I've only been to one taping - Seinfeld. Bear in mind that my experience may not be typical of other shows, networks or studios. But since you asked...

It seemed very much like watching a play. The first 2 rows were (rock-hard) chairs with rows of bleachers behind.

There's an emcee who explains to the audience what will be happening and goes over certain conduct and safety rules. He also has the hardest job of all: keeping us entertained in-between scenes or set/wardrobe changes!

We were there for at least 3 (maybe 4?) hours because we saw 2 episodes - One that was pre-recorded but needed to record an audience response. (This was viewed on a monitor.) The second was performed live.

No, we were not forced to laugh at the lame stuff. They did, however, discourage us from carrying on too much when a character (e.g., "Kramer") entered a scene. If it's too noisy, the actor may have to wait for the audience to quiet down, otherwise the dialogue might not be heard or understood when played back.

After the show, we got to go on-stage and meet the actors (well, at least Jerry Seinfeld). He let us take our picture with him. Thank God I brought my camera! :happyface

About 4 years ago, me and some friends went to a taping of "The Steve Harvey Show". There was a warm-up comedian who kept us entertained during breaks in filming. He also warned us that we may hear a joke several times because of various bloopers. If this was the case, he asked that we laugh as if it were the first time that we were hearing the joke. There were some pre-recorded scenes which were to be edited in for broadcast that we watched on the monitors. I'm not sure what time the taping ended. We left aroung 11 pm (after about 4 hours). I must say that Steve was having an off night, lol. He blew his lines quite a few times. However, it was still a great experience!

Hey Chad, speaking of wrestling show tapings, ECW on TNN (back when it was The Nashville Network) came one town over from me to tape an episode. It was a small gym setting, and I had a prime seat facing the camera. So watching the entire hour long show, it was like looking into a mirror. I've been to a few RAWs and PPVs as well.

PS- did you by any chance go to Curry College? I knew a Chad Doody from Maine who was in my same class (2002).

The episode that was filmed live was about (a) Jerry dating this girl who always wore the same outfit, even in all of her photos, and (b) George helping this couple decide on a name for their soon-to-be newborn.

The pre-recorded one was about, uh...Gee, I hope I remember! How embarrassing. Oh yeah! Elaine was dating this saxophone player (Geez, another "dating" story.) who claimed that abstaining from sex allowed him to excel as a musician. He and Elaine have sex the night before some big talent scout is supposed to see him play at a jazz club. The next night at the club, he can't...uh, perform; the talent scout is in the audience, shaking his head.

I have never been to a taping of any kind, but I would like to go to a 8SR taping someday, that would be so much fun.
