When did they add the heart to the opening? I remember reading that during the orginal run Desi and Lucy were climbing on packs of Phillip Morris ciggerates.

I may be wrong but I think it was the beginning of the second season.

The heart is a result of syndication. When it went into syndication, it was no longer sponsored by Phillip Morris, so the Phillip Morris opening was gone.

The opening consisted on stick figure Lucy and Ricky riding up an elevator to the top of a building (if I remember right). They promoted PM cigarettes all the way through. There's a website that has the opening you can watch. I'll post the address later.

Yeah, I have ABC airings of Bewitched, and Samantha hands Darrin a box of Life cereal. They promoted it all the way through.

This is one of the many cartoon scenarios used at the beginning of the original I Love Lucy episodes. Each week, cartoon Lucy and Ricky would be in different situations, putting up billboards, or playing with matches as big as them, or walking a dog, or driving a car, or riding in a hot air balloon, etc., and end up promoting their sponsor. You get the idea. There was a different original opening for each original syndicated episode, so somewhere out there are 179 different cartoon openings!

You can also see the Lucy heart on the satin background, which we are familiar with in the beginning of current syndicated I Love Lucy episodes, in the opening sequence of "Forever Darling".

CBS aired all of Lucille Ball's sitcoms except her last one. I Love Lucy originally aired from 1951 to 1957, The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show aired from 1957 to 1960, The Lucy Show from 1962 to 1968, and Here's Lucy from 1968 to 1974. ABC aired her last sitcom called Life With Lucy in 1986.

They used ABC instead of CBS because Aaron Spelling's shows were usually on ABC, and teh way CBS treated Lucy at the end of Here's Lucy, i'm glad she didn't go back to them, her luck at NBC wasn't much better, with the ONE special!
