What town did the Cleaver's live in? Where is Mayfield?

Mayfield was never supposed to be anywhere specific according to Jerry Mathers in his book. Some of the time it seemed like it was in the midwest, and I know a lot of people think it was in Ohio. Isn't there a Mayfield Heights?

Anyway, he said some of the time an episode might make mention of being near the beach, and it seemed like the show was in CA. It never seemed to be very cold out or winter there, so I have always thought CA when I watch it.

I think it is in California because it never gets very cold there and just the other day I was watching an episode where Beaver and a friend were going to go the beach and try out her brother's new surfboard! Can't really do that much anywhere in the Midwest!

Now, from what I understand, the Leave it to Beaver house was located at Universal Studio's (across the street from the Munsters house) so by all accounts the interior shots were filmed on Universal's lot in California.

However, there are quite a few exterior location shots. ("Captain Jack"...the aligator farm) and references indirectly to being near water so maybe the cast/crew did filming for those episodes "on location"

I heard that during one epiosde where the series goes "out of the house" that the producers "covered up the name of a city" which otherwise would have been seen had they not done this. Many references are made indirectly to Ohio.....(Ward from Shaker Heights, which is a suberb of Cleavland, Larry Mondello's father away on business in Cincinnati) so I really think that Mayfield the town IS in Ohio. with the episodes being near water shot on location. I can't find any other explanation for the outside scenery changes....Just a theory of course!

I just watched an episode in which June tells the Beaver that Uncle Billy(or was it aunt Martha?) was going to travel by airplane all the way from California. So there goes my, and others, California theory!

The show tried to make it seem that it was set in the Midwest, but they made some major errors.

Sometimes when they're driving down the street, you can see mountains and palm trees.

They also mentioned "going to the beach" a few times. (And remember when Wally got the job on the beach ... not as a lifeguard, but selling ice cream?)

And, as has been pointed out, it never seemed to be winter there.

Let's face it, I love it dearly, but everything about LITB is out of Fantasy Land, including its "midwest by the ocean with palm trees" setting.
