I think you're talking about 'Maude', an early-70s show which had Ester Rolle who would end up on 'Good Times'. Don't know much more about the show. I saw the end of one episode just recently and Conrad Bain was in it and I think he was a 'Mr. Drummond'. Can anyone else take over from here?

I think your mistaken vidking. Conrad Bain had only appeared on one other sitcom (Maude) before he got Diff'rent Strokes.

Diff'rent Strokes was a completely unique idea, that's what it made it so popular at its' start.
