I notice in quite a few episodes that Bob Newhart only makes a quick telephone appearance...stuck in an airport or away at a hotel, etc.
I'm curious why this happened....was he ill, have a contract dispute? I don't think he was working on another project. Producers don't let their stars take a leave to work on a movie.
The show is lousy without him. The only exception is when Mr. Carlin took Emily to his high school reunion. I think Carlin's the only one who could save the show in Bob's absence.
Does anyone know the story about Bob not appearing on the show?

I agree the shows without him were not as good. It was written into his contract that he was allowed to make only appearences on a few episodes. The reason was that he was wife was pregnant with their daughter and he wnated to spend time with this family.

im not sure if your talking about the same eps but i read that as part of the agrrment to return for the 6th and final ses season bob was alowed to sit out 4 eps thus he only appered for a few minuties in each of thoes eps
