They must've picked a random spot in the earth's orbit and startded counting. Also, over the years, as the moon has moved aprroximately a few millimetres away, the time on earth is being altered, but scientists won't revise the calendar, we could have five minutes more on our years. Each year we add on nano seconds, so much that another zodiac sign was formed. Also- there's an advertisement saying a penny spinning on it's side hel[ps keep big ben's time accurate!
