 70's Mr. Slate's firs name was "Sylvester".

Actually, Mr. Slate never really had a permanent first name. That's one of those inconsistencies. It seems to change in every episode. I remember he's been called Seymour, Howard, etc. I do remember him being called "Nate Slate" in "The Jetsons Meet the Flinstones." But I remember him being called George in later movies. I think for the sake of argument. I'm going to go with 'George Nate Slate.'

Mr. Slate's first name was "Nate" in the movie "The Jetson's meet the Flintstones."

His first name was Sam in a couple of the original episodes. He was also called Mr. Rockhead in the earlier episodes.

How come there was 2 different Mr. Slates? The first one was short with black hair, not not Mr. Spacley from the Jetsons.

In one episode, Mr. Slate's wife called him "Howard." Go figure.

Yeah. I remember that one. In that same episode there was another inconsistency. Someone remembered Wilma as Wilma Pebble rather than Wilma Slaghoople.

And remember, his last name was different once - in the episode about the masquerade party where Fred and Barney dressed as a dinosaur, he was Mr. Rockhead.

Fred also referred to him as "Shorty," ":Birdbrain," a penny-pincher, the vice president of the Bedrock Knucklehead Club, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

And the boss's wife's name in that episode was Martha. :)

I think Mr. Slate's first name is Nate because he was referred to as Nate Slate in Flintstone Kids.:)

In "Fred's Island" Mrs. Slate calls her husband "Oscar."

In the second season episode " The Entertainer" where Fred woos a female client, Greta Gravel, for Mr. Slate while Wilma is out of town, but Wilma returns early and ends up at the same club as Fred and Greta--who turns out to be Wilma's old friend, Mr. Slate is called Howard by his wife, and later on, HB by Fred. Apparently HB is used often in the series as a sort of tribute to Hanna and Barbera. Also, Greta addresses Wilma as "Wilma Pebbles". As Slaghoople is accepted as her maiden name, maybe Fred isn't Wilma's first husband.

Sometimes, character designs change...though, usually not that radically
