I just watched the Fish episode and I have a question. Did anyone notice that when Barney indroduced Dietrich to everyone. He didn't introduce him to Chano. It seemed that he was in the squad room at the time. Or is this just some more wonderful TVLand editing? Like perhaps the unedited episode shows him leaving before Dietrich gets there. Anyone know?

I didn't notice it, but I'll bet you're right--that it's TV Land's creative editing at work. Gotta get more commercials in...grrrr.

TV Land did edit the episode as always, but even in the unedited one, there is no interaction between Chano and Dietrich. Chano was in the room when Dietrich arrived. I don't remember when, but I don't think it's the first time something like this has been done. Before the episode started, they said in the little blurb preceding the episode that this was treated as a pilot for a separate Fish show, and that Dietrich, as Fish's partner, would have been featured in that Fish spinoff mostly. Of course they didn't do the Fish spinoff until about a year after that, and it was a different premise.

As far as I know, this was the only time when Chano and Dietrich were in the squadroom at the same time while being detectives.

The producers of the show really lucked out with Steve Landesberg. I tell my younger sister, who is a big "Friends" fan, to imagine say, Phoebe and Joey or Chandler leaving the show after the second or third season, only one "new" friend being brought in, and the show getting even better after that. That's what happened to "Barney Miller" essentially. Barney Miller was a pretty remarkable and rare thing.

I've seen both the cut version and the entire episode now, thanks to DVD. Chano had left the room before Dietrich came in. It's the little things that count so much!!! ;)
