Frasier is close to being cancelled. Ratings are really down this season. It used to be the show that can beat anything. But ths season, it has really taken a toll. Last season, it ranked #17 overall. Now it's ranking 40th or 50th for new episodes. It's being beaten by the Guardian and 24, which was not possible last season. NBC will most likely announce in May that next season will be the last. If there wasn't a 3 year deal in place to keep it running through May 2004, this would've been the last. Next season, look for Frasier to move it's time slot to a less competitive one.
This season has not been anywhere near average like last. It has been a season of extremes. Every episode has either been better or worse than average. It started out dismal with "Enemy at the Gate", "Proxy, Prexy", "The Harassed", "Door Jam" and a few others throughout the season. But we have seen real comedy once again this season with "Rooms With a View", Fraternal Schwinns", "Daphne Does Dinner", "Some Assembly Required" and a handful of others.
Being a huge Frasier fan, NBC and Paramount need to do the right thing-end Frasier on a good note like they did with Cheers. This way it won't be remembered for the show that stayed too long.
