1.Why was Carroll O' Connor missing from that episode?

2.Is this episode on the list for the top ten boring All in the Family episodes?

Any episode where the focus is on Mike and Gloria, and not on their conflict with Archie, would be a boring episode. Since Cosby at nite is skipping episodes anyway, this and several other episodes without Archie should have been automatically skipped in the rotation. Why Archie did not at least make a brief appearance I don't know, maybe his contract at the time allowed him to miss a few episodes.

Hm, if I'm thinking of the right episode, Mike's Friend wasn't that bad. Now if we want to get into the really bad eps that I feel are boring, let's talk about the Mr. Klemmer and Judith episode and the episode with Billy Crystal. The BC episode involves BC and his girlfriend wanting to get married or something. Those just put me to sleep, jmo.

Any episode without Archie and Mike together put me to sleep.

I don't think Edith was in this episode either. This was strictly a Mike and Gloria episode. There were a couple of more episodes that featured Mike and Gloria and not Archie and Edith was the one with Billy Crystal and another one besides that one you mentioned.

Edith was in the episode Mike's Friend because Gloria was complaining to her that Mike didn't think she was intelligent enough to sit with him and his friend.

Archie and Edith did not appear at all in the episode with Billy Crystal, which may be the worst episode ever. The only reason to watch is well, because of the trivia value to see Billy Crystal when he was unknown (this was even before "Soap"). Rob and Billy became good friends after this which led to collaborations such as "When Harry met Sally".

I agree, both Klemmer episodes were probably the worst involving Archie and Edith. The gimmick of Jean doing a dual role showed that AITF was on its last legs, something like that never would have been done during its glory days.

Aside from the several episodes missed earlier in 1974, Carroll O' Connor missed one taping due to his refusal to cross a picket line. This was in September of 1974, so, I am assuming that this was the episode whose taping Carroll was absent from. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 45, were picketing CBS; Carroll, having been a trade union man for most of his life, refused to work with strikebreakers.
