There was a recent show on my local UPN (or some network) that was a two-parter. Mary got sick and had to go to Rochester to have a surgery. Ma and Pa went, and Laura stayed with the Edwards.
I caught bits and pieces of it, and saw Pa and Mr Edwards go to work blasting a hole through a mountain.
Can someone give me more info on this episode(s)? Why was Mary sick? How did they pay for it? Etc?!?
Thanks!

I think she had to have her appendix out or something. Pa was going to sell the farm to pay for it but then he and Mr. Edwards were offered that job building a road or something and were paid a lot of money so that's how he paid for the surgery. I haven't seen this ep in a long time so I know I left some things out.

The reason Mary had to have surgery because she was in the barn and I think the barn caught on fire, (or something happened to disturb the horse) and the horse ended up kicking Mary. She got really sick from it, and did not get better so the Ingall's took her to a hospital.

I don't recall a fire. I do recall the horse acting up and kicking Mary in the stomach. I think she developed an intestine infection.

it was funny tho when mr. edwards punched charles lights out in that ep when he thought charles was getting too full of himself.
The episdoe that this happens in, I belive is the two parter, I'll be waving as you drive away
Mary wasn't kicked by a horse when she accidently set the barn on fire. Those were the episodes where she was starting to have trouble with her eyes. She was in the barn reading with the lamp for some reason, I remember her telling her mother after the fire was out that she didn't understand how it happened, that she couldn't see that good. That is the moment that Caroline realizes that they have to tell Mary what is happening to her. She didn't get in trouble because ma and pa knew what was happening , but Laura who didn't know yet got real mad because they didn't.
This is the answer to the surgery question:
62. To Live With Fear (1) (edit)

Mary has an accident with a horse in the barn. When Mary starts to get worse, the Ingalls take her to a specialist. There they learn that Mary needs an immediate operation.
63. To Live With Fear (2) (edit)
First aired: 2/21/1977
Writer: John Hawkins
Director: William F. Claxton
Guest star: Victor French (Mr. Isaiah Edwards (guest star prior to season 2)), Ivan Bonar (Dr. Mayes), Victor French (Mr. Edwards) , James Shigeta (Sam Wing), John McLiam (Harris), James Sikking (Franklin), Darrell Zwerling (Horace Benson), M.P. Murphy (Clancy), Naomi Ross (Nurse Johnson), Cordy Clark (Sarah Mulligan), Paul King (Chinese Workman), Sheldon Coburn (Dr. Washburn)
Caroline stays with Mary who suddenly needs another operation. Charles leave and take on a high risk job to pay for the operation for Mary and Mr. Edwards goes with him. They take a job as a couple of Powder Monkeys making a tunnel for the railroad. But safety is far at the back of Charles' mind as he takes risks, refusing to stop even when a funeral of a Chinese worker takes place. This rush inevitably causes a cave-in where Charles and Harris are buried.

Is she supposed to be at the Mayo clinic? I could swear the credits of the episode show her doctor with the name "Dr. Mayo." Maybe he's even called Dr. Mayo in the episode, but I can't remember.
Perhaps I should make a new thread for this, but everytime I watch this episode I am curious about something so posting in here works. What training did nurses have to have during this time period? I always find it a little funny when Caroline is discussing with a nurse a way to earn money and she says, "I know I can't qualify as a nurse." I'm always thinking, "Well duh, Caroline! Is it even worth mentioning?" Of course, that is the attitude for recent times. I'm sure training back then to qualify as a nurse was different, but I am wondering how different. The oldest nurse I know of is a great-aunt of mine who became a registered nurse in 1924, and she had to go through 4 years or training, just like it is now.
