For many, it is a time to give up something that they really like or enjoy a time to do penance for your sins. During Lent, Catholics abstain from meat on Fridays, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Lent lasts for a period of 40 days.
~LadyJess~ 03-06-2003, 08:59 PM I follow the no meat on Friday thing very strictly so I don't give up anything else.
Brandon 03-06-2003, 09:02 PM not a darn thing
Kay Scarpetta 03-06-2003, 09:04 PM Nothing....seeing as I'm an Athiest. But before that, I never really did. My parents would have fish on Friday's though
Chocoholic 03-06-2003, 09:10 PM Instead of giving up something for Lent, I always try to do some good deeds, like donating extra food and clothing that doesn't fit me anymore to the needy.
bandito 03-06-2003, 09:16 PM I usually give up drinking.
shavelyLBC34 03-06-2003, 09:44 PM Candy, sweets, chocolate...stuff like that
*PinkLady* 03-06-2003, 09:54 PM Nothing. I'm considering fasting, but that has nothing to do with Lent.
laceyinthesky 03-06-2003, 10:01 PM Is this supposed to keep you from going to hell or something? If not, then why bother.
White_Daisy 03-06-2003, 10:47 PM Nothing, I don't follow Lent or Catholicism for that matter.
Leigh Ann 03-06-2003, 11:46 PM I'm giving up Coke :( . I usually give up either Coke or chocolate. I gave up chocolate last year & it was terribly hard! For Easter, I got mostly chocolate stuff!! :D
Tuesday Weld 03-07-2003, 12:17 AM Nothing, because it doesn't apply to me.
Krisalicious 03-07-2003, 12:21 AM I don't know what I'm giving up yet. I don't really give up things for Lent because I end up doing them again after a few days, lol. Last year though for Lent, I gave up Doritos since they're my favorite snack ever...it was kind of hard.
Sitcomwriter 03-07-2003, 02:49 AM My family isn't at all religious (Well my dad's side but not my mom's) so we usually don't give stuff up or don't eat meat but I didn't eat meat yesterday by accident LOL :p

Any effort you show to repent for your sins and offer your sufferings for God may save you from hell. Lent especially is a time for fasting and prayer. A time to reflect on the suffering Jesus endured for us before he was crucified. His resurrection from the dead on Easter Sunday ,gives us hope of a life after death.

I'm with you. Fasting isn't even healthy.
I'm not Catholic, so I'm eating and doing whatever I want.

it can be...
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 03-07-2003, 04:16 PM I'm not Catholic, but if I was, I'd probably give up a certain food or something. I dont have the willpower for these things. Although, I could very easily give up driving..
Moonlight Lady 03-07-2003, 05:13 PM I'm not giving up anything, I'm not religious.
Swimfan85 03-07-2003, 06:48 PM weed.
Swimfan85 03-07-2003, 06:49 PM or junk food...
White_Daisy 03-07-2003, 06:52 PM How long is Lent?
It's so funny, my friend, Alison, was supposdly giving up meat. So we're sitting at lunch today and I notice that she's got a half-eaten sandwich and she's talking about giving up meat for Lent. I take one look at her sandwich and realize it's smoked turkey and brie (well, i didn't know it was brie, but there was a meat in there). I point it out to her and she got pretty upset because she unknowingly broke her fast.
Georgia's on my Mind 03-07-2003, 07:01 PM nvm
*Marilyn Monroe* 03-07-2003, 07:02 PM I'm giving up cussing. Yeah, so its not food.
Lent is 40 days. From Ash Wednesday (Day before yesterday) to Easter Sunday.

Do you have to give up food, or can you give up something else? You know I'm thinking of the movie...

anything you enjoy...
Georgia's on my Mind 03-07-2003, 07:06 PM and for anyone over 15 i beleive is the age...your only supposed to have three small meals with nothing in between, or fast on Ash wed. and Good Friday.
Chocoholic 03-07-2003, 07:52 PM Fasting isn't required of everyone though. People who have to follow certain diets or do a lot of strenuous activity and stuff like that don't have to fast. I can't really skip a day of eating. I tried fasting a couple of years ago and I wound up passing out. Depriving your body of essential nutrients isn't one of the smartest things in the world to do.

That's good to know. I doubt God wants millions of passed out people all over the planet.

If you can't fast you should still make the effort to eat less than normal....idk...

You can give up anything or you can add something postive to your life, like doing more charitable works or something.
