Just wondering what everyone thought about the last 2-3 seasons of Family Matters, when alot of the storylines revolved around completely unrealistic Urkel inventions, like his time-traveling, transformation machine, trip into space, etc, etc, etc.

Personally, I thought these were horrible story twists, and the only thing that kept the show watchable at this point was the likability of the characters.

Family Matters was at it's peak in the early-mid 90s when they dealt with real issues and had realistic plots. The show was hilarious and completely on top of it's game then. They must have run out of ideas or something.

Anyone else agree (or disagree)?

The Urkel character became old and since the original mother was gone, it was time to pull the plug.

I watched the later years, but one thing bothered me. Urkel was in his late teens, maybe early twenties (I forget), and his voice still hadn't changed. Being a nerd is one thing. But even nerds' voiced change as they get older. I couldn't stand Urkel as Myrtel. I liked when he became Stephan the first time, but after that, it became insane. Family Matters went from a nice family comedy to becoming a science fiction comedy. I also didn't like the second Harriet. If I were the people behind the show, since it was towards the end of the season, I would not of replaced her. And then if the show was renewed for another season (which it wasn't) then I would have made an official decision. I would say she would have died, but too many people would be mad at me.

The show shoud have ended when the original mother left. All that walking into a chamber and coming out a different person was WACKY. Urkel was the J.J of the 90's. Family Matters started out as a family comedy and then turned into the Urkel Show.

I started watching Family Matters in late 1990 when Steve Urkel was considered part of the show. I soon got into the show and was familiar with his character, laughing at his scientific experiments and surprise entrances into the Winslow house. My favorite catch phrases became "Did I do that?", "Heh-heh-heh! (snort snort!)", "Greetings, Winslows!", "Go home, go home, go home, go home, go home!", and "I don't have to take this. I'm going home!", plus Carl's "YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" directed at the "Urk Man."

I wouldn't mind ABC still running it today (when it would be in its fourteenth season). A half-hour of Urkel antics and science gone awry per week (which we had from 1989-1998) would last me sufficiently for the rest of my life.

I think the last couple of seasons were awful. Like the original author of this post mentioned, the storylines were just too unbelievable and silly.

I don't remember much after the 1994-1995 season. I think I stopped watching after then.

Urkel was too old. It was almost comical to see Jaleel White at his age still doing Steve Urkel

Laura and Richie were both too old as well

The storys weren't very good and, as a result, didn't even run smoothly

The same reasons I think FULL HOUSE got dumped: the adults could not carry the show themselves

I didn't mind the later episodes. I think the reason they changed the show so much is to boost the ratings and keep it on the air. If they would have stuck with the way things were, then there's a good chance that we wouldn't have 9 seasons of Family Matters to remember.

It should have been over when ABC cancelled it. When they went over to CBS it was like undercutting all the good stuff they had done before. I agree the stories were way over the top. By the way Urkel's voice did change it was his nasal delivery that stayed.

Urkel's voice changed in real life long before the show was over(Remember Stefan?)

My feelings are mixed. I liked some of the episodes from the 9th season, and some I hated. I still hate that it went to CBS. I never knew this, but found this out today on TV Tome:


NOTE: This was never meant to be the series finale. The cast and crew were told to finish filming the season by March and get ready for another season. The 1oth season would have featured the wedding of Steve and Laura. However it was learned that CBS had the sets for the show destroyed and that's when the cast knew the series was over.

I HATE when that happens to shows!!! :mad:

The show would have gone totally stale if it went on for another season.

Just like The Nanny. Fran and Max get married; and instead of the show ending there and on a high note, it continues for a while and ends up totally flat.

I prefer the earlier seasons.
I agree that Stefon was fun the first time, but not again.



It should have ended on ABC with the original Harriet.
