Archie Bumker's Place and Sanford are not spinoffs just new versions of All in the Family and Sanford and Son. The reason is both Archie Bunker and Fred were in these shows so how can we call it a spinoff? ABP was just a 80's version of All in the Family and Sanford was a 80's version of Sanford and Son. Now the show Gloria is a spinoff, and Sanford Arms since the supporting characters were given their own show. But ABP and Sanford are just NEW VERSIONS. Anyone agree?

I agree. That's how I feel about Mayberry R.F.D. It's the same cast minus Andy Griffith. A continuation of the town of Mayberry. And Andy visited from time to time.

Continuation is a much better word to describe Archie Bunker's Place. I'm so tired of hearing that ABP was a spinoff. Sanford on the other hand wasn't a continuation because it started 3 years later. So a better way to describe Sanford was calling it a newer version of the original show-Sanford and Son.

Once again, we agree on something, LOL. I totally believe myself. Although Fred Rubin the writer for ABP says that it is a spinoff. I just believe that it is a continuation. CBS sure did treat it that way. When "Archie Alone" was scheduled to air back in 1980, it slated as an 11th season opener.

3 If You Count Gloria. Technically it was an ABP Spinoff, But it still is kind of an AITF Spinoff.

Yeah, I discussed this on another thread I started. I mentioned that AITF technically only had two spinoffs [if you don't view ABP as a spinoff of AITF or Gloria.] Based on what the dictionary says about spinoffs and how I generally feel about them, I don't think ABP is a spinoff either.

Now, about "Gloria." The dictionary says a spinoff is "a secondary benefit, product, development ect., as a television series built around a character in an earlier series." If you want to even look at that definition and pick it apart, you could say Gloria wasn't really a character of ABP because she just guest appeared on it. Is that enough to regard "Gloria" as a spin off of ABP, or is AITF more appropriate because she was truly a character on it?

And wait, since ABP is a continuation of AITF, does that mean you could call "Gloria" a spinoff of both?

Gloria is a spinoff of ABP because a storyline involving Gloria and Joey started on ABP which eventually led to her own show. So I would say Gloria is a spinoff of ABP instead of AITF.
