Andy Griffith is an alright sherrif, that is until we get to the episodes without Don Knotts. After Knotts leaves, Griffith seems to just drag around the set without any enthusiasm. He was a decent sitcom actor until the color episodes.

Same situation with Matlock: he was pretty decent ... until he got fat and started heavily slurring his words.

Did he have a stroke while doing Matlock? I ask only because his slurring does get really terrible as the show progresses.

Ah yeah, I agree with you. When I answered the question originally, I thought mainly of the black and white seasons. I try to block out the color seasons all together.

You know, I don't know if Andy had a stroke during Matlock. I know he had some sort of health problem, but I can't remember if it was before Matlock or during Matlock, maybe it was even after. I want to say it was during Matlock.

If I'm the party spoiler, it won't be the first time. But how many sheriffs are we even familiar with in 'tv history?' I really can't even think of another who was a major character in a comedy show. In most old westerns which centered around a lawman, it was a marshal-- town marshal or US marshal-- but come to think of it, Andy was more like one of them and less like the chief law officer for a county.

I do like the AGS, but it seems it would have been hard for Andy to ever become a competent sheriff in a town like Mayberry where there was hardly ever any crime to deal with. But his role as sheriff, of course, is really more symbolic-- he spends more time protecting the townspeoples' sensitive feelings from each other than protecting against criminals.
