Okay, so, can someone tell me why hydrogen balloons shrink in the cold (winter--outdoors) and then when you go indoors, it "magically" inflats to it's normal size again? What happens to the hydrogen when it's cold... and where does the air come from to fill it up again?

i think hydrogen contracts in cold because of it's bonds to each other...(it's a bent linear i think) so when it's cold it causes it to all contact closer...and when its warmer they expand

i think that more or less it. when something is cold the particles don't move very much because there is no heat for energy. when something is warm the particles have more energy so they can move a lot faster and then they take up more room because they are all over the place

So.... Is this only with hydrogen?
How come when you fill a balloon with carbon dioxide it doesn't shrink? Or rather, how come it's not as noticable?

Well, first off, I'm sure you mean to say helium balloons as hydrogen is a very flammable gas and they wouldn't just go around filling up birthday balloons with it. (Remember the Hindenberg?) ;)
I think the same would be true for all gasses, but to varying degrees based on the properties of the gas.

I think the same would be true for all gasses, but to varying degrees based on the properties of the gas.
