View Full Version : Funniest Episode(s)
Kristen 03-11-2003, 02:10 PM I've put a new spin on the old "favorite episode" discussion we've done a million times already. What do you guys think are the funniest episodes of TMTMS? The ones that really made you laugh! I'm not going to mention any of mine, to avoid stealing anybody's answer.

Two Wrongs Don't Make a Writer
One of my all-time favorites! I used to have Ted's re-write of Mary's story memorized. Now I'm gonna sit here and see if I can remember it.
Crimson and Clover 08-24-2003, 01:16 AM "Chuckles Bites the Dust" That episode was great.

I agree that was a great episode, but it's just not one of my favorites. I suppose it's because it's everyone's favorite episode.

I agree. I think there are other episodes of TMTMS that are just as good as "Chuckles," such as "Mary's Insomnia" among others.

Mary's Insomnia! OMG! I can't believe I forgot about that one.
Ted (pointing to Mary's toliet): Is that the only seat you got in here?

Who could forget "Don't you dare!"? That whole bathtub scene has got to be one of the funniest things ever!
RichFonz 11-10-2003, 09:21 PM For funny MTM episodes: I have plenty.
#67-Romeo and Mary (When Mary was handcuffed by Warren, that was hilarious.)
#119-Ted Baxter's Famous Broadcaster's School ('We have no gym, and we have no pool, but we have a heart here at TBFBS.')
#127-Chuckles Bites The Dust (The funeral scene)
#154-Mary's Insomnia (The bathroom scene sends chills up my eyes.)
#81-The Dinner Party (Where Ted ruins another of Mary's parties.) Note: Henry Winkler (Fonzie) appears as Rhoda's date.
#1- Love Is All Around (Lou: You got spunk. I HATE spunk!!)

I crack up everytime I see that episode. What a classic!
I should dig out my Mary tapes and watch 'Mary's Insomnia' and 'Angels In the Snow' again! :D Yay, I wuv Mary again!
That reminds me. Last night I was watching the last episode of The Golden Girls, where Dorothy and Lucas tie the knot. Anyway, after they exchange vows I kept expecting to hear Betty sing out 'la la la' like she did on 'Ted's Wedding.' :rotflmao:
GrandGame1440 02-13-2004, 04:31 PM "Chuckles," "Put on a Happy Face," &...call me CRAZY!! But, "Mary's Three Husbands."

Call me CRAZY!! But, "Mary's Three Husbands."
OK, you're crazy. (Happy now?)
BTW, in that episode, I love how Ted's wearing a T-shirt -- on the front of it's a picture of his face; on the back is a picture of...the back of his head!
Also, during Lou's fantasy, I like Ted's broadcast (at 80+ years old) where he forgets his name: "This is...this is, uh...(pulls out wallet, looks inside)...Genuine Cowhide."
The one where Ted, Lou, and Murray go in to Lou's office and all picture what it would be like being married to Mary. Lol @ Lou's  .
I liked that one too, it was really funny. Also the one where Mary has the bad
cold and has to go to an awards show and eveything goes wrong for her, is
pretty funny too.
Mrs. Roper 03-21-2007, 11:01 AM I have only seen season's 1 thru 4, and so far, the funniest episode by far is, Ted Baxter Meets Walter Cronkite!!! I LOVE Ted’s acceptance speech when he wins that Teddy!!
catlover79 03-30-2007, 12:09 AM Today I Am A Ma'am. I howled through that one. I've known a few Howard Arnells in my time...scary.
Joe Rockhead 04-03-2007, 12:11 PM My favorite moment in the Chuckles episode is when Lou & Murray are in Lou's office:
L:"It's lucky that elephant didn't go after somebody else."
M: "That's right. After all, you know how hard it is to stop after just one peanut."
Was the laughter REAL? Watching them crack up gets me everytime.
OKCRay 04-08-2007, 03:56 AM There are many that I love a lot. One that is usually overlooked (although TVgen62 mentions it on page 1 of the thread) is "I Was a Single for WJM" (the final episode from season 4). This was one of several "The Show Must Go On" episodes (where everyone presses on despite hilariously embarrassing circumstances), and watching them trying to get through their remote broadcast at a singles bar after the cameras scared all the customers away was fantastic. A brilliant setup was how Murray tried to back out of participating in the feature so he would not upset Marie. As the story airs, watch Murray's deer-in-the-headlights facial expression as the camera zooms in on him standing at the bar    . He then tries to deflect the attention to Mary. After a couple of questions Ted asks Mary, "how did you find out about this place?" She then sends it right back Murray's way and says, "he told me" (prompting Murray to want to crawl under the bar). Mary then gets Lou involved in the presentation and he wings an honest and thoughtful assessment of the situation. As he wraps up, the cameraman advises they still have four minutes of airtime to fill. Lou then throws it back to the newsroom, where a panic-stricken Ted announces four minutes of silence to observe the final day of the auto show in Minneapolis.
catlover79 04-28-2007, 05:27 PM "Put On A Happy Face" was hilarious, and showed that even Mary Richards can have a day where everything goes wrong. The sight of Rhoda just trying not to gloat was hysterical.
"The Snow Must Go On", "The Five-Minute Dress", "Lou's First Date", and "It's Whether You Win Or Lose" (the Hideko Sawakaki moment is priceless!) have all cracked me up countless times. But when I recently saw this episode again, I have to say this was my most laugh out loud MTM moment. It came in the first season ep, "Toulouse-Lautrec Is One of My Favorite Artists". Mary is dating a man who is, ahem, shorter than she. She introduces him to Rhoda and makes a BIG gaffe:
Mary: Eric, I'd like you to meet my friend, Rhoda Morgenstern; Rhoda, this is Eric Shrimp.
The studio audience howled for about 2 minutes, and I was howling right along with them!! CLASSIC!!
Kristen 04-28-2007, 11:59 PM Yes, I love the "Eric shrimp" line, too. The look on Mary's face is priceless. It's like, "Oh, God, did I just say that?!" "Put on a Happy Face" has always been one of my favorties, too. The hair bump thing is classic.
There are just so many classic moments in this show, you could prob. go on all day, hehe.

OH Nuts! 08-27-2007, 06:49 AM (also A MTM Q.) There are many MTM eps I've loved, but my favorite & funniest is the one where Mary finds out she's making $50 less than the guy who had the job before her. I also remember in this ep Gordy and Ted are teamed to do a show together. Ted doesn't realize he's the second fiddle ("straight man") until someone spills the beans. Then Ted tries to be funny and starts saying one stupid thing after another (really unusual for Ted, right). BUT THIS TIME HE'S REALLY STUPID! AND IT'S ON THE AIR! Mary gets more and more exasperated and finally turns to him and says (something like) Ted will you please shut up. It was the funniest ep for me, because you never hear Mary say anything like that. What was the name of the ep? & what season? The Lars Affair was probably my second favorite, cause Sue Ann and Mary are fierce in it. Also, if I remember correctly, that's first time Sue Ann appears on MTM.

It was episide #49, Season 3 opener, The Good-Time News. That was a funny episode and that season the show was beginning to take off. Mary was beginning to learn to stand up for herself in that episode. I loved it when she did not back down from Lou. It was funny to see him run from the confrontation of this episode on giving Mary the same pay that her predecessor had who was a male.
The Lars Affair was a great one and the best comedy that was shown with MTM, Valerie Harper and Cloris Leachman. Anytime those three women got together we was going to see some good comedy between them. Too bad more storylines could had been centered around them.

Playing Eric was veteran character Hamilton Camp. He also played memorable guest roles on Bewitched (along with Steve Franken, he played one of the dog-aliens) and WKRP (he played Del Murdoch the stereo guy in the ill-fated studio shop remote). I read where he was only 5'2, was also a singer/songwriter, was married for 40 years and had 6 children. He passed away in 2005. God bless him. :rip:

I never knew where in the series it fell, and I'm delighted its Season 3 as I have that DVD set. (Been very busy w work so haven't had a chance to watch S#3 closely otherwise I should have spotted it.)
It's nice posters like you who make SO such a great place....you don't know something there's always a more knowledgeable fan who does and graciouslly shares it with you. Thanks again!!

Ohio8 10-13-2007, 11:06 PM I'm sure there's more but one can think of off hand is "Chuckles bites the dust".
Sample of the quotes:
Lou: "My anchorman isn't marching down the street with a chimp. It tends to give him an undignified image." Ted: "Lou, please! It won't gove me an undignified image." Lou: "I was talking about the chimp."
(Chucklees the Clown marches in the parade. That night, a stricken Lou enters the newsroom.) Lou: "Chuckles...Chuckles the Clown is dead. It was a freak accident. He went to the aprade dressed as Peter Peanut -- and a rogue elephant tried to shell him." Ted: "Stop trying to cheer me up, Lou. I mean, it's funny, but it's in bad taste."
(A day later): Lou: "Lucky more people weren't hurt. Lucky that elephant didn't go after anybody else." Murray: "That's right. After all, you know how hard it is to stop after just one peanut..." Mary objects. Lou comes out of his office, laughing at one of Murray's jokes. "Can't you imagine the insurance claim: 'Cause of death: a busted goober'."
Murray and Sue Ann talk. Lou: "After all, the guy died wearing a peanut suit, killed by an elephant." Murray: "Yeah -- born in a trunk, died in a trunk."
