View Full Version : We Just Had an Earthquake
About half an hour ago we had an earthquake. Pretty weird. I don't know where it came from or how bad it was - it was just a small shake here that only lasted a couple of minutes. I was sitting on my bed, doing my homework and the bed started shaking - I looked up and my bookshelves were shaking and I realized it was the whole building! Some of the pots in the kitchen fell down, and my roommates were pretty jumpy. Apparently you don't get earthquakes in Germany. We talked to the guys in the next building and they felt it too. Kinda scary. Anyone know where this came from? I don't think it started in Freiburg. Also, anyone else been through an earthquake? I know mine was pretty small - but it sure made me jump!
Brandon 02-22-2003, 06:55 PM we had a minor 1 a few months ago. I thought it was cool. The whole house was shaking a little bit. At first, I thought it was the washing machine, but I remembered that we got rid of our old one.
dawsongirl 02-22-2003, 06:56 PM I heard there was a 5 in So Cal. But we don't get many earthquakes in Iowa.
Halex 02-22-2003, 06:58 PM We've never gotten earthquakes in Saskatchewan. I think earthquakes only happen in B.C. near the coast in Canada. Earthquakes sound freaky though. I don't ever want to be in one if I can help it.;
Pitooey 02-22-2003, 07:35 PM WoW......... I felt a small earthquake in NY one day. (Yes........ NY)... I did not like the feeling. I hope everything is okay for you in Germany!

How long ago? Cause there was an earthquake not to long ago in Upstate New York and I felt it. I remember reports that people were feeling it in Maryland.

Yeah, you're not missing anything! You're better off without quakes. They are not fun.
-*Leah*- 02-22-2003, 09:57 PM I dunno. I haven't ever been in an earthquake and I don't think there have ever been any earthquakes in Alabama anyways.

I did not hear about this one. I felt the 5 or so in Calif. The biggest was a 5.4 at 4:19 AM. A few others measured 4.5 and 4.2, and in the 3s. I only felt it a little because I was about 40 miles from the epicenter (3 miles north of Big Bear City).
I've not heard of large quakes in Germany, but in 1755 there was a huge one in Portugal. Italy, Greece and Turkey also have a lot of big quakes.
Yes, I've been through earthquakes... too many to mention (the '71 Sylmar- 6.7, '87 Whittier- 5.9, '92 Landers/Big Bear- 7.3 and 6.6, '94 Northridge- 6.7, etc).
Mysty Eyes 02-22-2003, 11:39 PM Apparently there was another in the Big Bear area this morning, around 4am. I didn't feel it, but my niece was awakened.
Yeah, I've been through lots of them too.
I remember the Whittier one: I was at an early morning dentist appointment having a root canal done. Luckily the dentist was changing the drill bits at the moment of the quake. I hate to think about what would have happened if he had been drilling in my mouth at the time.
Fleet 02-22-2003, 11:49 PM The Whittier quake- it was around 7:40 AM.
The root canal- was the dentist able to finish? Did the power stay on. I've thought about that, too. During my many trips to the dentist, I've wondered what would he do if he was halfway through a filling and the power went out and/or there was a quake. I hope I don't find out. ;)
Kay Scarpetta 02-23-2003, 01:25 AM We don't have them often in MA
AnaheimPMWitch 02-23-2003, 01:44 AM we've had a few here in Oregon but they are usually small ones that dont last long

Blair85 02-23-2003, 03:42 AM If I were ever in an earthquake, I think it would scare the beans outta me! There was one here a long time ago before I was around. It wasn't a bad one-we don't have them around here, thank God! It cracked the wood under my aunt's sink in her kitchen and when I'm at her house & she has to get something out from under the sink, she always tells me about the "big" earthquake, lol. It's a teeny crack.. ;)
Now when my mom was in CA, she was in an earthquake. I think she was in LA at a friend's house & it was an L-shaped house & a quake occurred, but the people in the other part of the house didn't feel it. It scared my mom to death. She ran out of the room to see it the other people were ok & all that happened to them was that their coffee slid a little on the table. The people's pool even got split in half but in the other part of the house nothing happened!
