I am taking economics this semester and this is one of the questions I have to answer. Suppose you were to considering to share an apartment with a roommate or two. What concerns would you have and what rules would you establish? I am not moving out anytime within the next few years and I have no desire to so I need some input from people who have had roommates in an apartment or house.

Note: I will come up with these on my own, so I'm not going to plagiarize. I just need a good idea of what everyone would do in these cases.

1. If someone's going to spend the night, keep them in your room.

2. Clean up after yourself

3. You touch my coffee, I'll stuff you into the brewer

Never move in with your best friend. Thats the worst thing you can do. If I were to ever move out, Id live by myself. I could never live with a roomate. Ive lived in my house as only child my whole life-- why the hell would I want to start sharing now?!? If I had to move in with someone though, Id move in with a stranger through an ad. Id rather move in with someone I dont know then to jeopardize a good friendship. And, you never know, you could make a friend for life out of that. But, my best advice is still get your OWN place.

If you were already living with someone and were making rules, these would be mine:

Split the bills 50/50 to make it fair.
You touch the remote you're gonna get a TVGuide shoved up your ass.
No crazy pets like tarantulas. A dog would be cool.
I dont want your loser friends coming over everynight and partying.
Split the cleaning duties even.

Thats about it.

Crystal speaks the truth.

I roomed w/ my best friend in college and it became hell on earth.

Rules...rules...let's see: These apply to dorms as I've never shared an apartment w/ anyone.

Respect other's schedules. If one person has to get up early, the other person better not stay up all night being loud.

Don't touch my stuff w/o permission!!!

Don't let them anywhere near your computer. Or within sight distance.

Ugh...sharing a TV is a pain in the butt.

No overnight guests...know what I mean?

Don't be stupid and like leave the door unlocked so my stuff can get stolen.

im going to have an awful time when i ever do have to have roommates....im an only child and ive never shared a room, a tv, or even a bathroom (other than retreats, seminars, and trips- but not at home)

-touch my stuff (especially tapes) and DIE
-keep it reasonably clean (im a little bit of a neat freak...)
-no smoking
-split the rent even
-my cat stays
-dont tie up the phone all the time
-tell me before inviting people over

my biggest concern would be that im an insomniac, and i need my space, and i just would have a miserable time sharing a room. ;)

well, i have a roomate and these are kinda the ''unspoken'' rules...

--If you have overnight "buddies" come over, don't get too loud
--Split the rent, 50/50, and the bills are split up evenly
--Party at my place? Fine. Drunken puke fest, no.

and other than just your basic, "Clean up after yourself deals", that's about it... oh but one thing HE HAS TO DO is clean up that damn bathroom! I don't care if your mamma picked up after you for the past 20 years... it's ova now.

Everyone has their name on the lease.
Everyone must have their own phone number.
Bills are split evenly.
Security deposit is split evenly but if someone does something to cause damage they are solely responsible.
Cleaning/taking out the trash is split evenly except for the kitchen - you cook it, you clean it.
Food belongs to the person who purchases it (one of my roommates in college ate everything I brought home).
No one can have an overnight guest more than X times per week (this sounds kind of picky but you can find yourself in a situation where someone is staying there every night but not sharing the cost or responsibilities).

-Late on your share of the rent and I have to put in for you? You pay me back.

-No sex... seriously.

-No drugs and/or alcohol, and most of all, NO SMOKING. I don't want those things in my nice clean house.

-Don't screw up the computer

-Don't steal my stuff

-If you finish the pot of coffee, guess who's waking up at 5 to make a fresh one

-First and foremost, respect my space. There will be numerous pieces of large furniture up your you-know-what if this rule is broken.
-Clean up after yourself. I don't want to live in a junkyard.
-Keep your life separate from mine.
-Like cats.
-Don't smoke, get smashed or get high. See "respect my space" for details on punishment.

No Smoking or drugs

No Pets except small ones that can be kept in a cage

Don't get a phone hooked up, have everyone use their own cell phones instead. That way everyone is financially responsible for the calls they make and also I don't have to be awakened in the middle of the night to answer a phone call for someone else

No loud music

Don't have overnight guests all the time, once in a while is fine but not every night
