A scene from "Beach Blanket Bum"

If you will recall, Corvetteguy listed this episode in an earlier post: June and Ward become concerned about Wally after he becomes obsessed with surfing and hanging out with his surf friends. Things really get heated when Waly wants to drop out of college and surf full time.

I will add some guest cast to the episode: Kerry, Wally's fraternity brother and surfer (Paul Petersen) and The Big Kahuna, a professional surfer (Edd Byrnes).

FADE-IN:

EXT. - FRONT OF THE CLEAVER HOME, 211 PINE STREET - NIGHT

CUT TO:

INT - CLEAVER LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Ward Cleaver sits in a living room chair and reads the newspaper as June enters the room and places a tray with two cups of coffee on the coffee table. Ward looks up from the newspaper.

WARD: Oh, Hi Dear.

June picks up a cup of coffee and sits down across from Ward on the sofa.

JUNE: What's in the paper? You seem awfully engrossed in it.

WARD: Not very much, actually. I'm just trying to adjust to the quiet in this house. No rock and roll music eminating from upstairs. Where's Beaver?

JUNE: Over at the Rutherfords visiting Violet again.

WARD: Oh.

Ward puts the paper down and reaches for his cup of coffee.

JUNE: I think they are getting a little too serious, Ward. Beaver's too young to be thinking about going steady.

WARD: Well it could be worse, Dear. We could have a daughter who wants to go steady with Lumpy.

JUNE: Oh, Ward! I'm serious. I think Beaver should see other girls before he becomes too serious about just one.

Ward stares at June.

WARD: June, Beaver's seventeen years old. He's old enough to make his own decision about what girls he wants to see.

JUNE: Seems to me you felt the same way about Wally when he was seventeen. And look at the mess he's in now.

Ward puts his empty coffee cup down on the table. He lets out a sigh.

WARD: I'm not thrilled about his taking up surfing either, June. But it had nothing to do with a girl.

JUNE: The heck it didn't, Ward. Wally dropped out of school and is out in California with Sallie and Kerry and that 'Kahuna' person --and you let him go!

WARD: I let him go? June, what was I supposed to do? Lock Wally in his bedroom for the entire summer? He's twenty-one years old!

The front door opens and Beaver enters the foyer. Ward looks over at his younger son.

WARD: Have a good time at the Rutherford's Beaver?

BEAVER: Yeah, Dad. Violet and I listened to records.

JUNE: That's nice, Dear.

Beaver stares at his parents, feeling uneasy.

BEAVER: You've been arguing about Wally, haven't you?

WARD: We weren't exactly arguing, Son.

JUNE: I'm afraid we were, Ward. Wally's dropping out of school has us really upset.

Beaver nods his head.

BEAVER: Yeah. How's it going to look when Eddie and Lumpy graduate next year and Wally's nothing more than a beach bum?

Ward and June glance at each other, and Ward gets a determined look on his face.

:happyface More from "Beach Blanket Bum":

DISSOLVE TO:

CLEAVER KITCHEN - DAY

THE NEXT MORNING

The Cleavers -- Ward, June and Beaver -- eat their breakfast. Beaver stuffs his scrambled eggs into his mouth quickly.

WARD: Beaver! Where are your manners?

BEAVER: Huh? Oh, Sorry Dad. Guess I'm in a hurry to get out of here today. I'm meeting Gilbert and Richard over at Richard's house. We're going surfing today.

June comes to the table with a plate of toasted bread. She looks worried.

JUNE: Surfing? Oh, Beaver -- not you too!

BEAVER: Gee, Mom. We're just going to the beach. I'm not going to get all flaky like Wally.

JUNE: Just see that you don't.

Ward puts his fork down on the table. He looks troubled.

WARD: Speaking of Wally, I've made a decision about vacation this summer.

BEAVER: Vacation? Aren't we going to the lake like we always do?

Ward shakes his head.

WARD: No, Beaver. Your mother and I feel it wouldn't quite be as much fun without Wally.

JUNE: You feel the same way, don't you Beaver?

BEAVER: I haven't thought about it that much. But, yeah, I guess it would be kind of creepy without Wally. So where are we going, Dad?

WARD: California.

Beaver's eyes grow wide.

JUNE: We thought it would be nice to visit Wally in Venice, Beaver.

WARD: Just think of the surfing you can do out there.

June stares at Ward.

JUNE: Ward ...

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. - APARTMENT HOUSE, VENICE, CALIFORNIA - DAY

CUT TO:

INT. - APARTMENT KITCHEN

Sallie Martin reaches into the freezer for an ice pack as 'The Big Kahuna' walks into the room.

KAHUNA: What gives with the ice, Babe?

SALLIE: It's for Wally.

KAHUNA: Don't tell me my star pupil is injured! He's got a big surfing meet today!

SALLIE: Okay, I won't tell you. But Wally's shoulder is bruised.
