View Full Version : California or Europe Beruche 09-25-2001, 10:19 PM Which episodes do you think were better the ones from California or from Europe? I like the california episodes better. tdr 09-26-2001, 12:49 AM I like the Europe eps a little better. They were obviously beginning to run out of ideas for the limited NY apartment setting, so the Hollywood eps begin the move toward spacing out. But then the hotel room in Hollywood became just another stage setting like the NY apartment, though with more possibilities around them. But in Europe they kept moving into vastly different settings, and thus into broader comedy possibilities. I'm not sure they took full advantage of them, but they did what they could in the indoor sets with the audience. jamier42 09-26-2001, 04:32 PM I like the California ones better. dawsongirl 09-26-2001, 05:34 PM I like California better. I think the episodes were just generally funnier. QueenOfTheGypsies 09-26-2001, 05:41 PM The California episodes were definitely better. So many great episodes - "Ethel's Hometown," "L.A. At Last," "Harpo Marx," "Lucy Gets In Pictures," and "In Palm Springs" to name just a few. Most of the Europe episodes are pretty lackluster and forgettable - with the exception of just a few. ------------------ Lucy: "Ever since we said 'I do' there are so many things we don't." Lucy : "That must be my dear friend Ethel. I'll open the door, Fred." Fred : "Open it?! I was going to lock it!" Lucy : "Gee, did you hear that, honey? It's going to be called "Bitter Grapes." I wonder what part they want me for." Fred : "Oh, you're probably going to be one of the bunch." CherryBombK 09-27-2001, 03:11 PM I thought Ethel was from New Mexico on ILL? ------------------ ~*~Kristin~*~ "Rock and Roll music, I don't think it'll ever die completely out because they're gonna have to get something mighty good to take its place." - Elvis Presley "Love yourself first, and everything will fall into line." - Lucille Ball "When I came to this country we didn't have a cent in our pockets. From cleanin' cananry cages to this night here in New York, I would like to say Thank you America, Thank you." -Desi Arnaz QueenOfTheGypsies 09-27-2001, 06:13 PM Originally posted by CherryBombK: I thought Ethel was from New Mexico on ILL? But I consider "Ethel's Hometown" to be one of the California episodes, because they stopped in New Mexico on their way to Hollywood. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif ------------------ Lucy: "Ever since we said 'I do' there are so many things we don't." I'm not too crazy about the John Wayne ones though. Some of the European ones are funny, and some are not, like the ones in England. dawsongirl 09-27-2001, 10:44 PM Originally posted by Marta2: I'm not too crazy about the John Wayne ones though. Me either! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif LucyCompanyPhan 09-28-2001, 08:32 PM i like california better. I love the John Waynes ones! thats a classic one. How can u NOT like it!! ------------------ I <3 LUCY! Lucy" I saw a sign that said take one so i took one. After that i took anything even if it didnt say take on. I took a bright new bicycle, a shiny new penny. I even took a little boy... yeah but my mommy made me take him back." D&R 09-29-2001, 07:26 AM California, but the ones from Europe are good too. ------------------ ;) Have a nice day ;) Terry Ross 09-29-2001, 07:30 PM Ethel was from Albuquerque, New Mexico {Vivian Vance was from Kansas}. And that episode, "Ethel's Hometown" is part of the California trip. California and Europe trips were my favorites but California has an edge - - there were more celebrities and the comedy was pure genius. The Scotland episode was oneof the worst they ever made. In "Ethel's Home Town," she is too much out of character; and although the stage antics by L, R, and F are funny, it is ridiculous that she would not have been aware of their presence behind her and to the left and right entrances. Interestingly, Ethel's dad is played by the same actor [Irving Bacon] who in the 1st season was the hotel clerk/bellhop/service station owner/sheriff when L & R go to get married again after the silly marriage license fiasco. It has been pointed out that Vivian Vance is really from Kansas, but she did also live in Albuquerque in her early years, I am sure I have read. 1669 10-12-2001, 11:56 PM I prefer the Europe episodes to the California ones. I love it when Lucy dreams of Scotland, meets the queen of England, goes gambling in Monte Carlo, etc. ------------------ |
