NEW YORK (Variety) - Warner Bros. has set Halle Berry to play the felonious feline in "Catwoman," which French filmmaker Pitof ("Vidocq") will direct later this year.
Berry has already shown her action chops since her Oscar-winning performance in "Monster's Ball." She played James Bond's sexy partner Jinx in "Die Another Day" and reprised the superhero character Storm in "X2," the "X-Men" sequel due out May 2 from 20th Century Fox.
She's about to star in the Joel Silver-produced Warner Bros. film "Gothika" alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Penelope Cruz.
"Catwoman" has been considered a dream project for actresses since Michelle Pfeiffer originated the sexy but loopy character in the Tim Burton-directed "Batman Returns." That pair tried a spinoff that stalled. Warner revived it and attached Ashley Judd, who left to do a play.
The studio has been sweet on Berry for the job for the past two weeks. A preliminary meeting was held Thursday between Warner brass and her agents and manager.
While no deal has been made, Berry is expected to get her claws into the part quickly. She'd be the second black woman to play Catwoman, as Eartha Kitt did in the 1960s "Batman" TV series.
The film was scripted by John Rogers and rewritten by Mike Ferris and John Brancato.

Warner Brothers has set Oscar winner Halle Berry to play the title role in the upcoming Catwoman film for French director Pitof later this year, Variety reported. Berry won the Academy Award for best actress for Monster's Ball and will reprise the role of Storm in the upcoming X-Men sequel, X2, which opens May 2.
In Catwoman, Berry steps in for Ashley Judd, who was long attached to the movie, but left to do a play, the trade paper reported. No deal has been made, but Berry is expected to sign on soon. Berry would be the second black woman to play Catwoman, after Eartha Kitt in the 1960s TV series Batman.
Catwoman was written by John Rogers and rewritten by Mike Ferris and John Brancato. Denise Di Novi is producing, the trade paper reported.
Berry is also set to star in the Joel Silver-produced WB supernatural film Gothika, with Robert Downey Jr. and Penelope Cruz, the trade paper reported

As long as Joel Shumacher isn't attached to the project, I'm happy.
:)

He's the one that really screwed them up. Batman and Robin, oh man, what a screwed up movie. I find it kind of weird that if you spend a lot of money making a movie, and the movie bombs. That money just went down the toilet. I guess that kind of applies to a lot of big spender movies. They spend such and such amount for all these special effects and it still sucked.
My one question about the whole project is this:
Since Catwoman was spawned from the Batman universe, is the Caped Crusader going to be in this film at all, or will it feature Catwoman in Gotham City with absolutly no mention of him?
Personally, I do not think Catwoman could carry a flick on ther own.

That's an interesting question. They might have to move her out of Gotham. If they leave her in Gotham and she's doing stuff, Batman has to be somewhere. If not Batman, it has to be some sort of crime fighter.
I must admit that I still have my doubts on Halle. The girl is very pretty, I will admit that. I just can't imagine her as Catwoman though. I know Halle is quite bankable in Hollywood right now and I really can't think of another actress that could be Catwoman in the movie. Then again, I can't think of that many now actresses either. Hmm, who oozes in sexiness and is still a good actress? I might have to think about this one for awhile.
Better yet, if they do have a Batman and Robin, who's gonna play them? Chris O' Donnell might have a little Robin left. I can't think of an actor to play Batman. I don't want Clooney back. I like George on FOL, but he was an okay Batman. He wasn't that bad, but he wasn't that great. We might have to go with an unknown actor for the Batman role.
Why not bring back Michele Pfieffer?
She was awsome in the role.
Besides, she cold use a hit movie...

She was great in Batman Returns, I think she should be playing Catwoman, not Halle Berry.
DarleneIllyria 04-17-2003, 01:28 AM Just found another article that will clear up the Batman question.
Pitof Talks Catwoman
Director Pitof, who is helming the upcoming Catwoman movie, told French magazine Allocine that the Halle Berry movie will have little to do with previous incarnations of the DC Comics character, according to a translation posted on the Superhero Hype Web site. "It's always difficult when you have such an icon or symbol, but everything is going to be different," he said.
Pitof added, "There will be no direct link with Batman, nor will there be Batman-esque imagery, and it won't be set in Gotham City. The story will be different, and the costume will be different. We aren't keeping anything from Catwoman except the original idea: the character. The idea is to begin her story from scratch, and possibly begin a franchise."
Pitof said that the movie is still in development. "We have Halle Berry interested in starring," he said. "Things are moving ahead, but I really can't tell you much more. The script isn't finished yet, and things are still a bit crazy. We hope to start filming in fall 2003 for a summer 2004 opening at least."
