View Full Version : Website Layouts
MandieR1980 04-24-2003, 10:47 PM I would like to start a website to go along with my weight loss surgery journey and I have no clue how to start one except on AOL and their webpages are pretty lame, I'd like a professional looking one but I have no idea how to do that. Any suggestions?
Fran Fan 04-24-2003, 10:52 PM Two very good free web hosts are http://www.geocities.com and http://www.tripod.com
Both of them allow you to either use your own HTML or they have Templates to let you build upon.
Geocities is probably a little better of the two because it's a bit faster and easier to get around and they don't have as many pop-ups as Tripod does.
If you need help or pointers regarding HTML site building, I would be happy to help you.
MandieR1980 04-24-2003, 10:53 PM thanks
pandora_spocks 04-24-2003, 11:03 PM Actually, I wouldn't recommended those hosts unless you have a code to kill their pop-up ads. Need one let me know I can get ya one.
You can also find a list of good HTML sites with tutorials and such on my site.

Well, I don't know of any free sites that don't put some kind of ad on your page. I think Tripod has an option where you can choose to have a banner at the top of every page instead of the annoying pop-ups.
And if there are free web hosts that give you webspace without the ads, there's a catch of one kind or another...
pandora_spocks 04-24-2003, 11:10 PM Oh yeah, if anyone wants me to make them a pre-made layout and have an idea in mind with photos and such and are willing to pay, I will make you a layout. :D

That's why I dislike free hosts and most of them don't let you use FTP - like 50megs.com, they used to let you use FTP to upload your files, but not anymore. And geocities - they were good until they got together with yahoo..they've just gone to hell since. There are codes aka scripts that you add to your HTML and it will kill the pop-up add that the free hosts jam into your HTML after you publish your page. I am anti-pop-up unless your layout is a pop-up. Anyway, like I said if anyone has a free host and would like a code to remove those stupid pop-up ads like on geocities let me know and I'll get you one.

I use the webspace from the ISP -- it's excellent, but it should be; we pay them over $50 a month.. There are no pop ups, ftp, even cgi. I have a lot of space too, I have about 50 hi res photos on my space, and have only used about half of it. So, check to see if your ISP gives out webspace..

That's not bad, but here's what I have from my current host at featureprice.com. I really like featureprice until they suspended my account and I'm assuming that was because this past January my account needed to be renewed and no I haven't so why are my subdomains still running? I don't know and frankly I don't care. :p They have most of all the features I could possibly ever want never had a problem with going over my limit of space although I do use quite a lot and no bandwidth charges whatsoever. Plus, they allow Mp3s and .Wmv's which were essential when they were hosting my Mary Tyler Moore (which is on a long hiatus right now). And YES! I do use more than half of the stuff listed especially PHP and MySQL.
Warning! Long list ahead!

The Details:
(1) Armada of Features
For reviewing the full list of features that are included with the Premium Package, please review the Application Functionality page. All features listed on this page are included in the Platinum Package.
(2) Physical Quality Hosting - www.yourname.com
We do not provide cheap "virtual hosting" or "virtual server" solutions as many of our competitors do. Here you get FULL PHYSICAL HOSTING. What does this mean? This means that with this physical hosting account you will be able to host your very own domain name: www.yourname.com
Explore the benefits of physical hosting! Your website will be reachable via both http://www.yourname.com as well as http://yourname.com. You will not have to carry our name in your website's address - your website address will ONLY show www.yourname.com. In addition to that you will get your very own FTP server at ftp.yourname.com and your very own mailserver for email services at mail.yourname.com (includes SMTP services).
(3) Web Based Management Interface
This browser-based control facility allows you to control every aspect of your Feature Price account. From creating and modifying email mailboxes, password protecting directories over to creating FTP accounts - you can manage everything that could be managed. Best of all, it is a *totally automated* solution. Don't wait for our response for a request - simply use your control panel and do-it-yourself, INSTANTLY. Click Here to learn more about our control panel!
(4) 5,000 Megabytes of Web Space (5 gigabytes)
Do not fool around with web hosting providers with stingy plans - 25, 10 or even 5 megabytes - that's ridiculous. We provide you with a full 5,000 megabytes of web space (5 gigabytes) with no restrictions and no requirements (note: adult content is strictly prohibited). You are allowed to use ALL 5,000 megabytes of web space, may it be for a professional picture archive, a photo gallery, a MP3 website - it does not matter
(5) One (1) free Domain Registration
You are allowed to register 1 domain name for no additional charge with the Platinum Package. You read correctly: There is no setup fee, no annual fee, no InterNIC, no nothing fee except the monthly subscription rate for the package. Once you have established your hosting account we will immediately register the free domain name for you. You can also order the package with your existing domain name and make use of the free domain registration later - anytime while you host with us.
(6) Host up to 4 Domain Names
You are allowed to host up to 4 domain names for no additional charge with the Platinum Package. These domain names will have full email services and their own control interface. They will be hosted totally independent of each other. Although the domains are all being hosted in the same hosting account, they are physically totally seperate of each other and therefore they can have distinct, totally different content.
(7) Host up to 5 Subdomains
You are allowed to What is a subdomain? While a domain name is a full website address, totally independent of other domain names, a subdomain depends on a domain name. If for example "yourname.com" is your domain name, then a subdomain name would be a name under your domain name, something like http://somethinghere.yourname.com. You are allowed to host up to 5 subdomains for no additional charge with the Platinum Package. These domain names will have full email services and their own control interface. Just like the additional domains they can also have their own, distinct content.
(8) / PostgreSQL Capability
If you need a database for your website, our mySQL / PostgreSQL database backend is the right solution for you. We run mySQL server 3.23.32 on our machines - one of the latest stable releases. You will be able to administrate your mySQL database with a browser based program, written in PHP.
(9) SSL protected website
If you want to process electronic transactions with your website this is a mandatory feature. If one of your clients fill out an online order form, this feature encrypts the information and safely sends it to your email address. It is not possible for hackers to intercept that data and even if they did - no benefit, as it is encrypted. Please note that a SSL certificate is *not* included, however the SSL address will also work without an certificate.
(10) Static *and* Dedicated IP address
You will get your own static and dedicated IP address. IP addresses are going quick on the Internet today, grab yours quickly, before it is too late! With a full physical hosting account on a static *and dedicated IP, you will always be able to reach your website's files, regardless if your domain name is responding or not. Therefore it is an extremely valuable resource for fixing problems that may arise with your domain name. In addition to that you will be able to test your website thoroughly before you decide to transfer your domain name to your website.
(11) Full unlimited Email Services
The Premium Package includes a full range of email services without any limitations. You can create unlimited POP3 email boxes, webmail accounts, email redirects and forwarders (similar to email aliases), auto responders, mailing groups (similar to mailling lists). Once you have established your hosting account simply login to your control panel to start using your email services.
(12) Full unlimited FTP Services
The Premium Package includes a full range of FTP services without any limitations. You can create unlimited FTP user accounts in your control panel. The FTP user's address will then look like this: www.yourname.com/~ftpuser. That way you could offer small hosting services to mini website owners who do not need their own domain name. Once you have established your hosting account simply login to your control panel to start creating FTP users.
(13) No forced Advertisements
Feature Price will never - ever - put advertisements on your website. Unlike many free hosting companies or nickel-and-dimer deals, Feature Price does NOT include advertisements and therefore your website will stay totally advertisement free. You can still put your own advertisements on your pages to earn revenue off of your website's traffic if you want, but Feature Price will not deface your website by forced advertisements.
Fran Fan 04-25-2003, 02:13 AM Actually, most of the free webhosts have cheap hosting and domain name options. That's how I got my site. I pay the $8.95 a month and get the domain name, the extra space, the CGI bin and PERL stuff (which I know little about right now), domain e-mail, no ads or pop-ups (thank heavens, they were annoying!), etc. ad nauseum. I also get 5 sub-domains, 5 pop-mail domain accounts and 5 domain e-mail forwarding accounts, 50 MBs webspace, 10 GB bandwidth, able to upload WVMs and MP3s (why wouldn't they?), blah blah blah yaddah, yoda and yogurt.
Yousa gets the points.
However, I admit the one Pandora mentions for $16.95 sounds like one hell of a deal! 5,000 MB (5 GB) webspace! Holy storage Batman, my harddrive itself only has a little over 5 GBs of stuff on it. I admit that's a damn good deal. I might have to look into it someday. Right now though, I'm familiar enough with the File Manager and all that so I wouldn't want to have to familiarize myself right now with another one.
One place I warn against is http://www.designmatrix.biz which is where a friend of mine has his site at. He pays a whopping $40 a month for what I consider a slow and clunky manager interface.
They don't even give you an option to just write HTML in a blank page and you have to go with templates not to mention they have no PREVIEW page to see how the page looks before you save it, blah blah blah --- I can complain about them all day.

I wouldn't though like I said they suspended me and I've tried to contact them numerous times, but they won't reply back. So I'm gonna move on to a new host called Netrillium (http://www.netrillium.net) that my friend Bonnie suggested. I'm not sure if they host all sorts of sites other than personal ones, but you'll have to find that out yourself.

ew Freewebs lol. I have my TC site there and they were fine until January 2003 for me. It says it offers up to 100mbs free but it won't let me upload more than 50 files. When they first started doing the 50 file thing, I had like 250 files on there already but thankfully it didn't delete them. *shrug* Right now I use Geocities on my other site even though I'm not happy with any of the free hosts. One day I hope to get a domain name.

It used to do that to me when I had Compuserve. Now that I have AOL, it stopped. And since AOL started using an automatic pop up blocker, it works perfectly on my AOL 8.0.

You mean cjb.net? Sorry, don't have any for that. I suggest you download a 'Pop Up Stopper' (http://www.popupstopper.com/) so it stops the pop-ups on your computer.

The thing is, most free webhosts have the option to pay for a domain name and no ads or pop-ups. Tripod offers a very reasonable plan for $8.95 a month were you get a domain name (one time set up fee of $15.00), 5 subdomains, 5 domain e-mail forwarding, 5 pop-mail domain e-mail, no ads or pop-ups (of course), 50 MB webspace, Perl and CGI support, 10 GB monthly bandwidth, etc. ad nauseum.
I'm not trying to sound like a spokesman for Tripod. Heh.
What you should do is get a free webhost like Geocities, Tripod or some other decent one, build your site and when you feel ready to, upgrade it.
As for Freewebs, I've seen it and I agree they'll only last so long before resorting to pop-ups. If not, there's a catch like Sean mentioned. Besides, these people would be losing money. They need revenue from somewhere and exactly where are they getting it. I just don't fall for the free site thing without banners or ads unless you're actually paying for it.
So far, I've been happy with both Geocities and Tripod. Tripod has a better paid webhost deal, though, then Geocities.
Fran Fan 04-27-2003, 02:42 AM BTW, be carefull with Pop-Up killers on free sites. If they find out, they'll shut you down. I remember I accidentally removed the Javascript code for the pop-ups on one page on a Geocities account and they cancelled my account - e-mail and all!
Some of these sites have Bots which can detect these too.
