UPN to End Kids Programming
UPN, as of Sept. 1, will no longer provide kid-targeted programming
to its affiliates, allowing UPN outlets to fill those hours with local
programming, Megan Larson reports.
UPN, which confirmed the move Wednesday, currently carries 12 hours of
Walt Disney-produced programming per week, which runs on weekdays and
Sunday mornings. From September 2002 to January 2003, UPN's ratings among
kid 2-11 on Sundays are down 13 percent, to a 1.3, and down 19 percent
among kids 6-11, to a 1.3.
Though never considered a large player in the kids marketplace, UPN's move
reduces the supply of kid offerings available, leaving ABC/Disney,
Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Kids WB the main sources for kids
entertainment.
