I have alot of tapes which I haven't put on the board yet because I have been going through all of them taking out all commercials so it's easier to watch. And of course I have been documenting each episode.
But then I see post saying (such & such a show with original commercials).
Why would the commercials be valuable? Does everyone trade tapes just to trade or do you actually sit and watch them because you enjoy the show? I love to go from one show to the next without 20 minutes on commercials going on.
Any ideas.

I dont just trade to trade, I generally watch the shows I trade/tape for. Although right now I'm so far behind it might be Christmas before I can watch them...

Anyhow as for commercials. I have some original 80's Silver Spoons with 80's commercials. It's like listening to 80's music ... it's just nostalgic. I also don't have time to edit commercials when I tape/trade.

I dont mind them being in there and if they are older commercials I will probably watch them just for the memories :)

A Dual Deck Go Video takes out most of the commercials. It costs around $200, but it saves a whole lot of time.

What is a duel deck go video? Are you talking about two vcr's in one machine? We live in Long Island New york and have looked all over for one but can't find any. Do you know where you can get them?

We live in North Dakota, and believe me, it's pretty tough to find mark anything out of the ordinary in nearby stores (thank the Lord for modern technology!), even at Walmart.

Yes, it is two VCR's in one machine. We bought ours at Heartland America (http://www.heartlandamerica.com/).

It works pretty good, though it does not cut out the music CD advertisements, for some reason. When copying shows on TV Land, it even leaves in the blips before the shows, like when they have a Marathon and one of the actors from the show makes comments on them. It is also a bit complicated to figure out, for these blonde roots, but once I got the information into my brain, it worked like a charm.

By the way, the Go Video doesn't actually cut out commercials but mark the VHS as it's recording. And then when you want to either play it or copy it on the opposite VCR, it skips the commercials (which you can opt to override). There is a slight pause, but it fast forwards through on its own, and the new video you've just made won't have the delay (no markings). Marking the videos doesn't affect the tape when in another VCR either. I have no idea how this works, but we certainly appreciate it.

It seems to me, though, that recently I saw an advertisement for an individual VCR that cuts out the commercials, which might possibly be cheaper than the Go Video.

I use the Go-Video machine too. I got mine at Circuit City. The internet is a great tool to find out what electronics chains near you carry. Best Buy has a website, or even Sears may carry it. I'm not sure.

Anyway, as far as commercials goes, I don't mind them. I used to edit the commercials out of everything but stopped doing so recently cuz my editing jobs just weren't coming out as smoothly as I would have liked. Other people's editing jobs aren't that great either sometimes lol :p However, if the commercials are vintage commercials from the 70s and 80s, then I LOVE THEM!! :D I find them just as fun as watching the show and feel they complete the whole retro flashback experience nicely. I just found a tape recently with the 80s Burger King commercial that featured pint-sized Emmanuel Lewis from the show Webster and it really made my day seeing that again! It may seem hard to believe but there are people out there that collect/trade ONLY commercials. How's that for a spin on this hobby? ;)

I've been looking for a Go Video VCR for a while now too. I just really don't have the cash for it now... It sounds like a dream though, lol, making taking out commercials much easier.

I know this may be a little "late" but for commercials, what I do is this:

TV Land/Nick @ Nite/TBS, etc.: I cut all the commercials out (if I have the time)

ABC/CBS/Made for tv Movies, etc: I leave the commercials in.

I guess it just has something to do with "original broadcasts". I can't stand the commercials anymore, there are just far too many, so if I can, I cut them out of shows I tape in reruns, but not original broadcasts.

I find it so much better to have no commercials when I sit down to watch, say, a tape of The Munsters, then to have to fast forward through at least, 8 minutes of commercials.

I guess it all just has to do with personal preference.

I agree, I hate to sit through at least 10 commercials when you are watching your favorite shows, because some shows I can watch over and over. So I have been trying to edit them out. But when I kept seeing posts about commercials, it seemed like everyone wants them. Thats great because it will make life alot easier.
It's funny when everyone calls the 70's & 80's vintage tv because soon "now" will be considered vintage.

We did go to circut city last night to buy the duel recorder. I am really grateful for everyones advise. It did cost $200 plus tax etc. But I thilnk it will be worth it. Now at least I will be able to trade with everyone.
