View Full Version : Languages. Which One? Camillian 02-28-2003, 08:50 PM I have to pic out of three languages from Spanish, French, German. Have you tooken any of these what are your thoughts? Which one is more fun? I like Soanish because you use it alot in your life. German is not a romance language so it is much different then French and Spanish. I take Latin but if German was offered at my school I would take that instead. dawsongirl 02-28-2003, 09:11 PM All I was offered was Spanish and French, and I took Spanish because I didn't like French. However, if I was to choose now, I'd pick German. 1) It's more closely related to English. 2) I think it's cool! I'm trying to teach myself the basics. I took French for three years in high school and although now I can understand the language, I can't speak it at all. French that's taught in school is so different from the French that is spoken in France, or French-Canadian, which is obviously spoken in Canada. Also, what I've heard is that if you go to France and try to actually speak French, the French won't talk to you (because we "butcher" their language). So ix-nay on the idea to take Francais. It's a beautiful language, but you won't use it that much. I have a friend who majored in French in college that doesn't even speak French when she goes to France. Go figure! Even though those are the most well known places that speak French, there are dozens of countries in Africa that speak it, as well as a bunch of islands in the South Pacific and Guyana in South Amerca. I've taken Spanish for four years so I can read and write most anything, it's just speaking that's a little hearder for me, but then again, I'm a shy person. I have no problem with Spanish so I probably still would have taken it if I had to start over again. *PinkLady* 02-28-2003, 10:56 PM I like Spanish. I've taken four years of it at school, so I know the language pretty well. I'm not saying this because I'm Hispanic or anything, but you'll benefit more if you take Spanish. I'm talking about REALLY learning the language and not just taking it for the heck of it. Nearly 37 million people in the United States claim to be Hispanic. Thats 13% of the U.S. population. Most of them speak fluent Spanish as well. If you take Spanish and really absorb it you'll be able to benefit more in the work place. No matter what language you take, you'll have better chances of getting a job as opposed to a person without a second language. But communication is really important, and as the Hispanic population grows, the more people will be speaking Spanish and it would be a whole lot easier for them and for us non-fluent speakers to commuicate with each other. So yeah...thats why I think you should take Spanish. :wave: I take Spanish by the way, and I've really benefitted from it. I am able to communicate in both lEnglish and Spanish. I tried to learn French and Spanish and they are very difficult becasue of all the different verbs you need to learn. Mossopp 03-01-2003, 11:52 AM I studied French for 4 years and German for 1. I never studied Spanish at school cos my friends who did said it was bollocks (no offence to any Spanish speakers here). French is the better one to learn out of the 3 IMO. Belgium Benin Burkina-Faso Burundi Cameroon Central African Republic Chad Comoros Democratic Republic of Congo Djibouti Gabon Guinea Haiti Ivory Coast Luxembourg Madagascar Mali Monaco Niger Republic of Congo Rwanda Senegal Seychelles Switzerland Togo Vanuatu all these countries have French as theyre official language. Some Belgians do speak French aswell but it's mostly Flemish. I should know - my Grandmother was Belgian. I also liked it because there were not a lot of people taking it so we got more one on one instruction from the teacher. Most every one else took Spanish so those classes were always filled. I was going to take French too but never got around to it. I suppose you should really take the language that you would most likely be using later on though. Living in the US Spanish would be the most practical one. DetectiveGriffin 03-02-2003, 05:53 PM Ive studied all three - i love the way french flows, and so many german words resemble english words, it can be very easy to say, but spanish was - IMO- the easier of the languages. There are less ways to to say a/an/the in spanish than in german, spanish is usually spoken most frequently in the usa on tv, so you can practice watching cartoons and movies. A lot of it really depends on what your personal interests are. If you plan on retaining the language, many jobs offer extra pay to employees with a decent grasp of spanish.
