View Full Version : TV Land Awards...Dissapointing...
ILoveLucyJG 03-13-2003, 09:28 PM I don't know about anyone else, but I was very dissapointed and surprised that they payed so little attention to I Love Lucy. It won the award for best food fight? Are they kidding! I Love Lucy is much to good to just get an award for best food fight. When they announced that I Love Lucy won the award, It was really really sad that no one was there to accept the award. It was like noone cared. It was very embarassing. I Love Lucy deserved much more attention than it got. Mybe its me, but I found it to be very bothersome...
What do you guys think?
SPLAIN 03-14-2003, 12:15 PM Totally agree, maybe next year. Besides there are too many awards shows on anyway, enough already. It was nice to see some of those people we grew up with though. And Lucy fought to get the Van Dyke show kept on the air when they wanted to cancel it at the beginning and she considered it one of her all time top ten shows.

I didn't think it was even necessary for them to announce an award, if none of the cast members were going to be there to except the award, and I feel that TV Land knew that, atleast I Love Lucy recieved credit and for even mentioning a award. I think it would have been best to donate the award to the museum of television and radio, or an organization.
SPLAIN 03-14-2003, 02:22 PM Well, i can see where the kids wouldn't bother with an award like that, God, even Lucy herself didn't bother when she was given a life achievement award along with Midler and Tomlin and a couple of others in '87, she knew the Comedy awards probably wouldn't last and she was right, it was a tacky show, so she didn't even go, and this one was very similar, they're really scraping the bottom of the barrel with these awards shows nowadays, ALTHOUGH, IT WAS NICE SEING SOME OF THE PEOPLE THERE AND PARTS OF THE SHOW WERE OK, as much as i was not happy with the Lucy slight and HATED seing people i LOVED like Bea Arthur and Rose Marie and Don Adams looking like death warmed over, we still grew up with the se people and LOVE them still, kinda gives you an idea why Lucy stayed in the house at the end, they don't want to dissillusion their fans.
ilovelucy15 03-14-2003, 05:36 PM It would have been nice if her kids came to accept the award, or writers!

Yeah, I felt the same way. It was cool seeing all these people all over again, but it broke my heart to see James Doohan at the awards. James was Scotty on the original Star Trek show. He just looked rough. He must really love the fans. He showed up in his condition.

I think it's mainly just old age. I think he has heart problems too.
Pitooey 03-15-2003, 10:03 AM Personally.......... The Lucy Show is the best comedy Show of all time. So I would've given them this award. Plain & Simple...........
I would've definitely started the show off with this.................
There are so many Black/White shows that were omitted.
:(
Barnabas1 03-15-2003, 11:01 AM I agree, Pitooney. TLS needs more recognition than it gets. :(
vze3t9q9 03-15-2003, 10:11 PM I personally thought the category of Best Food fight was foolish. A classy show (I love Lucy) having that silly category. I was saddened that Best sidekick, I think that was the title award didn't win with Ethel Mertz. But I tend to think the winners had to be alive and in the audence. I'm glad Don Knotts received it. He said lovely things about Andy. Getting back to the food fight award I expected maybe one of the writers accepting or even better would be one of the little rickys all grown up coming on stage. I tend to think some of the classy stars thought the show wasn't too great to appear on. For tvlands first award show, I'll give it a C.

I agree about the best sidekick thing. I wanted Vivian Vance to win so bad and thought she really deserved it, but I also thought that she didn't win because she isn't with us anymore. I hope that's not true but that's what it seemed like to me.
LucyFan 03-16-2003, 03:06 AM I have just seen the TV Land Awards Show like five minutes ago and I am disturbed that Lucy and her cast(s) hardly got any recognition. I feel bad because it seemed like people really did not care for the many achievements Lucille made within her life as well as her cast members. And when the Diff'rent Strokes cast presented the award and said like "no one is here to accept it" . . . that just got me really disturbed and upset. I was about in tears. They should have had one of Lucy's writers or children to accept the award for her. Then there was the sidekick award. I honestly felt Vivian Vance was the most-deserving actor to get the award but if it couldn't have been her, then I am glad it was Don who got it.
But the thing that got me disturbed the most was that Lucille's second weekly series, The Lucy Show, was not even mentioned in TV Land's Award show. That to me is a disgrace to Lucille AND Gale. Both actors worked very hard on making each episode come out great and to witness later on that no credit is being given to neither one of them (especially Gale) is automatic slap-in-the-face. I feel very bad for Gale because from what I am aware of he hasn't won an award yet and it comes acrossed like people really don't care about him or the work he has done in television and with Lucy. He's one of the most underrated actors of television, if not the underrated one. :( :(

Well, I would agree but it hardly gets recognition in the first place. But here's what I say: The Lucy Show deserves the recogniton.

Barnabas1 03-16-2003, 10:34 AM Nothing can top ILL, though!
vze3t9q9 03-16-2003, 09:15 PM When I first heard about the Tvland awards I assumed it would be about shows that are shown or have been shown on Tvland or Nick at Nite. SHows that fit in the mold of black and white 50's tv to shows to the mid 70's. I can't get over the non traditional family award going to the Golden Girls. My Three Sons could have won that category. If it had, 3 stars of the show could have accepted. Golden girls only went off the air 10 =15 years. THat show could be used in the tvaward show of the the yr 2020. It sad many stars of the early years have past away. but that life.
Oh to change networks for a while. I watch Goodlife TV where many other oldies are shown. Posters you may want to switch channels and view that network.

That was an other thing, Vivian definitly deserved that award! Everyone in america would agree that she was the best sidekick of all time. TV Land really needs to look in to who they are going to pick to win awards next year. What about that big
tribute they payed to I Love Lucy for there 50th? At the awards, they basically ignored the show..... Goes to show that the 50th anniversary was just for ratings...

I was almost in tears too..:(
Pitooey 03-16-2003, 11:48 PM Hopefully next year the voting group will realize that Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Vivien and many of the other cast members will get their recognition.
Dead or Alive.....
They all deserve it. Even the writers, producers and some of the guests that popped in should get recognized.
SPLAIN 03-17-2003, 10:45 AM I read somewhere that you won if you were alive and didn't win if you were dead, that about sums it up.
Sean Snow 03-17-2003, 03:24 PM Well most of the awards were chosen by voting online [except for the big ones] so that's just how people who were voting online felt *shrug*. Maybe next year ILL will win more awards.
SPLAIN 03-18-2003, 11:39 AM Thanks for mentionning that, because when i heard that you had to be alive to win, i knew that couldn't be as voting was done by fans online and as ILL has more fans than any other show, that made no sense, so your comment clears it up.
Tweety 03-30-2003, 10:29 PM I believe that it was true that they weren't going to give out awards to people that are no longer with us...
That "best working stiff" award (or whatever they called it...the one that went to Laverne and Shirley) absolutely should have gone to Ralph Kramden, but it was obvious that they were only going to give the awards to people that were alive and who showed up...
I know they called it the "First ANNUAL" TV Land Awards, but are they really going to do this again next year...maybe they'll come up with new categories, I don't know...but I thought the awards show this year was really, really bad...I said on a post for another show (All in the Family, I think) that Dick Van Dyke appeared to be the ONLY performer there who still maintains ANY kind of performance standards...I thought he did a good job in his quartet number...but I thought everyone else was absolutely pathetic!! Shirley Jones and David Cassidy...what happened, Shirley, you used to be able to sing!!! And poor Barbara Eden...probably (at least in my opinion) the most beautiful woman ever to star in a sitcom...the Jeannie thing was just sooooo bad....how embarrassing...but par for the course for that show...and yeah, the dancers were beautiful and all, but it looked like they just got a bunch of Carnival Cruise rejects together and said "hey girls, how'd you like to be on TV?"
Anyway, needless to say, I won't be watching the SECOND annual TV Land awards show...the way ILL was ignored (only because the cast members are deceased) was a disgrace...
Here's to "I Love Lucy" the greatest TV show (sitcom or otherwise) of all time...Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel were definitely the "Beatles" of TV Land...
SPLAIN 03-31-2003, 10:53 AM Thanks for saying that, i LOVE Shirley, but she did sound bad, maybe it was to accomodate David and it wasn't in her key? She still looks good though, and yes, you're right Van Dyke was the best one there, no wonder Lucy LOVED him and Mary.

I think you made a good point...I'm sure that was not a good key for Shirley to sing...much too low for her range...and yes, she does still look great
And man, what a pro Dick Van Dyke is...and Mary Tyler Moore...Lucy did indeed show impeccable taste by naming those two and the DVD show as among her very favorites of all time
SPLAIN 04-01-2003, 10:52 AM Yes Lucy had them in her all time TOP TEN TV Shows, and she also fought with CBS to KEEP the show on the air when it was struggling at the beginning, of course, she had incentive to do that, it was renting space at her studio. On the day she died, CBS did a nighttime special with Van Dyke paying tribute to her and he mentionned that Lucy had said upon meeting him and Mary that she LOVED their work, and he took that as very high praise indeed!
