In the TC book it mentions that Joyce DeWitt and John Ritter were both trying to quit smoking during the run of the show.

For whoever was interesting.. its on pg. 54 of the book with the Jim the Bartender's interview..

"Also, I smoked. I still smoke. So I was always at the other end of the table in rehearsal hall. Ritter and Joyce, they all smoked, and they were trying to quit every other week."

Well that's weird because reading about all of them since I was young, I never heard about them smoking. And I'm shocked Joyce DeWitt smoked because she used to sing and why would she smoke if smoking messes up your voice?? Did Suzanne or Richard smoke?? Did smoking have anything to do with Ritter's health??

Nobody answered my question yet! Did Mrs. Roper smoke? I was noticing yesterday that she had really bad teeth...

She smokes in The Crossing Guard, where she has her monologue when Jack Nicholson walks into the house or wherever they were. She's brushing her black hair ( wig? dye? :shrugs: ) and then he walks in.

*Spoiler’s Alert*

Priscilla’s character (Verna?) is a stripper who dates Jack Nicholson’s character (Freddy). One day, he comes home late and Verna gets mad. She sits down & lights a cigarette. She talks to him about coming home late and whatnot (Oh, there are so many curses! Verna is so much different than Terri) and he starts sleeping. She continues talking and he starts snoring and she starts crying, in frustration, I guess… So, that’s her big moment. Her next big moment is when Freddy is at a strip club that Verna used to work at and she just happened to be there (funny how movies do that). The stripper on stage calls Freddy to the stage. He walks up and passes Verna, who realizes, “that’s why he’s always late”. He was dating this other stripper while he was still with Verna. You could see the lightbulb go on when the camera passes Verna.

 Ya. I agree with you all on being shocked that John and Joyce smoked. I read it in the book, too. I bet that Joyce just smoked for a brief period of time....like 2-3 years during the show. I seriously doubt that she smokes now, because she is still performing on stage. I just can't see her doing that. I remember I read somewhere (and I can't remember where) that Joyce's New Years resoultion for sometime in the 1980s was to pay more attention to feeding her body with healthy things. Smoking is so not healthy, so I bet that may have been part of what she was talking about. ;)

anyway....i don't know about john. I can't see him smoking around his children....so maybe it was just a thing that he and joyce did on the set and when they were together at parties and stuff. Who knows??? BUT, I wish I knew for sure. :D

Probably. Didn't he die of heart disease? Smoking would be the number one cause of that.

Uh-uh. He died of an aortic dissection. It's usually caused by eating too much & the heart gets affected. It's not like he had lung cancer or anything... I don't think smoking caused his death, yet it didn't help him in any way...

Chrissy must have smoked or drank alot of coffee because her teeth looked pretty bad during the run of the show.

And You could really tell Terri smoked because her voice sounded really deep in some recent interview much like Lucille Ball in her later years.

Well, it was the 70s after all. Everybody smoked back then. I started smoking in the 80s when I was 15 watching Don Johnson on "Miami Vice".

In an interview, Suzanne Somers said that she never smoked.

I was surprised when I heard Priscilla Barnes' voice in an interview. It was so low and raspy. On the show, she put on such a cute, high voice.

Didn't the Ropers or the Kids used to smoke weed? Of course, I'm talking about the character and NOT the actors!

Daffyfan2004
06-23-2004, 01:47 PM
Hmmm. I never thought of that, but that's a good point. Where did the weed in the Roper's garden come from originally? It sort of makes you wonder about Mr. Roper's past, or Mrs. Roper for that matter.

I know that this is an old post. I know exactly how John must of felt when he was trying to quit. I remember seeing him in the comedy special' Being Of Sound, Mind, and Body', and during the in between scenes, he was chewing gum like crazy. So apparently, he must've benn trying to quit. I ought to know how hard it is to quit, I used to smoke myself, not anymore though.

As I recall, I think she was a smoker. You can tell my the gravolly (sorry - bad spelling) voice she had too.

Like Suzanne Pleshett - I don't think she still does, but you can tell the damage from her raspy voice.

Almost everyone smoked back in those days. It just didn't have the stigma that it does today so nobody really thought anything of it. You weren't an outcast if you smoked then.

And it only shows on the teeth if you don't take care of them. Regular cleanings will keep them looking like anyone else's and if you're in Hollywood - you get them cleaned regularly (nowadays, most of them have veneers (caps) and whiteners to keep them clean). Look at Brad Pitt - he's a smoker but you'd never know it. There's really no excuse for teeth giving away the fact that you're a smoker if you keep them clean (by a dentist).

It sure ain't easy (and isn't cool like we were led to believe when we were young). Unfortunately I started at age 14 (the younger you are when you start, the harder it is to quit in later life) and I STILL can't get off them - 30 years later!! I lost both parents to smoking (dad massive heart attack and mom with emphysema). It ain't pretty, cool or glamorous! I've tried so many times and so many ways (accupuncture, cold turkey, gum, nicorette, the patch [twice], hyptnosis, Zyban) you name it!

I'm glad today's actors try to hide it as much as possible from the public if they do smoke. That's not something you want to appear as being glamorous to their fans!!

Good for you for quitting!! :clap

Try Wellburton, that stuff is nasty and makes you so sick you don't want to go near a cigerette. I used to smoked and tried everything also to quit doctor gave me wellburton, and it gave me real terrible headaches and throw up, and after like 3 weeks of taking wellburton I had no desire to smoke again.

It may or may not work for you but it worked for me.

Really eh? I'll give it a try! Sounds like it works like "Antibuse" works for alcoholics (makes you deathly ill if you try having a drink) - aversion therapy!

I'll try anything. They say its very tough for some people and I'm obviously one of them. I hate it! And they've raised the taxes on them here in Canada so much it'll put you in the poorhouse to continue to smoke - about $66 for a carton of 8 packs now!

Thanks for the tip!! :)

Even though it seems hard to imagine them smoking, they appearantly did. I remember in the scene of 'She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not' when 'Jack' and 'Terri' are sitting in the boat, you see him playing with his hands a lot. Usually people who are trying to quit have problems trying to find different things to keep their hands occupied(not trying to sound like)... If that's what you were thinking.. shame on you :nonono: ;) .
