View Full Version : Fred and Ethel walking in without knocking!!
desilu #1 09-30-2000, 07:33 AM I Love Lucy is my favorite show ever!! The
only problem I have with the show is the fact
that Fred and Ethel walk into Lucy and Ricky's apartment without knocking. I know
that it is just a show, but they must have
had spontaneous sex even back then! How does
Fred or Ethel know whether or not they are getting busy on the piano or anywhere else?
I can't help but think about this. I know I'm
not the only one! I mean, look at Ricky!! He is SEXY!!!!

I LOVE LUCY is a favorite of mine, too. But, my all time favorites are THE INCREDIBLE HULK and THE COURTSHIP OF EDDIE'S FATHER.
But, the most gorgeous actor, director and producer which ever lived was Bill Bixby (Bill Bixby was gorgeous inside and out).
But, you are entitle to your opinion. And Desli Arnaz was handsome.
I hope ever went okay with your delivery (of your newborn). Congratuluation!
Lucille Ball was a great actress. Vivian Vance was a wonderful and delightful actress to watch, too.
Well, I have often wonder why the Mertzs do not knock. I am not sure how to answer that one. But good luck in finding the answer.

OMG that was so funny Desilu#1! :rotflmao:
Joicetti 02-17-2002, 02:15 AM Yeah they always do walk in without knocking but it really never bothered me. I saw it on some show or something (the 50th Anniversary show perhaps) about how the Vivian Vance/Ethel was the biggest door opener on television. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Anyhow, I just guess it was part of their charm, since they were such good friends that they didn't need to knock...
Hollow 02-17-2002, 05:02 PM They do that alot in sitcoms
dawsongirl 02-17-2002, 08:17 PM Well, according to TV, people in the 50s didn't have sex. I mean, how could they with separate beds?! ;)
People also didn't have toilets.

Yeah, makes you wonder what Lucy was so jealously worried about when Ricky was rehearsing with or having his picture taken with beautiful women.

 There's another thing. No one cheated. It wasn't moral. Of course, it's not great now, but TV doesn't seem to care. ;)
ilovelucyjg15 02-17-2002, 09:57 PM my god! In the 50s you couldn't even say the word pregnent on tv, never mind talking about sex. That was pretty stupid them sleeping in different beds. What was the big deal about sex in the 50s? Were people scared of it or something!?
 :rotflmao: :rotflmao:  :rotflmao: I'm sorry but this thread is cracking me up!

danithang 02-22-2002, 05:26 PM Lol, desilu #1, I just couldn't picture Lucy and Ricky having sex. I know they had Little Ricky on the show, but haven't you wondered when they supposedly conceived. Even in real life I couldn't imagine Lucy and Desi having sex and conceiving two kids, I guess the 50's seem like the stone age to me or something.

You're not the only one. The 50's were a more sexually repressed decade, therefore there was not a whole lot of sex ANYTHING around.
trlyka 02-26-2002, 08:36 PM I too think Ricky was a hunk. My boyfriend isn't from Cuba, but he is from Honduras. As a couple, I think we are a lot like Lucy and Ricky.

Of course they had sex. But if you just watched TV, it would make people think that no one ever had sex. Married couples slept in separate beds, very few couples shared passionate kisses, etc. Sex was just very taboo in the 50s. It wasn't until the free-love movement of the mid-60s and 70s that sex was actually talked about on TV.

Yeah.
And Ethel and Fred sometimes walked in when they were kissing, but nothing major. lol
Tweety 08-17-2003, 05:13 AM wow, it's amazing how we went from the topic of Fred and Ethel not knocking, to a full blown debate about whether people had sex in the 1950s...
I could see Ethel walking into the Ricardo's kitchen without knocking, since she could see that Lucy was there...and Lucy & Ethel probably had a standing thing going for Ethel to join Lucy for coffee every morning....
It does seem that I Love Lucy may be the only show from the 50s in which characters regularly enter their friends' homes without knocking...other than the Nortons entering the Kramdens' apartment without knocking (Hey there, Ralphie boy...oh, hiya Norton)...
I'm sure the Ricardos and Mertzes were just such good friends that they had an understanding that no knocking was required.
Plus, I'm sure Lucy and Ricky probably hung a "Do Not Disturb" sign on their apartment door whenever they were gonna "do it", specifically to keep Fred & Ethel from interrupting...
Wouldn't that just result in Ethel leaning with her ear against the door?
Mickey 08-17-2003, 11:21 AM Leaning with her ear against the door? She'd be downstairs collecting tin cans and mirrors, trying to build a periscope!
Poor Ethel. I think she always wished she was the one married to Ricky!

crazyredhead 08-17-2003, 03:14 PM Poor Ethel. I think she always wished she was the one married to Ricky!
*coughs* she's not the only one! ;) LOL j/k
Ricardos4ever 08-17-2003, 03:25 PM Well, maybe it's better that Fred and Ethel did walk in without knocking. Last time Ethel suggested that she and Fred knock, they overheard Lucy and Ricky "fighting" inside, and everyone ended up with black eyes in the end!
Will and Grace Fanatic 08-17-2003, 11:15 PM It's not unusual for people just to walk in your house when they are good friends. I'd never let people just walk in my house either would my parents. But my aunt has friends who just walk in her house. People are different.
