View Full Version : I Love Lucy on TV Land?
Terry Ross 04-28-2001, 07:51 PM Wait a minute! Let me get this straight? Are you saying that when TV Land starts to air "I Love Lucy", Nick-at-Nite is going to remove the show? Why? Both networks are owned by the same company (Viacom) and in the past, I know that they have run the same show on both networks at the same time. TV Land is not available on my cable system so I would be really bummed out if Nick didn't air it at all. Maybe Lucy will continue to air at 1:00AM on Nick and perhaps it will air in primetime on TV Land.
Anyone know for sure?
Pavan 04-28-2001, 08:07 PM The press releases are saying it is 'MOVING' to TVLand. I'm sure it will not be on N@N. They are adding 2 shows this fall, and ILL is one show that will be dropped.
Tell your cable company to, Take me to TVLand!
callmetootie 04-28-2001, 08:18 PM My guess is that I Love Lucy will be dropped from the line-up with The Beverly Hillbillies and Laverne and Shirley. I know that Family Ties and Cheers are going to be the new shows on N@N this fall.

dawsongirl 04-28-2001, 08:41 PM It's my understanding that N@N is going more 80's, while TVLand is showing the classic stuff. It has something to do with N@N wanting to appeal more to the parents of the kids who watch Nick, and they believe the 80's stuff is what they grew up on.
Terry Ross 05-05-2001, 07:31 PM Thanks to everyone who responded. I can't believe that Nick would relinquish all broadcasting rights to "I Love Lucy" to its little sister network. . especially since TV Land is NOT available in all cable systems (like mine, for instance). The irony here is that I was offered a job at TV Land last year and turned it down (I work in audience research). But I have a contact there who I plan on calling this week. I'm very upset. This show has been my favorite show for as long as I can remember and now I won't even be able to see it.

TV Favorites 05-13-2001, 09:49 PM I Love Lucy is moving to TV Land October 25, 2001, I believe.
(EDIT: Actually the date is October 15, 2001. I hit the wrong key on the keyboard.)

dawsongirl 05-14-2001, 10:16 PM Actually, it's the 15th of October, the 50th anniversary of ILL's premiere.
EJoshuaP 05-16-2001, 06:15 PM That is true, "I Love Lucy" will be on TV Land this fall! And I can't wait, maybe then I can see it on Saturday nights and maybe then it'll be on at an earlier time slot then the filty late night on Nick at Nite! I hope it don't dissapear like The Munsters! Cheers, Cosby Show, Family Ties joins Nick at Nite this fall, and next fall is Roseanne!
Terry Ross 05-19-2001, 07:40 PM I track TV viewership for a living and I can tell you that "I Love Lucy" remains one of Nick-at-Nite's most watched shows. Nick never wanted to give up "Lucy" to TV Land but is being forced to due to the brand identities of the two networks.
Rest assured, "I Love Lucy" will always be on some network's line-up. It remains a classic show 50 years after it premiered, which is unheard up of in television.
Betsy 05-19-2001, 10:49 PM Terry, I don't doubt that I Love Lucy is one of, if not the top, draw on N@N. I just don't see why they need to move it to TV Land...Maybe the better question is, why is N@N becoming an 80's channel? They should make TV Land the 80s channel. I have to admit that I am very biased since TV Land is not available on my cable system....
I just cross my fingers that N@N doesn't dump Lucy unceremoniously by not finishing it's run (up to episode 35 by now)...
betsy
Terry Ross 05-20-2001, 07:12 PM Betsy - I totally agreee with you. But Nickelodeon, which is Nick-at-Nite in the daytime hours, caters to kids. And what they have done is to program to those kids' parents to try to keep families tuned to the same network. So, what do they do with the old TV shows that they bought? They create a brand new network called TV Land and program all of those oldie-but-goodie shows. Believe me, I am bummed out too because I can't get TV Land, either. I spoke to an associate of mine at TV Land (I work in TV) who told me that Nick hates to give up "Lucy" but has to due to branding. I think it's a lousy idea since much of the country doesn't get TV Land.
Betsy 05-20-2001, 08:47 PM Thanks for the info, Terry! It makes me feel better to know that I am not the only one really bummed about this...I only wish we could all get TV Land so we wouldn't be in this position.
I guess I understand where N@N is coming from, and it does comfort me a bit to know that N@N is only moving Lucy very reluctantly...I was so angry for a while, that I dashed off an email to the postmaster for N@N....
Is there any way your friend would know if TVLand intends to make itself more available to a wider audience?
Thanks!
betsy
dawsongirl 05-21-2001, 01:21 AM Okay, I'm biased too because I do get TV Land (thanks to that satellite dish industry) and without that channel I would have nothing to watch on TV. But, I don't think Nick is doing Lucy any good. Midnight? Come on people. What I think we need is a channel that shows 50's-early 60's shows (i.e. Lucy, Danny Thomas, Ozzie & Harriet, maybe Dick Van Dyke), a channel that shows mid 60's-70's (i.e. lot's of what TV Land shows now) and a channel that shows 80's-early 90's. That would be a good idea. And don't just restict it to sitcoms. I want to see dramas too. One of my favorite shows is a cop show.
I guess what I'm saying is Viacom or whoever owns those two networks needs to start a new one for the really early stuff.
Whooooo! 200 posts!
[This message has been edited by dawsongirl (edited 05-21-2001).]
Terry Ross 05-25-2001, 10:35 AM Betsy - TV Land is constantly trying to get cable systems to carry their network but unfortunately, there just isn't enough channel capacity. Digital television is making way for more channels but until then, if your cable system doesn't carry it, you only other choice is satellite. I live in a townhouse development and I can't get a satellite dish (against the association's rules).
Yes, dawsongirl, Viacom owns TV Land and Nick and MTV and Showtime and VH1.
I am really disgusted with this whole switch. I wish Nick would play Lucy at the sametime that TV Land does but these two networks are so into branding their images that they're not thinking of their viewers. Like Betsy. Like me.
I wonder if there is any truth to the rumor that TV Land is more expensive for cable companies to carry then other networks such as Animal Planet and Food Network and some of those others? I thought that was a possibilty as to why more cable companies don't carry it.
My cable company did not add it until December 1999.
[This message has been edited by TJ (edited 05-25-2001).]
dawsongirl 05-25-2001, 10:47 PM Animal Planet is probably cheap because no one watches it. Well, someone does, but not a whole lot of people. A few years back my cable system added AP, no one watched and it was dropped.
My cable system (which actually I dumped last year in favor of a dish) added TV Land last month to basic cable from digital cable. And I thought if Des Moines had it, everyone did.
Terry Ross 05-26-2001, 07:03 PM TJ - I don't know about the costs but I do know that TV Land has had some issues with Cablevision, which is my cable system. It had to do with TV Land hiring an executive away from Cablevision or something. All I know is that my sources at TVLand say that Cablevision will never carry TVLand.
There are certain cable networks that charge a higher premium, like ESPN. I'm not sure how TV Land compares to the Food Network but I would imagine it would get more money than a very niche network like Food or evenAnimal Planet.
Betsy 05-26-2001, 09:11 PM Terry, you and I have the same system, Cablevision, as I live out on Long Island...no wonder we share the same frustration!
If the reason Cablevision does not carry, or will not carry, TVLand,is because of some ridiculous incident with an employee....well, boy, that really ticks me off. I have a good mind to call Cablevision and threaten to cancel our service.!
Terry Ross 05-27-2001, 07:19 PM You're right, dawsongirl. And, in fact, all of the cable systems are losing subscribers to the dish companies, which is why they have created 'digital television', which is the cable system's answer to satellite. There are hundreds of channels available on digital (like satellite) but my dopey cable system (Cablevision) is scheduled to be the very last system to roll out digital.
I share your frustrations, Betsy, but you'll only punish yourself if you cancel your cable because unless you get a dish, all you'll have left will be the broadcast networks and PBS.
I still am so angry at the thought of losing Lucy in October. And so frustrated because I can't do anything about it.
Betsy 05-27-2001, 10:20 PM Terry, even if I wanted to, I couldn't cancel our Cablevision...I live with my parents, and I don't think they'd be too happy.. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif
The only way to express our great unhappiness is to stick it to N@N where it hurts: the pocketbook. I love Family Ties, but I can live without it. I never saw Cheers, and while Cosby Show was funny when it was on, it's not one of my favorites. Basically, without Lucy (and the other classics), I have no interest in N@N whatsoever, and I plan to protest the loss of Lucy by completely ignoring N@N on my remote control. Maybe if enough people did this, it would help.
If N@N is really upset about this move, (a) they better do a marathon of Lucy before it goes off the air and (b) they could have found some way to accomodate those w/o TV Land
Sorry to repeat myself so often, but I feel better after venting!
Betsy
dawsongirl 05-28-2001, 01:28 AM Betsy, that's what this board is for; to vent! I know after ILL goes off Nick, I won't watch it anymore. I just don't like 80's shows. I think it's because I grew up watching them. And I do get TV Land. But then I persuaded my folks to get a dish so I could get this and the Game Show Network. We could have gotten digital cable because living in the burbs, we got the priviledge first, but we were already paying $45 bucks a month and digital would have been about the same as a dish and a dish has more channels.
I'm not promoting the dish industry, honest. I just think it sucks the way the cable industry thinks they have strings attached to their customers backs and they control them like marionettes. Oh, that and networks not listening to their customers.
I'm gonna start my own network!
dawsongirl 05-28-2001, 01:33 AM GSN is doing the same thing at the end of the year. They're getting rid of all the Goodson-Todman game shows. What's with these networks? Are they trying to make us mad?!
Terry Ross 05-28-2001, 08:54 AM They need more research done. I grew up watching shows in the 60's and 70's; never, ever even liked the shows from the 80's. They weren't different; they all blended together. "My Three Sons" and "Make Room For Daddy" are the shows I remember as a kid. And I know "Sons" is on TV Land.
One last thing about these cable systems. They raise our rates every year (at least Cablevision does) and never give us more channels for oyur money. And the final insult is the way they treat us: they won't carry TV Land because of some ridiculous feud about an executive that went to work for TV Land. A personal grudge and innocent subscribers suffer the consequences. I watch Lucy in the morning at 5:00AM as I'm getting up. As long as I can remember, I was able to watch this top, most excellent show. I'm seriously thinking of writing a letter to Nick . . . and I've never done anything like that before.
dawsongirl 05-28-2001, 11:09 PM I wrote a letter to Nick once when they unceremoniously dropped The Monkees in 1997 and chewed them out out about how they liked to drop shows without warning (well, chewed out was harsh, it wasn't that bad). Anyway, I never heard a thing back from them. They probably threw the letter away.
Terry Ross 06-02-2001, 07:59 PM I hate to have to admit this, because I do work in television, but when you write to television networks, they never answer you and the letters are lost in mounds of paper.
You know, I was noticing that TV Land and Nick are both currently running Andy Griffith so I will hold out hope that they may both air Lucy in the fall.
Terry Ross 06-02-2001, 08:01 PM I hate to have to admit this, because I do work in television, but letters written to a television network are never acknowedged and are most likely filed away someplace.
I noticed that TV Land and Nick are both running Andy Griffith right now. So I can hold out hope that they may both air Lucy in the fall. Why not? They're owned by the same company. "Law & Order" is on NBC, A&E, and beginning this Tuesday, TNT.
dawsongirl 06-04-2001, 01:11 AM Well, let's hope you're right. You can never have to much Lucy!

Looks like I better whip out those blank tapes and start recording this summer. Guess it just goes to show that N@N is like every other money grubbing network, sacrifices the good things to make some extra dough. I liked things a lot better when Dick Van Dyke was chairperson of Nick at Nite! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif

JamesTR 06-09-2001, 03:48 PM ...N@N are really idiots to drop ILL. Lucy was classic, no doubt about it.
I would just like to add that "I love Lucy" is entertaining to all ages. My sister and i are 12 and 14 respectively and we stay up every night to watch the wonderful show. Nick at Nite is wrong to assume that only 80's shows are what people born in the 70's want. People want good quality television and ILL qualifies under that!! ILL was the originator of all comedy as it is today and to dump that groundbreaking show on a bad network that noone watches or has is preposterous. I also think it is sad that "The Lucy Desi Comedy Hour" is not aired with the "I love Lucy" programs considering they all have the same characters and all have to do with the ongoing story of the Ricardos' and Mertzes.

Marta 06-17-2001, 09:57 AM Ty,
I agree with you. I'm 13 and I hardly watch any new tv, all I watch is The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, ILL(of course) and basically any other old shows. I wish that N@N would think about how ILL and all the other old good shows that are still alive today.

oldiesgirl 06-18-2001, 06:46 AM I am glad I got TV Land. I wonder why Nite At Nite is taking it off the air.
Terry Ross 06-23-2001, 07:27 PM BUT, I ask again, will ILL continue to run on NAN after it launches on TV Land? Does anyone have any information on that?
dawsongirl 06-24-2001, 01:29 AM You know, if TV Land and Nick were smart (which is very debateable if you ask me http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/wink.gif ), then they would air it on both. If All in the Family can be on 2, then so can Lucy.
Sean Snow 06-30-2001, 08:28 PM Don't any of your local networks air ILL? I get TVLand and Nick, and on my local station they air it.
Marta 06-30-2001, 11:02 PM yeah, where I live(Hamburg, NY) NBC shows ILL every week day at 11 am and 1130am, so I'm thankful for that!!

dawsongirl 07-01-2001, 12:49 AM I have a dish and get WSBK out of Boston, and they show it at 10am (9 central). But it is really cut up!
Marta 07-02-2001, 10:05 AM On tv land, I just saw that commercial with Mr. T and Tony Randal, and in their little song that they sang, it says that ILL is coming in the fall, so it's official! I'm so excited!!!!
-marta
Sean Snow 07-02-2001, 10:38 AM I loved that commercial! Anyway, my UPN station aires I Love Lucy, right after The Jeffersons, Benson, Bewitched, and I Dream of Jeannie.

Terry Ross 08-18-2001, 07:37 PM I absolutely want to come to the pity party.
I can't figure out Nick At Nite. They take ILL off of Monday nights, put in lousy Gilligan, and then schedule her at the most inconvenient time of the night: 3:00AM. The ratings do not justify this. I hope ILL blows the ratings lid off of TV Land and Nick at Nite looks incompetant {which they are} for letting this show go to their little sister network.

I've read that they want N@N to be the 80s
network; congratulations, N@N.You are the only entity that wants to identify itself with the 1980's...
Are the ratings for N@N that bad? I wonder what the ratings for Lucy Monday's were? Terry, can you find that out?

They are better then ever. I like all their shows! Nick is the Most Watched Basic Cable Channel. From what I hear, N@N had a hard time letting go "I Love Lucy", but they are now the 80s and 70s Super Station.
Betsyp 08-19-2001, 06:03 PM Sean, I might have believed that N@N was torn about dumping ILL, but while it is still on N@N, they've treated ILL and the fans, shabbily.
It's never going to be on N@N again. Couldn't they AT LEAST have finished up Lucy Mondays? Can't they put it on at a normal time?
No, to me N@N is made up of hyporcites. I'm just thankful that I was able to tape all of the episodes before the purge......

Terry Ross 08-22-2001, 12:38 PM Ok everyone, listen up. I just looked at the ratings for Nick-at-Nite in July by night of week. No one is going to like this but Lucy Monday was the lowest. But "Andy Griffith" was one-tenth away from "Lucy" so why is that still on? And "Three's Company", "The Brady Bunch", and "Different Strokes" were only a little bit higher. I can't cite the specific numbers on-line due to legal issues with Nielsen Media Research.
Like we have all said, the executives at Nick-at-Nite are morons!
By the way, "Rugrats" is Nick's top rated show.
By the way, very clever, dawsongirl.
Betsyp 08-22-2001, 01:47 PM Thanks, Terry.
Well, N@N has weeded ILL out from their schedule, and now they are weeding out the people who appreciate great tv. They've got what they want: teenagers and their yuppie parents watching shows that no one will remember in 50 years.
Czas na Zywiec 08-22-2001, 04:21 PM I used to get N@N back in Chicago, but now i live in Colorado.Jan 2001 I own and live in a Hotel (like in Golden palace http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/crazy.gif )And In our town we dont get Nick or N@N, but in the next towns over they do, so its not like i can watch N@N anyway but my question is did they take off Wonder Years from N@N because i watch it now on TNN. And this is off the topic, but when did they start showing MadTV and Hangin with Mr. Cooper on TNN? My world is just turned all upside down! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/eek.gif But anyway i gotta run. BYE! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/wave.gif
dawsongirl 08-22-2001, 04:59 PM Rugrats? Oh yeah, that's just about the coolest show ever. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif If some cartoon is the most popular, then why don't they just turn into a cartoon channel? Oh wait, Cartoon Network beat them to it and do a much better job. Anyway, Wonder Years left N@N a while ago, and will soon leave TNN for Fox Family. HWMC started about a month ago I think.
Thanks for all this cool TV info Terry. What would we do without you? http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif

Go figure the viewing tastes of America!

I do have to say something. I think Nick at Nite wanted GI on all the time, but due to the lack of episodes to make a lot of themes, they decided to replace one of the nites leter on.
