View Full Version : Why can't straight guys like soaps?
TVJunkie101 04-25-2003, 04:47 PM An odd question, I guess, but I'm straight, and I get such a kick out of primetime soaps, and a few older daytime soaps. But whenever I say I watch them, most people (esp. women, and a lot of men) either agree, or say, well, aren't you gay then?
It's LOL, really, but how many guys on here are straight and watch Dynasty, Dallas, Knots Landing, Ryan's Hope, etc.? It's just annoying I guess, because if you watch soaps that makes you gay (not really, just a statement, lol).
I Dream of Jeannie 04-25-2003, 05:00 PM I know a lot of STRAIGHT guys that watch soaps. BUT it is true that a lot of times when guys say they like watching soaps other guys or even sometimes girls say they are gay. I think that's a little stupid. I mean there are a lot of guys that grow up with mothers and sisters that watch them and over time the show grows on them and therefore they end up becoming a fan. I don't think it's right to classify any guy who watches soaps as gay.

I know; I wasn't classifying them as any guy who watches soaps are gay. Did I imply that? LOL.
Anyway, I got hooked on Days of our Lives years ago by an Aunt, but have gotten out of watching really any daytime soaps. My mom and grandma both watch the ABC soaps. So yeah, I grew up with them, but have since grown out of them.
I did like Passions up until about 2002 when that got even more redudant and stupid.

I am straight and I watch soaps. Especially Dark Shadows, I love supernatural stuff. I use to watch Passions, it was cool in the beginning, but now it sucks.
TVJunkie you seemed to have good taste in shows, to like Melrose Place that is pretty good taste, why did you ever watch Passions? That soap is starting to give other soaps bad names lol I hate it too because Passions was the best in the beginning. It was funny, exciting, and had supernatural storylines, it was the best. Now it is stupid :(
I Dream of Jeannie 04-25-2003, 06:27 PM I think that the Monkey on Passions is a bit OVER THE TOP!!!!! I mean come on, it's supposed to have or be having ROMANTIC fantasies about Luis! HOW STUPID!! Oh well, I guess that's good for a laugh.

I Dream of Jeannie 04-25-2003, 06:46 PM  Mabye that is worth watching, and I don't blame that monkey, Luis is mighty FINE!!!
Sean Snow 04-25-2003, 07:36 PM I watch some of the older soaps and I'm straight werm. I think it's stupid when people say that guys can't watch soaps without being gay. And then people don't respect soap actors because of the shows they work on.
I don't watch the current soaps because they don't interest me. But I like Dark Shadows and Ryan's Hope, along with primetime Dynasty. I think those shows are a lot of fun to watch because they're so interesting. werm.

Werm :p I agree about Dark Shadows. It is fun, exciting, and interesting to watch. It is basically the only soap I watch every day.
garrettgam 04-26-2003, 12:12 AM I think that straight guys watching soaps isn't stupid. I believe it is perfectly fine. Guys don't always have to watch macho stuff. Soaps can really bring out the sensitive part in guys, which is good for you ladies. I used to watch Y&R, B&B, Sunset Beach and I watch Passions and DOOL. I think there is nothing wrong with it. I think that even the guys that SAY they don't watch soaps, secretly enjoy them. They are very good, well when they are written right. What's wrong with learning about people's relationships and seeing great shockers? Nothing at all.

I hope more people watch soaps so that the ratings will be better.
Brandon 04-27-2003, 07:28 AM grr. that makes me mad! the first soap i ever really started watching everyday was Days, and it was all because of a girl that i thought was hot. (then i got interested in the show). people...so narrow minded.
factsoflife 05-23-2003, 03:39 PM Well its a societal thing that makes it "un-cool" for str8 guys to watch soaps, but it don't matter cause i know a lot of str8 guys that watch soaps.... Just ignore those people or try to educate them as to why u like soaps...
I can't tell you how many times I get asked that question, because of my interest in soaps. I grew up with parents, mother and father, who would watch "Dallas" reruns with me, and grandparents who watched "The Young and the Restless" and "Guiding Light." It wasn't until June 3, 2001, that I really started watching a soap everyday -- that was the day I saw "All My Children" for the first time. I thought it was pretty good, and I watched it everyday, and I still do to this day. I started watching "Dark Shadows" in summer 2002, and I have loved it since. I've seen clips of lots of soaps and I really would like to have SoapNet so I can watch full episodes, but if I were to call the cable company, they would simply ask me "Are you gay?" Oh, the world and its evil ways.....
See the reason why people think soaps are for women is because in the 1930s and 1940s, housewives would tune into the radio soaps while they did their household chores. Then they did the same with TV soaps in the 1950s and 1960s. Then by the 70s, soaps became basically a part of life, and everyone would watch them, but there are still some people who believe that soaps are for women, and not men.
factsoflife 05-23-2003, 09:17 PM How do u watch Dark Shawdows? What network is it on? because that show was canceled in like 1975. I've never seen it and i'm 21!
garrettgam 05-23-2003, 09:21 PM Dark Shadows airs in reruns on SCI-FI every weekday morning.

I believe there are 2 back-to-back episodes. DVD Box sets are available too if you want a mass of them at the same time.

I know we had our differences in the past, but believe me and every other member, well most of them here, Dark Shadows is a great soap. I love it. It is like Port Charles. That is what made me watch PC because I heard it had a vampire in it. Dark Shadows airs on Sci-Fi at 8 AM Monday through Friday for 1 hour. You'll like it I'm sure if you still watch Port Charles. :)

Like the others have mentioned, it's on Sci Fi at 8:00am & 8:30am. It's been on Sci Fi from 1992-1997 and 1999 to now, and is on DVD. The ones on DVD so farare better than the ones that are on right now, imo. The current plot is more sci fi than the other ones are; it involves these ancient race of beings who were the main force on Earth before the arrival of humans who want to become rulers of Earth again. For some reason, they start in Collinsport. Why? No one knows. ^_^
Just a quick note: DS ran until April 2nd, 1971. After that, ABC replaced it with a revival of Password. And the ratings for DS had finally started to rise in it's last full month on the air. *sigh*
Anyways, to answer the topic. I think it's stupid for people to think that just because a guy watchs a soap opera it means he's gay. And everyone always goes on and on about how soaps have bad acting. Yeah, there are some duds, but there are also really great actors and actresses who do a great job portraying their characters. And soaps have some great writing; I really like Claire Labine's writing on soaps, since her plots are character-driven.
I started watching soaps on February 4th, 2002. That's the day I first watched Dark Shadows. It was in the late 1967 episodes and a major murder had taken place in the first episode I saw. I was hooked from that moment on. I never watched any other soaps because I don't like today's soaps that much.
I got SoapNet this February and the first soap I watched on it was Ryan's Hope, and I was hooked. The writing is great, and now that they've started from the beginning I like it even more. All the character's actions make perfect sense; they rarely do anything out of character. I also watch Dynasty on SoapNet; I love its plots and it has some great actors and actresses like Pamela Sue Martin. And when SoapNet adds Another World, I'll definately be tuning in!
Lisa_Marie_Presley_Fan 05-27-2003, 12:35 AM I'm not gay and I watch "One Life To Live."

Heidi 05-30-2003, 03:56 PM Stereotypes are so stupid! I've known a lot of guys who watch soaps. My brother started me watching them. I'd think female soap watchers would love to find a guy who watches the same things they do.
passionsfan79 06-01-2003, 05:15 AM im straight and im a big passions fan even though some of it is getting kinda boring
garrettgam 06-01-2003, 12:52 PM Great point Heidi about how most girls would love to have a male soap watcher to talk about it with. We all know that when we watch soaps we always talk to the screen and complain out loud about stuff...it would be nice to have someone there to talk about it with. Why not a boyfriend? hehe. Unfortunately none of my "girl" friends watch soaps so I am stuck alone watching DOOL and Passions by myself, while screaming at the screen. Oh well, see all of you who are the same in the looney bin!

Tyler77 06-13-2003, 02:57 PM Did you know that at the height of it's popularity, "The Edge of Night" had a audience that was comprised mostly of men? It was estimated that the show's viewership was 65% men and 35% women?........Oh well, my sister likes watching NFL games on Sundays during the fall....does that make her gay?
i am 37. i have watched DAYS since i was 2. i grew up with young and the restless, the doctors, and edge of night as well.
i am straighter than bill clinton in a w____house.
also grew up with dallas, knots landing, and from here to eternity.
HuntingtonM15 06-24-2003, 01:05 AM I'm not gay and I'm a big Y&R fan.
