I have a bet going on with my son. Even though I'm certain that you never see Ward Cleaver smoking, I am just as certain that in several episodes you see a pipe rack on Ward's desk or bookshelf in the study.

Can anyone colarorate that or deny it?

I will have to take another look, but I will tell you this, I just saw an old movie with Hugh B. where he plays P.I. Denny O'Brien and that character is ALWAYS smoking a pipe. Maybe there was some discussion as to whether Ward should smoke or not that was never resolved.

I don't recall seeing the pipe rack. There was an episode, though, when Beaver and Larry smoke tobacco in Ward's pipe. It was a new pipe so they washed it out with soap to cover their tracks, lol. It didn't work.

I remember that when Beav smoked, Ward got VERY angry at him for doing so and even went onto talk about how unhealthy it was. Remember, this was the late 1950's- a good decade BEFORE the Surgeon General's report!

I am not sure for certain, but I remember someone saying that in the first or second season you can see a pack of cigarettes in Ward's pocket. I have yet to notice this though. As for a pipe, I remember an episode where Wally is having a party and Ward says something about getting his pipe from the den(as an excuse to go downstairs), but I can't remember what the conversation between June and Ward was, she might have said that he doesn't smoke a pipe or something. Does anyone remember this?

Ward was a smoker -- at least in the first season, as a pack of cigarettes were clearly visible in his shirt pocket in the early episodes. You never saw them after that.

Ward and June both underwent many changes in the first 2 seasons. Ward was looser, probably explains the "cool" look of cigarettes in his front shirt pocket.

I think this is mixing 2 different eps. In "June's Birthday," Ward goes up to the boys' room to give them $5 to buy June a birthday present. When he comes back downstairs, June asks him (as if she is surprised he had any reason to be upstairs), "What were you doing upstairs?" Ward, to conceal the plans for her birthday, replies "Oh-- I was looking for my pipe." June says, "You don't smoke a pipe." Ward concludes, "No wonder I couldn't find it," and he walks away.

Then it is in the final season ep, "The Party Spoiler," that Wally is planning his party and asking his parents if they will be "coming downstairs to look for your pipe or something." Ward says, "Only if the trip seems justified." After Wally leaves, June asks Ward, "How did your parents handle the situation when you had a party?" Ward says, "My father came down to look for his pipe." Then, during the party, Ward and June, upstairs in their room, notice that it is quiet downstairs, and June says, "Do you think it's time to go down and look for your pipe?"
