Ok, I have to know, what the heck is the deal with you shelley fans and Rebecca? In case you forgot, SHELLEY CHOSE TO LEAVE THE SHOW. We should be happy we got someone as great as Kirstie to do Rebecca. I can't stand to see a good character, and actress get flattened by obsessive fans of other people. If you don't like non-Shelley eps, just stop watching the show! If you have, great! But don't take it out on Kirstie for Diane's absence.

To put it in the words of Pearl Forrester,

"Move on Nelson, I am."

I can only speak for myself, but my dislike of the Rebecca character has nothing to do with Shelley's departure. I simply don't care for Rebecca. I think she had zero chemistry with Sam although the writers tried to create a spark.
In Kirstie Alley's defense, her character was poorly written in my opinion. She started off bossy and cold and morphed into a dingbat. I think Rebecca was whiny, neurotic and annoying.
If an actress came on the show who was terrific, I'd be the first to say it.
I watched Cheers during its original run. I didn't care for Rebecca then and I still don't. A lot of people feel this way.

Why can't you Diane fans be more like her? You people are ALMOST as cynical as MSTies.

Thank you tomservo99! Ok, I am a Shelley Long fan primarily a Diane Chambers fan, but i want to say I have nothing agaisnt rebecca in fact i like the rebecca years i just prefer diane's character and watching the first three seasons. I don't think rebecca's character was poorly written in fact the reason i like the character is because of how DIFFERENT it was from Diane's character. If they would have replaced Diane with another diane it would have in my opinion killed it. I mean come on NOBODY can do Diane Chambers like shelley long it's impossible! the chemistry between her and Sam is unreplaceble. So if the writers would have even attempted it, it would have ended up like soo many other series and it would have been the end of Cheers. Again my Favorite Characters ARE Sam and Diane, but i like rebecca. Cheers is Cheers and all in all i am a CHEERS FAN.

okay guys..im sorry this is making such a big conflict..your right...cheers is cheers..but rebecca is rebecca....and diane is diane. and in my opinion the diane eps were better because of the sam/ diane love fling. K? i have nothin against rebecca or kirstie.

My favorite part about Cheers is the Sam and Diane relationship in fact without it i don't think i would have started or kept on watching Cheers. It is the BEST chemistry ever seen on the small screen and i love it! i have never seen anything like it and i don't think i ever will!

I don't think the rebecca episodes were bad... I liked the Fraiser and Lilith thing they were funny and upredictable. I haven't watched much of the diane years. I started watching cheers during I think around season 8 or 9. So I guess it's whenever you tune into cheers and what you are introduced to is proably the years you will most enjoy. :)

Well helen Chapel, i would have to disagree. See around a year ago i knew of Cheers, because i've been watching nick at nite for almost 7 years now, and one day decided to see one episode. I can't even remember it. It was a rebecca years episode and i didn't really like it that much, because in order for me and for any one to truly appreciate Cheers, at least in my opinion, has to watch it from the first episode. Because you get to know the characters ALOT better. Then Nick @ nited during the summer was airing Cheers the Diane years every Sunday from 10 to 2 am and i started watching it from episode 1 amd that is when i got into cheers. I mean REALLY into it. and after about a year it's still the only thing i tune in to watch on t.v. like i watch tv ofcourse but i mean actually every night at the same time (unless nick at nite screws up) tune in. If u've never seen the Diane years start watching them now. I mean they basically just started this week.

I hated the episode where Woody Gets married.

OMG that two-parter is one of the best episodes of this series. I thought it was hilarious when it first aired, and I treasured the VHS videotape I recorded it on, lol.

I don't like the season 1 Christmas episode "The Spy Who Came In For A Cold One". It really has nothing to do with Christmas, just a guy that comes into the bar and starts reciting poems and they don't know if he really is who he says he is. BORING!

No dissing Kirstie here. While I do prefer the Diane era, I like the Rebecca era too.

Yes, Shelley Long did choose to leave the show and I think she made a bad decision. I wouldn't be surprised if Long later regretted it herself.

It was a different Cheers after she left, but still fun. And the Sam/Rebecca chemistry was great, though in a different way. She was more like a sister/friend to him and it gave the show six more years.

Everyone was worried when season six premiered, but the fans accepted Kirstie Alley and the show went on to even bigger success, ratings-wise.

But the Sam and Diane era will always be my favorite. ;)
