View Full Version : Anyone write scripts?
webuster 04-06-2003, 11:45 AM Has anyone ever wrote movie/tv scripts? I wrote a few tv scripts, just messin' round, and am writing a screenplay. It used to be I wanted to write a book (I still want to- but for now won't)- But I find it easier to write a script- even though many scripts are from novels, you don't need too much detail. almost everyday I get an idea into my head- if it's a simple idea I write down a few lines for the idea, if I get an idea, and am on a speed-thinking bursting with more to the idea- I write pages of a description- soemtimes the whole happenings of the film, so as not to forget. I've even began remembering interesting dreams, and write and draw them. When I finish the current script- I hope to write all my ideas- and someday if I get a little fame (it's easier to be an author and get fame, movie directors have less time) then I'll use my connections to get scripts made. Does anyone ever wite any scripts?
*GoodMorningCalgary* 04-06-2003, 11:51 AM I don't, But I help my friend sometimes to write movie scripts. He wants to be a Filmmaker and he has his first script done called "The Cry for Attention" and we were ready to start renting cameras and boom mikes and everything but then he decided to hold it off until he was finished High School.
webuster 04-06-2003, 12:05 PM I don't think you should hold of making a film, If I wrote a simple script, that I could make with hardly any money ( the script I've wrote now needs some big set parts, but nothing much that I couldn't somehow get- except a few scenes) I would go for it. To make a film that I could somehow get my local cinema to show, I'd promise sponsorships and product placement in the film, and credits, to get some free stuff for a set. I can't even afford to hire a camera (at least I don't think so- IT'S supposedly a buit expensive)- but I want to make at least one amateur film, before I (if I do) get into the film making that includes having 1000's in the credits 9I don't nderstand why so many are needed). Is the script any good? I'd never let anyone help with a script- unless we both started the film idea together, otherwise no, cos sometimeas conflict of interest breaks it up, and compromising could hurt the whole film. Anyways- Good Luck on it all, bye.

Thanks! Yeah Its a pretty good script. Its about a School shooting, yeah I only help him out once in awhile cause I've read it about a Million times and I just tell him what he should add or take out. But we ran into some problems and he just wants to wait until he's a little older to do the movie.
ABlairican Pie 04-06-2003, 12:18 PM YES!!!! I DEFINITELY write scripts!!!! I am completing an intermediate course with Hollywood Scriptwriting Institute, a school with correspondense courses, and currently I am waiting for my screenplay lesson to return in the mail. My instructor has graded it with his critiques...but the mail seems to be a little too slow...My lesson is basically my 120-page rough draft script which I am going to polish up in the Advanced course.
webuster 04-06-2003, 12:22 PM School Shooting- sounds interesting, I've never seen a film like that before, and am surprised Hollywood isn't doing it yet. Anyway- after all these shootings going on, it would be nice to see a film focusing on the whole subject, to give more view to it all. Good Luck- and If you ever get around to doing it, maybe you could give it one of those 'Online Releases' that seem to be all the rage with WB etc now. :D
webuster 04-06-2003, 12:37 PM Ablairica, what's your script about? Also- do you HAVE to join the writers guild to have your script protected, and does it cost anything to have it 'protected' to prevent it from being stolen? It's free to have songs copyrighted, I'm not sure about scripts, cos I wanna make sure my scripts aren't ever stolen. Good luck on your script.

My script is an action/adventure story involving a swashbuckling Indie/Arnie type guy who has to rescue people from aliens... (Don't wanna give too much away, 'cause I want everyone to sit on the edge of their seats with a popcorn tub when it comes out!:D ) Also, you can register a script with the Writers Guild of America for only $25.00 if you want it protected. So if someone
comes out with something that LOOKS like your idea too much, you can show proof you originally had the idea. But don't let fear of plagiarism keep you from writing a script!
webuster 04-06-2003, 12:58 PM This sounds interesting, an updated 'hero' and rescuer of Damsels in Distress is your film supposed to be? Is the script finished, or are you adding more to it- are there any alien scenes?

Yes, it's pretty much the swashbuckling hero/ DID kinda thing--with some interesting twists--like the alien scenes....The script is finished, but not completely, when I finish the Advanced course,
it will be polished and plot holes, etc., will be filled and the story will be improved and ready to turn into an agent!
AnaheimPMWitch 04-06-2003, 02:17 PM I do In fact I would prefer to be a script writer rather then be and actress or be the on in the limelight I'm more behind the scenes (*Laughs* although I wouldnt mind dating someone famous *coughs* Erik *coughs*) I've got a few going now MOST of them are scripts to shows that are already shows and I have a type of Love Story Script I'm working on now as well
I write scripts in my spare time. I have writer's block now though so I've been putting it off for awhile. I also want to be a director, so I hope to use the scripts I write when and if I direct my first film.
*PinkLady* 04-06-2003, 03:20 PM A couple of times, I've read a book that sounds to me like it would be a good movie, and I've tried to write it out with stage directions and stuff. They usually sound pretty lame, though. I like writing, but I'll stick with books and stories.
webuster 04-06-2003, 05:10 PM I hate it when I get a writer's block, or I set the script to the side for a while- I have to go back and read some of the script, and then the way I've wrote the script (Format) changes, and sometimes accidently create plotholes. I want to write a script for a good novel- maybe, if Lord of the rings doesn't make a prequel, Then The Hobbit. And maybe someday do a little shop of horrors thing- and re-adapt a film, remake a film and the eventually, adapt a film to stage.
I've always been interested in writing for TV and movies. I have taken a few writing courses over the years as well, although I have very few completed scripts.
I did write a spec script for "That 70's Show" for one class. I think it's pretty good, if I do say so myself.
I also have written a few original sitcom scripts, and in whatever spare time I have I'm working on a one hour comedy/drama based on the movie "Author Author."
Alas, I would really love to write scripts professionally, but for now it's just a hobby.
BTW, does anyone here besides me use scriptwriting software?
I use Final Draft, and It's a great program.
David 04-06-2003, 06:30 PM i do... i've written 14 for the same show, but I plan to keep them to myself.... lol.. but, i had to change some because sometimes I end up using THree's Company/8 Simple Rules jokes
webuster 04-07-2003, 04:21 PM tjl, have you got your 70's shopr script posted anywhere online? I don't use script software- I don't see wy scripts have to be so complicated to lay our, if you can read it, spaced out, and camera and character actions included, I call it a script. (My camera and character actions are in the same brackets usually)
Born2HaveOwnSitcom 04-07-2003, 05:14 PM I write sitcoms and have wanted to since I was in my teens, I sent a Family Guy spec and my bad luck that it got cancelled a few months after but I got a reply saying they would keep me in mind and how they enjoyed it.

ABlairican Pie 04-07-2003, 10:22 PM Okay, I wanted to keep the suprise about my story, but I'll be more specific:
What if you found out your newborn baby....
...was switched with an ALIEN CREATURE??:eek2:
webuster 04-08-2003, 03:54 PM Cool Premise ABlairica, a few months ago I wrote a few pages for a premise of a film- It involved the FBI mixing up some glasses after breaking into some places, and a womanreceiving IVF treatment is impregnated with an alien baby, but it looks very human, the FBI comes after her, some other stuff happens with the aliens people from it's home planet etc. I've started writing premises for short tv shows (like a 10 minute version of the Twilight Zone) and TV movies.

That sounds cool, I hope my idea sounds original enough to be put into a motion picture...WITHOUT jumping on other people's ideas!! But I'll just have to see...

Sorry, I don't post my scripts anywhere.
Unless you know the e-mail address of an agent...
;)
Warm & Fuzzy 04-09-2003, 06:21 PM I have never personally... but my English teacher is a playwright.
( Can you imagine how harsh he grades our essays? )
webuster 04-11-2003, 05:48 PM I came up with a tv series Idea, it's like Outer Limits and Tales From The Crypt. I write these scripts, some can last an hour some half hour, if I write half hour, then it's two stories to an episode. Anyway, they have sometimes horror, sometimes sci-fi, I'm currently writing the first episode, which looks like it maybe an hour. I'm halfway thorugh episode 1. Anyway, I wanna do these ten minute short stories two, like sometimes when I have a weird dream, make it into a short (dreams don't usually have words, so It'll need to be very artistic, freaky and well edited) or just think of a SHORT story that could be done in 10 minutes like a mini Twilight Zone. The shorts and show could be shown on regular time-slot, instead of popping the short ones in anywhere. I also want to start looking at good books, and trying to write a script. Lately, some films I see I keep imagining as a stage play, and how it could be done (I want to adapt Shock Treatment on stage, since it's very unknown in the UK, i could probably pass it off as my own, without being sued over rights, and fooling some people into doing a production) Bye for now. Everyone keep updating on their scripts.
webuster 05-09-2003, 05:02 PM It's confusing to write scripts at the moment- cos during it I get tonnes of ideas to do, and wanna get them wrote. Anyway- I wrote a new idea- inspired partially by the recent SARS outbreak, Dr. Strangelove and Deep Impact.
Anyway- some scientist goes behind his companies will to experiment with medical chemicals, creating a virus which spreads to workers of the company, so the man destroys his many samples of the virus, but the factory catches fire in the furnace, creating a huge poisonous gas cloud spreading the virus. The virus spreads over huge cities, and begins making it's way abroad. Anyway- the government decide to qurantine the affected in 'concentration camps' but are secretly killing them off slowly to save money. The feds come to take some guys daughter away- but he pretends he's the one with the disease to spare his daughter- when he finds whats happening he escapes, and they try hunting him down. Anyway- the governemtn along with a leader scientist decide to take some people underground and put a timelock of fifty years on a giant underground city to begin again. When they're undergorund, all people look exactly the same- the scientists are trying to purfy humans, then the new civilization is in turmoil, and some people rebel and destroy the city, breaking out after 15 years, to discover earth better than before, when it had been destroyed by looters and panickers and soldiers- and the guy who broke out of the camp is leading the whole new better world, which now has stopped the disease.
Adamantium 05-09-2003, 05:21 PM I wrote a 60 page pilot for a science fiction show. Of course, I didn't do anything with it. It was just for fun. I tried writing a sitcom, but found out that I'm just not funny.
webuster 05-09-2003, 05:45 PM The BBC is the big cheese of networks in the UK for regular broadcast; though it's been going downhill due to the lack of sitcoms: there's only soaps, dramas, news and variety, some kids tv shows but no sitcoms. Anyway- BBC bends the rules farther for anyone looking to get involved. First- the ongoing competitions of BBC talent were you enter a catergoy (comedian, singer, radio personality) and if you win, you get on tv/radio. Also- the BBC has an address for unsolicited ideas- in fact a few addresses, but it has a lot of rules- you can only submit a pilot, not an entire series, unless they're gonna like it, stuff like that, and sitcoms can't be more than 30 minutes, neither can dramas unless given special consideration- stuff like that. Anyway- I'm gonna send away a pilot sitcom, once I write it, and a 'horror/sci-fi' show pilot. There's another address just to sumbit ideas. A few years ago, still now- the stars we loved were America's biggest stars, and the stars that we had ourselves, just stayed within the country, except Catherine Zeta- so we basically depended on america, if the U.S didn't like a sitcom, it affected us- cos 99% of sitcoms here are US- but cos there aired like 6 months after US, the us network doesn't take into account UK ratings. Anyway- I wanna get bbc better, it's a shame- it gets so much funding but wastes it, and loses out in reality tv to younger networks.
harper 05-30-2003, 11:41 AM I cannot imagine what it would be like to write a whole Script with scene detail and Camera Point of view as fast as writers do,You have to have great patients to do so. What Kind of Script Writing do you do?.Have you sold any spect scripts to any studio,I heard it was easy-Good luck
webuster 05-30-2003, 03:08 PM I write mainly comedy scripts- A year ago I wrote a kinda adult variety show- and all the characters, celebrity guests and all are made of clay models, and the presenters who are presenting small sketches are very rude kinda- Santa Claus, Satan, A Leprechaun and some other people presenting. I haven't sold a spec script- I'm looking for scriptwriting comps that don't cost a fortune to enter- and I've found the ideal place to sell a sitcom pilot to once I write it. I always come up with movie ideas- I always want to write a book, but for now every story I come up with I want it as a script. Some are dramas too. I most recently typed up an idea, one I WILL use- it's nothing like this daddy day care thing. Anyway I wrote long and intricate storylines, notes- for instance I think of a joke for the end of the film, and jot it down so as not to forget. Anyway the film is about a parcel delivery guy who is fired, goes through a few jobs before becoming a MALE midwife, and all this funny stuff happens to him, before he forms a relationship with one of the pregnant women, the head nurse tries to get him fired, court case- woman's meddling mother interferes, he keeps job and they live happily ever after kinda. I know- sounds like a typical romantic Adam Sandler/ Rob Schneider flic- but I don't wanna give away much details. I'm coming up with kinda a british version of veronica's closet/ Just Shoot Me- answer me this- was Veronica's Closet based around a fashion designers, or a magazine too?

Actually, it is not recommended that you add camera angles in your script, that is the job of a director. I learned in my course that you're not supposed to. It makes it look unprofessional. About scene detail, you don't necessarily have to go into total specific detail. But yes, it takes some patience.

That hasn't stopped half the TV writers out in Hollywood.
You have seen "Baby Bob," haven't you?
;)
cheers freak 06-01-2003, 10:37 PM Im in the middle of writing a pilot for a sitcom. It is 22 pages so far and I think it is quite good lol. My dream isn't to be a writer but an actor. I wrote myself to play one of the characters. I hope to try to sell it one day but dont know hwere to start lol.

Oh yeah!
I not only write my scripts, but go to great lengths to have them performed.
I am working on my 3rd movie, am working on my radio shows with my friend Dave, write a sitcom that I think would really give a reason for people to watch tv again, and even go on talk radio shows if I want to get into that as well.
As for my 2nd movie "My Crazy Week", I have had it "passed around" to many people.
I do an internet soap-com about life at my work. It is a comedy, yet most of the things I write about are strange, but true. It's like there's a black cloud over that place, with hell right below it. In fact, on Easter I posted my Easter special here.
webuster 06-02-2003, 01:31 PM I haven't seen Baby Bob- I want to cos Paige from Ellen's in it- is it really that bad. It seems flawed anyway- cos once the babys of speaking age it's got no novelty- maybe it does if It speaks like a grown man- now if they did an episode of each day of the baby's life- oh, then the kid would be 23 days old when it's cancelled?
Anyway- has anyone got any of their material made? My cinema is so run down and would show anything- so if I gain the money, I'd make an amateur film myself and get them to show it. Though i'd like anything I wrote put on radio, stage or tv- even if they do it no justice and do the worst production possible.
Polniaczek033 06-03-2003, 04:39 PM i swear 2 god i posted on this thread b4, but i can't find my post so it was obviously deleted, or i am losing my mind
Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! I DO I DO I DO I DO!
i write remakes to the Facts of LIfe, pm me if ya wanna no more
Hollow 06-03-2003, 05:44 PM when i feel like it i write short scripts that i wish would happen. lol 1 time i wrote one about avril. i wrote that she came in the room like "chill out whatcha yellin for" and i started bitching at her and kelly osbourne came in and cussed her out lol and i forgot the rest.
Fan of old shows 06-03-2003, 07:35 PM Im attempting to write a script out of a story i made a few years ago about 2 kids that go into the woods by their house and get captured by cannibals and escape and then jump into a strong flowing river that carries them like 5 miles into no where and they have to get back home. i based it off my home town of Owego New York. i am going up to new york in 3 weeks but its to late to even think about filming it this year. but i say if i work on it this could be a good film.
webuster 06-04-2003, 02:57 PM I'm so glad more people write scripts here! I thought I was the only one- and that I was going crazy cos I keep writing down ideas on pieces of paper all the time then not getting an idea for like a month then they all come back again. Would any of you ever like their scripts made into films? I wouldn't even have enough cash to put into buying the film stock nevermind anything else. Well- if any of us ever get a script made we could start a Sitcomsonline Productions. All your ideas are real interesting.Polniaczek033- I've never seen Facts of Life- are you using the exact same scripts from the original series, or writing completely new episodes or what? I'm hoping to get started on a sitcom soon to send to a production company.
webuster 10-30-2003, 02:02 PM This thread is very old now, but I've started writing scripts again after taking a break to write short stories and to write down hundreds of ideas and start reading books and watching good films for inspiration. Anyway today I started writing a horror/comedy/spoof movie idea- and started a script. But i've wrote about 5 storylines cos I'm not sure how I want to get to the ending (which involves a female old Jewish fugitive, a trucker obsessed with Dolly Parton called Phil, her mother, a girl- her boyfriend and sister, her mom in drag, Liza Minelli and a blow up doll- sounds crazy doesn't it) and I started writing other scripts.
Anyone else doing anything with scripts now?
dawsongirl 10-30-2003, 07:56 PM This may sound weird, but I write stories in script form, then put them in story form. I find it easier.
KerriBerri687 10-30-2003, 07:58 PM i used to!!! for the facts of life:p
but sadly i have no time to do that kind of stuff anymore:(
Kristina 10-30-2003, 08:05 PM I remember posting one of "The Facts of Life" in 2001, let's just say it was pretty bad. I also wrote one for "The Brady Bunch" but the post was deleted. It was vulgar.
AnaheimPMWitch 10-30-2003, 10:46 PM i've started my hand on CSI scripts but they arent that good because well I JUST started watching this summer and I dont know the language all that well
Rebel Queen 1980 10-30-2003, 10:53 PM I am into writing quite often,I want to write a script
but for now I'm into story writing,I want to write a story
based my life,Script writing is pretty cool though.
webuster 10-31-2003, 09:05 AM I wrote a few short stories recently, and I'm still writing another one. I'm going to try convert one into a script- thought it'll probably only last 30 minutes (I hate adding bits to stories sometimes- like the way Hollywood movie writers can make the Cat in the Hat- a five minute story, last 90 minutes). I also wrote a poem (we had to) for school, and a few were picked to be entered into some big poetry competition, I don't know when it's judged or anything. My poem was based on Jesus returning in the modern day and denounced as a lunatic before the world ends. I'd been thinking of that topic for a long time.
ABlairican Pie 11-01-2003, 02:07 AM I got my lesson back from my scriptwriting instructor today!! He says I'm coming along well with my story!! Now how do I tell him I have a new storyline for my script...It's still the same story Idea, but I thought of another way to play it--unless I can combine my two ideas together..
webuster 11-01-2003, 07:06 AM If you're allowed to change storyline- you should do what you think's best. I'd try writing the new script with the new storyline- compare both, and if it seems that you should- combine the two!
I Love Carol Burnett! 12-30-2003, 02:36 PM I write book, tv scripts, and movie scripts. I have wrote a tv show called New York Life. Thats what I'm working on now. I have wrote 25 tv scripts. 8 movie scripts. 32 books never been published of coarse!!
webuster 12-30-2003, 03:24 PM Eunice fan, have you tried to get your work published or tv shows/movies made- you obviously love to write. I love writing, but I find it hard to write full books. I'm still writing a collection of short stories, they're similar to the old Roald Dahl stories used in 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents...'- morality tales, with ironic twists. I'm also considering turning two scripts into short stories. But, even though I'd like a book published I think the easiest way to get the stories read is through a magazine or something- but I'll read on it first. Even if a magazine published them, I still want to be able to publish them as a collection too.
I Love Carol Burnett! 12-30-2003, 03:26 PM I would love to have some of my storys published or tv shows made I've just don't know how
webuster 12-30-2003, 05:44 PM Francis Ford Coppola has the magazine zoetrope- and if your story's good enough it'll be published- it's a quarterly magazine- but if it's published his film company also buy the film rights just in case.
The BBC has some things on their website about submitting unsolicited scripts- I can't afford to get a lawyer for my work, so I need to look for places to accept unsolicited work.
However- when I'm done with all my shorts stories I might buy a collective copyright- it's expensive copyrighting one story (£33 in the UK)
HIGH ENOUGH 12-30-2003, 06:49 PM I write a little.
Sterling Holobyte 12-31-2003, 07:12 PM To those of you who use scriptwriting software; how does it work? Does it format what you write in script form?
I'm interested in writing some of my stories as movie scripts(since I think them up as movies anyway), but I hate the technical side of scriptwriting, i.e. putting them in the proper format, and I am very interested in learning what scriptwriting software will do to help.
Ideally, I wish I could just hook a word processor up to my brain and have my thoughts directly transferred to paper, but until they have that technology.... ;)
webuster 12-31-2003, 08:25 PM I hate the technical side. Some scripts I write really simply- like when you read a play like Shakespeare- hardly any format. But I started writing a bit technically. Now I need to get the software.
But some scripts I write I write for me to make someday- I can understand them. I don't understand why scripts are complicated.
