View Full Version : Actual Songs that Johnny Played
dlemond 03-06-2003, 12:36 PM I'd like to compile a list of all the songs that Johnny played during WKRP's run.
(With the music changes it is difficult to know from the most recent airings)
But only Johnny - not Venus or Moss or a time when someone else was in the booth.
So, please list any songs that you know Johnny played on the show.
Here is a start:
"Queen of the Forest" by Ted Nugent.
"Bad Case of Lovin' You" by Robert Palmer
"Dogs" by Pink Floyd

rough boys-pete townsend(intact)
THATS MY LIST!
jaime weinman could answer this question better than anybody esle!
dlemond 03-07-2003, 12:21 PM I'm pretty sure it was Carl Perkins with Blue Suede Shoes, though that can be easily checked.
And with Hot Blooded, I think it couldn't have been Johnny since Les was getting ready for his date (trying on the wig) and I assume it was in the late afternoon at some point.
Though that can be checked and figured out I suppose.
And yeah, Jaimie is the one who could give us a complete list or the closest we can find to complete.
Jaime?

it was carl perkins version of "blue suede shoes"
it was on DR.FEVER AND MR.TIDE.
johnny fever introduced the song as "blue suede shoes" by elvis presley but in the middle of the song he realizes its the carl perkins version.
he blamed riptide for the mistake.
i remember the quote"riptide can't tell the difference between elvis presley and carl perkins"
or something to that effect.
dlemond 03-28-2003, 01:46 AM I can add three more right now:
Shakedown Street by the Grateful Dead
Hungry Heart by Bruce Springsteen
Duke of Earl by Gene Chandler
APPLEI 03-28-2003, 02:01 AM was shakedown street the song johnny fever played in A DATE FOR JENNIFER?

APPLEI 03-30-2003, 03:58 AM i would like to add three more songs to the list.
TEACH YOUR CHILDREN-CROSBY,STILLS,NASH & YOUNG
RETURN TO SENDER-ELVIS PRESLEY
YOUR SMILING FACE-JAMES TAYLOR
they are from the episode I WANT TO KEEP MY BABY they are replaced in the new sydication package.
dlemond 07-09-2003, 12:02 AM Two more songs Johnny played:
"Love Man" by Otis Redding
(Nothing to Fear But...)
"Book of Love" by The Monotones
(Till Debt Do Us Part)
speedbump 07-15-2003, 05:12 AM Johnny played "Come Together" in one episode, introducing it by saying something like John Lennon's a rock and roll monster.
And in the episode titled Out to Lunch when Herb shares a few drinks with guest star Craig T Nelson, you can hear "Here Comes the Sun" and Paul McCartney's "Every Night" playing in the background. There are some Beatle references for you all.

I do remember the "Come Together" scene.
But I don't remember about the other 2 songs. Was it definitely Johnny who was playing them?
By the way, the WKRP board just passed the 1,000 post mark.
Finally!!!!
speedbump 07-17-2003, 05:01 AM I just threw that in because it related. I don't think they were played by Johnny because Herb and his buddy played by Craig T Nelson are drinking in a bar or restaraunt and those two songs can be heard in the background. They may have had WKRP on the radio or it could have been another station.
Cool about the 1000th post. A nice little milestone for all the WKRP fans who visit. Great job everyone!

"come together" was played in the episode "johnny and jennifers charity".
funny opening scene where les was reporting on a "monster lizard" causing problems in the new england area.
again johnny corrects les!
it was a "monster Blizard" causing problems in the new england area.
the B was out on the teletype machine!
one of the funniest opening scenes ever on WKRP.
Obtuse 07-19-2003, 01:25 AM From Fish Story/Hold Up home video release
Blue Collar Man-Styx (Only the intro organ riff is heard)
Drinking Wine (Spo Dee O Dee)-Jerry Lee Lewis
Whisky Bar-Doors
Another blues-y number I can't remember right now....
Also:
Mercedes Benz-Janis Joplin
Like A Rolling Stone-Bob Dylan
(These appear in "Hold-Up", but are actually played by Bobby Boogie. Presumably they are Johnny's records, however).
Others I remember:
Eagles "The Long Run" (seem to remember Andy running into the booth, excited that Johnny was playing a top-ten hit).
And who could forget the Hallelujah Tabernacle Choir's stirring rendition of "You're Having My Baby"!
Ferris Bueller 08-06-2003, 04:57 AM Also:
Supertramp "Goodbye Stranger" (In the one where the ratings only go up slightly and Andy is none too pleased)
Steely Dan "Peg" (In the "Real Families" episode)
Sly & the Family Stone "If You Want Me to Stay" (in the episode where Johnny tells listeners to dump their garbage in the mayor's front yard to protest a garbage collectors' strike)

Anyone know the name and artist of the song played at the end of the show. And was the Who's music ever featured on the show?

From Jaime Weinman's WKRP Information Site:
Q. Who wrote the closing theme? Who sings it?
A. The closing theme also has music by Tom Wells. The nonsense lyrics were probably mostly improvised by the singer. According to Steve Marshall at the Museum of Television and Radio's WKRP seminar (March 4, 1994), the singer of the closing theme was named Jimmy Ellis.
RamOntheRun 10-23-2003, 02:27 AM i remember Johnny playing "Ready Teddy" by Little Richard before he left the "gotta dance" gig, he also played "Xanadu" By Olivia Newton John & ELO on the show.
"Sweet Soul Music" was played...some Stax guy, Arthur ...something, "Talk To Ya Later" by The Tubes at the transmitter, "The Wait" by The Pretenders, "Arrow Through Me" by Paul McCartney & Wings, "Sympathy For The Devil", Rolling Stones, "Master Blaster (Jammin) , Stevie Wonder, "Youngblood" by The Coasters, "Deacon Blues" by Steely Dan ( same episode as the one "peg" was in- real families)...dozens more other than all the ones previously listed. I used to have a complete list a few years back, but lost it...just going from memory here. Half of these songs have been cut for generic music.
Some tunes Venus played from memory:
"Just The Two Of Us", Billl Withers and Grover Washington Jr.
"After The Love Has Gone", Earth Wind and Fire
"Lively Up Yourself", The Wailers
"She's A Bad Mama Jama", Carl Calton
"Remembering The Rain", Bill Evans ( one of the coolest tracks played on WKRP for me)
"Slow Hand", Pointer Sisters
"Boogie Oogie Oogie", Taste Of Honey was the group (?)
there's a bunch more obviously, thats all i can spit out at this late hour.
good ear on the person who caught "Every Night" by McCartney at the bar with Herb and Craig T Nelson. Other Beatles stuff was a poster of Sgt. Pepper's Lonley Hearts Club Band outside the DJ booth door in an episode, and John Lennon's White Album photo seen in various places.
RamOntheRun 10-23-2003, 02:46 AM Arthur Conley on "Sweet Soul Music"...I know Fever also played at least one Ray Charles song...im gonna go with "What'd I say". also, "Another One Bites The Dust", Queen, a muzak version of "Someone To Watch Over Me" by Gershwin which was sung by a drunk Momma Carlson, some Who song in "The Airplane Show"...well, there's a bunch...
testpattern 11-06-2003, 05:22 PM Seems like I remember Johnny playing a Fleetwood Mac song (maybe "The Logical Song" ???). Any help?

The Logical Song is by Supertramp.
testpattern 11-06-2003, 05:29 PM Sorry . . . had a "Dr. Fever" moment there! Anyway, am I dreaming or did he play "The Logical Song"?
dlemond 11-06-2003, 05:34 PM He might have.
I can almost hear the sax playing in my mind, but I could be way off.
He definitely played "Goodbye Stranger" (by Supertramp) when Andy knocked everything off his desk in Baby, If You've Ever Wondered.
snl75 11-17-2004, 01:59 AM i was watching an old tape of an ep. i have and johnny was playing born before the wind by van morrison
rockandrollmark 11-18-2004, 12:33 PM I seem to remember an episode where Johnny and I believe Andy are hiding in the DJ booth from I think it was Herb (selling insurance?) and "Good Girls Don't" by the Knack was playing.
