Do you all like the episode "The Elevator Story"??? This is a very hilarious episode. This was where they all go to the Italian resturant for Edith's birthday and Edith forgets to mail the insurance premium bill and Archie goes to the building and wants to slip it under the door. Anyway,Archie encounters the black guy from Larchmont, the Puerto Rican janitor and his pregnant wife, and the nervous woman whose day wasn't turning out right at all on the elevator. When the elevator breaks down between floors and Archie notices that the janitor's wife was going to have a baby,he says,"You're having a baby",and the black guy says,"You noticed". Then his wife pats Archie on the stomach and asks,"Are You Going To Have Baby Too???"And when they introduce themselves,Archie didn't want to introduce himself, and the black guy says,"What's The Matter,Is It A Funny Name???,and Archie says,no,that Bunker was part of the American history as in the battle of,and then the black guy says, Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Bunker Hill. Then the nervous woman gets scared and asks Archie to hold her,and he told her that he was a married man. Then at the resturant they are waiting on Archie to come back and Edith gets drunk. Then the baby is born in the elevator. Hilarious episode!!!

Yeah! This episode also had the added bonus (for me, at least) of guest-star Eileen Brennan.

I also like the part where Mike, on his way to find Archie, asks Edith the name of their insurance salesman and she replies "Hinklemeyer." After Mike leaves, Gloria asks Edith if she's sure that's the right name. (By now, Edith is quite tipsy from the wine.)

Edith:Oh, yeah I'm sure. It's Hinklemeyer. (long pause) Or Swanson.

Yes, Eilleen Brennan looked quite different and sounded different then as when she appeared later first in the movie Private Benjamin and the TV version of the movie(boy, I wish they would bring back Private Benjamin in reruns).

Another sidenote: The janitor was played by Hector Elizondo, who later played a doctor on Chicago Hope. I think that these were both Eilleen's and Hector's first appearances on a TV show.

Eilleen Brennan has a very prolific carreer. She was struck by a car some years ago and sustained serious injuries. But she kept on going. Here's her bio and more information: http://us.imdb.com/Name?Brennan,+Eileen

I've seen two different endings to this episode. One better than the other. I have no idea why they shot two different ones. It is by far one of the funniest episodes. Hector Elizondo is also great as the Spanish super. But the award goes to Eileen Breenan. Hilarious performance.

> Edith - "Archie always says "That Kraut's always puttin the arm on me!"

That episode's gone down in history. One of the best ones ever made on the show (although I have a soft spot for the Sammy Davis Jr. one too). It's been spoofed and redone many times (anyone remember that episode on Saved by the Bell?)

Love Eileen Brennan and Hector Elizondo. Eileen's a survivor. Only three years after that awful accident she made one of my favorite films of all time: CLUE

:)

Wadsworth: Professor Plum, you were once a professor of psychiatry specializing in helping paranoid and homicidal lunatics suffering from delusions of grandeur.

Professor Plum: Yes, but now I work for the United Nations.

Wadsworth: So your work has not changed.

Black Guy: Does anybody have a newspaper?

Archie: Yeah I got the Daily News.

Black Guy: It figures.

Strangely, I don't find it funny- the elevator scenes seem too contrived and stagey-

I always like Archie's face when the baby starts to come. With out showing the baby you got Archie's thoughts. When the baby doesn't cry immediatly he says Shouldn;t the baby be crying. Good episode.

Let's not forget Archie let them 'borrow' that newspaper for the puertoriquenia mother to give birth- like puppies were about to be born!
And how many times in sitcom history has there been a one-shot very pregnant woman who has NOT given birth before the episode's closing credits?

do you find it annoying when they use the same actor to play different characters on the same TV show? I do. The black actor on this is the same guy who was in the hospital bed next to Archie, but Archie couldn't see him because the partition separating the beds was stuck. Archie became friends with his french-speaking friend, until he saw later that he was black.

---in reality, after Archie saw who it was, he should have said, "oh, its you from the elevator!"
