Why was this show cancelled?... It was a great show.. and it only ran for 26 episodes... on a big network liek NBC, it would be like 1 season...

i thought i was readiing a post n the saved by the bell forum and i saw it was salute your shorts, so i had to edit. i cant think of any reason why they would cancel this show other than the executives didnt get the ratings they wanted

Nickelodean had issues. (Well, they still do but in a totally different way than back then.) They used to continually can awesome shows after only producing a small collection of episodes. WHY OH WHY? I'm sure it had fine ratings by Nickelodean standards. Me and all the kids I knew at the time watched it. Remember that show "Fifteen?" That was on during the time "Salute Your Shorts" and then some. That show ran on and on for 4 seasons. I highly doubt that had more ratings than "Salute Your Shorts."

Fifteen was a show that began on Nick the same time Welcome Freshman appeared. They both started in 91, and Fifteen lasted 4 seasons. It was suppose to be like a soap opera for the junior high and high school kids. I watched it a little, but I could not believe that it could have more seasons than Salute Your Shorts. See, even you didn't know what Fifteen was!! It stunk by comparison to other Nick shows.

I think they canceled it because politicians spoke out against Budnkick and Donkey Lips because they thought they're names promoted un-ethical messages and demoralized the overall population of America

"fifteen", which probably obviously didn't get better ratings than SYS, was probably renewed and renewed because it was cheaper to produce, as was all Nick's game shows.

You're right, I remember that Fifteen was taped at Nick Studios. When my family and I went on the Nickeloden Studios tour, we passed by some big windows that looked down onto the set of Fifteen.

I did notice Salute your Shorts location was definately not an indoor shows. I really liked the show, although I was born in 1990 they showed the show for many years because it was on when I was about four and I would watch it. I vividly remember it - they must have not filmed all the episodes in a row. I bet if I saw right now today - Welcome Freshmen or Fifteen I would remember them -but it's not ringing any bells to me right now.

Even so, Nick usually does have issues when it comes to good quality television. They always were that way and they probably will always be.

It was cancelled because Nick got the new studios at Universal(which are no longer there) and didn't want to pay the money to have shows that are filmed elsewhere.

Fifteen was so annoying. I watched it, when nothing else was on. I think on Sundays......

In the 1980s, many Nickelodeon shows were filmed in New York City and a few were filmed in Canada as the network had no official production home until the 1990's. Many former NICK actors have always said the same thing. "Kids like repetition and familiarity so you can forever rerun shows hence most only lasting 26-60 episodes. You Can't Do That On Television was running out of steam and becoming increasingly dated by the end of its run in 1990 so NICK pulled the plug and started searching for a new comedy series which is how ended up with Roundhouse and All That. All That was the first show to have a ton of episodes, I think YCDTOTV had close to 100 but it took them 11 years (1979-1990) with most episodes being filmed from 1979-1986 and a handful in the last years.

Salute Your Shorts was a great summer filler and the problem looking it as an adult, you really couldn't make but so many episodes of the series. How many times would the kids go to the same camp? I think it was good that it was a notable short series. Truth be told, it probably only had one more season left in it. Kids age and many of them were to be in the summer job phase. I can see ZZ being a camp counselor but she was really not a character that would kept people coming back. Like another poster said, there was no breakout star and everyone played off each other.

According to Tim Eyster, who was Sponge, after the second season, MTV bought out Nickelodeon and wanted to use the money towards their newest show at the time, Beavis and Butt-head. They figured that new SYS episodes wouldn't be a part of their "newer" Nickelodeon network. Granted, if you want to get technical, MTV Networks has always owned Nickelodeon from the start. Nickelodeon, then Pinwheel, was originally created and owned by a company called Warner-Amex Satellite Entertainment. Then in 1986, WASE was bought out by Viacom and renamed MTV Networks.

Another likely reason for why SYS ended so soon is cast was getting too old and no longer seemed believable as campers, especially Blake Soper, Michael Bower, and Danny Cooksey, who were 19, 17, and 17 respectively during the show's second season. They looked old enough to be camp counselors. Plus, the growing actors probably wanted to do different projects rather than be stuck on Nickelodeon, a kid's network.

Not only that, Nickelodeon more than likely could no longer get access to Griffith Park, where it was filmed.

What a blast from the past. I don’t even remember the show Fifteen that I was talking about when I was 19 on the first page. I do remember Salute Your Shorts. I was bummed Erik MacArthur left because I had a crush on him lol. I kept hoping he’d return later, but he didn’t, and then the show got the ax. I recognized him in Pleasantville years later, which was pretty cool, but by then it was all about Paul Walker (RIP).

Some foreshadowing when I wrote how bad Nickelodeon was. We now know how bad it got.
