What was the reason for the hiatus between April 1992 and July 1993, in which we did not get to see any original episodes?

That's a long hiatus! I didn't watch the show in its original run, so I don't know.

I believe it had been originally decided to end the series in '92 after the 7th season, but was renewed & they filmed the 8th season/last 6 episodes & ABC didn't decide to run them until the summer of '93.

My understanding was that they had begun filming a new season, and after the first few episodes were done, ABC decided not to renew it. And so they eventually showed the unaired final episodes the following summer.

I remember when it came back. That was a great day. Too bad it ended a month or so later. I remember watching the series finale. The scene where Balki and Larry are hanging for their lives was funny. But I remember being disturbed by Balki grabbing Larry's hair and nose.

So Perfect Strangers was cancelled in 1992, but they had already filmed six episodes for the 1992-1993 season thinking it would be brought back. So after it was cancelled ABC burned them off in the summer.

It seems like a lot of long running comedies suffered that unfortuate summer burnoff.

Perfect Strangers
Mr. Belvedere
Hogan Family
Family Matters
Step by Step
Just Shoot Me
Drew Carey Show
Hangin with Mr. Cooper

I am sure there are others I did not list.
