View Full Version : This was a Stupid Crossover Attempt with the show Step by Step
TVFactFan 03-08-2003, 12:38 PM Back in 1991, Family matters and Step by Step were part of the Friday Night lineup at 8pm and 8;30pm. When Family Matters ended, Steve Urkel shoots straight up in the air through the roof of the Winslow home, and landed in the backyard of the Step by Step family. My question was how could Urkel land in their backyard if Step by Step wasn't based in Chicago? This has to go down as one of the stupidest crossover attempts in TV sitcom History. I couldn't believe that Urkel actually was part of the Step by Step storyline at 8;30pm just from landing in their yard. Anyone else consider this a Wacky crossover?
Cashodeen 03-16-2003, 04:30 AM I can't think of a worse crossover episode actually. There probably is one, but this crossover is definitely up there. What's worse, this was Step By Step's second episode. I think it is so wrong for a show that is new to have a "big star" appear on it.

I guess that was there way of bringing viewers to Step by Step with Urkel as a guest star. But they just forgot that Step by Step was based in Wisconsin.

No doubt. If you were the kind of person to watch FM, you were the kind of person to watch Step by Step, and having Urkel on the new TGIF show could do nothing but help it out. I remember watching it when it first appeared and I thought it was a tacky crossover. But hey, this is TGIF we're talking about here!
I don't even remember the FM episode where Steve blasts off at the end, but having him shoot from Chicago to Wisconsin is verrrry weak. But again, it's TGIF!

I can't remember the episode either but what I do remember is Urkel wearing a space outfit inside the Winslow's living room and shot up in the air through the Winslows roof. I seen that episode about 5 months ago on TBS and of course in syndication once he flies through the roof that's the end.
Maybe you're right though...
Anyway, the FM episode you were talking about (the 'first part' of the crossover) is called "Brain Over Brawn" (3rd season).

Geography lesson for the day:
Chicago is not all that far from Wisconsin. SBS was based in the real-life city of Port Washington, the county seat of Ozaukee County. It is directly north of Milwaukee on Interstate 43. The distance Steve travelled was about 100 or so miles. It's a lot more realistic compared to taking off in Chicago and landing in, say, California.

Step by Step was still based in a different state.LOL So what you just said means nothing.
Cashodeen 03-23-2003, 08:46 PM I didn't need a geography lesson. 100 miles is still damn far. But yes, Chicago to Cali would have been even more hokey. (Still say, worse crossover ever.)

thank you Cashodeen-LOL. Still wacky even though Chicago is not far from Wisconsin.

There's nothing wrong with that. It doesn't matter. 100 miles is not so bad. Besides, Steve and Mark were partners. It's TV. Sometimes we have to use our imaginations or go with the flow.

Maybe so thomas, but it still goes down as the strangest crossover in sitcom history-LOL

Granted. I agree, TV usually doesn't have to be realistic to be entertaining. But you have to admit, it does make for interesting conversation on here.

I, personally was glad to see the crossover. There have been stranger crossovers as well.

Well i always been a fan of crossovers so i didn't mind it at all. I just felt it could have made a little more sense. Steve Ukel appeared on Full House too but i never saw that one to know if it made sense.

On that ep, he was visiting his cousin Julie, one of D.J's friends. Suprisingly, she was a normal girl and not nerdy. She was probably adopted or they must be related by marriage. LOL.

Well in order for that crossover to make sense, the cousin would have had to appear on Family Matters as Steve Urkel's Cousin. Guess What? The only cousin steve had on family matters was hisself, cousin myrtle-LOL. Which means Urkel was probably appeared on Full House to boost the show's ratings.

Wow, wasn't that Myrtle Urkel a potential beauty queen? LOL. Anyways, yes... I agree, about the boost ratings deal. Urkel mania was fierce. Anyone remember those Urkel dolls? LOL, I never had one, but we bought my cousin one. "Did I do that?" Anyways, I am totally off track. When a cross over looks like a blantant attmept for a rating's booster, it perturbs me a tad. It perturbed me then and I was like 8. But I've been raging on Steve enough lately. I was tuning in every week just like everyone else (or many anyhoo), and I wanted to go on America's Funniest People and do my best "Urkel impersonation."
LOL, waaaay, too much info there.
Superbatboy 03-30-2003, 09:39 PM I remember when that aired. But I was too young to know how bad of a crossover that was.

I think i was 16 when that episode aired and was trying to figure out when was that fool Urkel going to land when he shot through the Winslows roof.
Remember the infamous "Salem swallowing the little time ball" schedule from "Sabrina the Teenage Witch"? It went from Sabrina, to Boy Meets World, to "You Wish" and all that. Now that was strange and cool, considering that all of the shows are now or since been canned.

I'm trying to remember that one, but maybe I never saw it. Was it one of those episodes where BMW (just realized that show abbriviated takes the name of the car. lol) get's warped back in time?

Dang, did I really write that months ago? LOL, I just want everyone to know I was pushing my lameass jokes to the max. Back then, that foolish show made me want to barf all over my Sunday night. I just saw it airing on TBS last night. That show could not be any stupider. Some crazy a** girl won for telling the worst joke in history! 10 Gs for making NO one with a brain laugh.
IamGGFan 05-26-2003, 09:52 PM I remember seeing Urkel on Full House. LOL. He was funny in trying to tell Stephanie that she was not a nerdy person for wearing glasses. LOL.
I however, never watch Step By Step. Maybe I did before, but I don't remember as I never watched it often. LOL:lol:

The only reason I saw Urkel on Step by Step was because I was watching Family Matters and he ended up landing in the Lamberts backyard on the picnic table at the end of the Family Matters episode. I guess that was ABC's way of getting Family Matters fans to watch the new show at the time-Step by Step

Yeah he was telling Stephanie to make fun herself first wearing glasses and then the other classmates won't make a big deal about the glasses.

I've seen "Full House" featuring Steve Urkel on WPIX last year. I like to see it again on Nick at Nite soon.
