Both sitcoms and dramas (covering my butt from the start here!)


I have an 8 year old daughter who has spent a lot of time watching with me some of the older TV shows I have acquired recently. She loves Sister Bertrill (The Flying Nun) and Gidget and laughs just like a grown up at Laverne and Shirley (the physical comedy stuff). She watches The Facts of Life, Diff'rent Strokes and Gimme A Break with me. She's asked me to make her tapes of these shows to put in her room so she can watch them when she wants. I grew up with these shows so of course I know the value of them, the comedy of them and how great they are. My daughter is growing up with cartoons that aren't really cartoons and shows that are violent, talk about sex, etc. I'm so thrilled that these older shows are available for her to watch and enjoy. :)

It's how new "Oldie" fans are made :)

Does anyone else here have children who watch "your" shows?

I don't have any kids, but I got into classic tv the same way. You remember when TBS used to show all the old stuff like Andy Griffith Show (I really hated this show at first because he watched it so much.), Sanford and Son, etc? My dad was a really big fan of the shows and I'd be in there watching them with him. When I got a bit older, eh, lets say 13 years old, I started my recording craze. I'd record anything that I grew up watching.

What's your daughters name, btw?

There are some decent older shows but I prefer newer shows.There's just something about the humor of today's shows (well most of them.Not the preachy family ones) that I like.

I got into old sitcoms and such by myself. I always ask my parents what a classic show is like before I watch it, but for the most part, we don't watch them together.

I think the older shows are probably better. And most of my life, I enjoyed watching the old Nick @ Nite, and TBS. However, now, I've moved into watching shows from the 90's. I still hate most everything that's current. With the exception of "Andy Richter", "Futurama", and "King of the Hill", everything in the current schedule sucks (In my opinion).

I grew up with the classics airing Nick @ Nite, TBS, etc. So, I've become adapt to them. I really do enjoy a load of shows that are on the air today, but know they'll be around forever (Friends, Seinfeld, etc. I'm not into a lot, but can watch, and maybe 5, 10 years from now will get into them more). I like all shows, really. Some I can't stand (Andy Richter, MASH), but overall, I can watch any sitcom and laugh, and I like a lot of the dramas too.

The sitcoms of "yester-year" are far more innocent than today, but we're in a very different place now, so things change. If a show even remotely like, say Donna Reed popped up, it would be just a parody, and it would be considered cheesy today. Back then it would be called wholseome, fun, etc. Sure, a lot of the 50s, early 60s shows were in black and white, and not LOL funny.. but eh, I'm rambling... lol.

I basically can watch any show, from any generation and enjoy it.

when i have kids, i'll definately sit them down and have them watch Laverne & Shirley, Three's Company, and other great old shows. the good thing about the older shows is that they make you laugh WITHOUT sexual remarks. i love the oldies but goodies.

Exactly. The sex jokes and foul language is funny, but you can only go so far with it.

You're right. The sex jokes are funny. We just need more variety. It's like every show that comes out anymore is jampacked with sex jokes. Even the "family comedies" is filled with foul language.

Yeah. I'm not saying we should censorize everything, it's just it's all over the place, lol. Reba is a good show that doesn't rely on sex jokes and foul language to get a laugh. I liked Friends more in it's first few years before all the sex jokes took over.

I find Will and Grace hilarious. Family Guy too. So a lot of shows, when doing it the right way, can make those things funny, but not overbearing.

I Dont have any kids but my little Sister Mckenzie (2 Years Old) Watches TV Land with me in the afternoon. She likes Happy Days like me but her favorite is The Brady Bunch. I Think thats pretty cool :lol:

I Started liking old shows when i was really young. We got Cable when i was 4 and I Loved Nickelodeon, And since i was never one to sleep early (Even In Kindergarden I Didnt go to sleep til like 10, Midnight on Weekends :lol: ) So i watched Nick At Nite too. Since than I Have loved Classic TV Shows.

I don't have kids either but Old shows are great...well not too old. I don't watch anything before the 70's...But one of my Favorite shows when I was a kid was Three's Company.

Yeah I agree about the sex jokes too...I don't see why they use them all the time on shows now? Like "My Wife and Kids" is a family show and its FULL of sex jokes.

I agree. I don't mind the occasional sex joke, but shows shouldn't rely solely on sexual innuendo and potty humor. Come up with stuff that's origional and funny.

I like a lot of the older shows the best. You can name any sitcom of the 50s, 60s, and parts of the 70s---even the really awful ones---and I'll bet you they'd still be better than 90% of what you see today. I got interested in Classic TV when CKVR-TV Channel 3 in Barrie began running older shows from the late 1980s to the early 1990s. At that time, they were the only ones showing these great series since there were no specialty channels around. I was hooked on them the minute I saw them and I refused to watch any other channel, unless there was a hockey game on. Some of the stuff I remember from their lineup included:

"I Love Lucy", "Andy Griffith", "Leave It To Beaver", "The Beverly Hillbillies", "Green Acres", "The Munsters", "Car 54, Where Are You?", "Gilligan's Island".

You can have your TV Land or whatever, but you'll never find a better group of shows anywhere. It's an awful pity that they've stopped!

I did the same thing. My dad watched reruns of Dragnet, Adam-12, WKRP, etc. I watched them and got hooked. My main classic TV craze was started when I saw I Love Lucy. That led to more classic TV. Now it's all I watch pretty much.

My craze got started with I Love Lucy too. I've always favored it, and honestly, have yet to get sick of seeing it. I stopped watching for around a year or 2 before it came to TV Land, and when it did, I only watched the marathon and an occasional ep, so it's only been very recent that I've watched the show on a more regular basis.

I tend to watch more classics, seeing as you never know how long they'll be around, but I enjoy a few "modern" things too.

Well I started going back to shows that I either remember it being on when I was young (soap, jeffersons, happy days) or remember being reminiced about (gomer pyle usmc, etc).

I got into Get Smart because I remember watching & taping 1989's "Get Smart, Again" & enjoying it imensley. I also remember watching both the I Dream of Jeannie repeats & reunion movies & enjoyed those as well.

I watch the older shows for they are clean shows. The newshows maybe in ten years when they are declared old and the black and whites are gone,I tune into them I am always a little behind in current tv. Kate and Allie was on in 1984 and it wasn't till it was in syndication that I got around to see it. I thought the show was good. At the time I was into the night time soaps.
