with some talk on the board about the feud, it made me think. I knew the two didn't get along. And someone mentioned they rarely touched. To me, it seems that they touched kinda frequently, but whenever the "boys and girls" made up, lucy and ricky would always kiss, and fred and ethel would hug. I always assumed that the two put their fighting aside when it came to acting (their job), but maybe had some clause saying they never had to kiss. ALSO: I wondered if the feud was ever somewhat resolved. Maybe since Bill Frawley died first, do you think Viv attended his funeral? Because didn't someone say they hated each other it seemed, but if one was in trouble, the other would go cross country to help.

Resolved; nah. People would stop Viv on the street sometimes after Bill died and ask her where Fred was. She's tell them he died. She didn't like him even in death.

The feud was never resovled. When Vivian Vance heard the news that he had died, she was at a resteruant and toasted the fact that he was gone.

Wow! I'm surprised Viv actually toasted Bill'
s death. They must have really, really, REALLY disliked each other!

That's terrible! I've lost some respect for Mrs. Vance.

Where did you hear that she toasted his death? I find that hard to believe! Maybe she wouldn't kiss him but be happy over his death? Come on.....

I have read that in several Lucy books, and remember reading a referance to the toast in Vivian Vance's bio. It does seem hard to belive that she would do such a thing. I am not saying that it is true or false; it is just something that I have read.

Well, I guess we'll never know the true story of this hatred. I know she was repulsed . . . and yes, they hugged when the script called for it but from what I understand, she refused to kiss him or appear in bed with him . . . although their first stop to California had them in bed in that run-down shack. But notice how far apart they are?

Would you get in bed with that man????

Ruth Knickerbocker would. :) If you notice in "Equal Rights" the Mertzes go to kiss each other but their lips don't touch.

Well, they wouldn't have been able to appear in bed together anyway. Remember, Lucy and Desi had to use separate beds on the show even though the audience knew that they were married in real life! Even when there was a scene where it looked like they were in the same bed, you'll notice that it was two beds pushed together (with the exception of the "First Stop" episode). But didn't Fred and Ethel kiss in the Christmas special? I may be wrong.

I couldn't believe that Viv would actaully toast Bill's death, but I looked it up in her biography and she did say, "Champagne for everyone!" when she heard the news. But around this time she did drink heavily so maybe she was already a bit drunk...I don't know, I guess I just can't imagine hating anyone that much. I still greatly respect Vivian though and she will always be one of my favorite actresses.

If this is true, then I guess the old adage, what goes around comes around rings true.
I'm sure her dying of cancer years after Bill's death was no picnic for her.
Don't get me wrong--I feel bad she died. I just think that celebrating another person's death gets the bad karma going. :(
