I'm sending about...a dozen, or I want to. I just have some questions for people who have sent them.
1. Computer or Hand written?
2. How do you address them? Mr, Mrs. Ms. or something else? Do I use "Dear?"
3. Do they automatically send you an autographed pic or do you have to ask for it?
4. Besides gushing out your obvious love for them, what else can you possibly say?

Ive sent kelly osbourne alot of weird stuff...lol she must think im a freak.

2. How do you address them? Mr, Mrs. Ms. or something else? Do I use "Dear?" i just put "kelly osbourne" on the envelope, and i usually put "hi kelly" insteada dear kelly, but dear is fine.
3. Do they automatically send you an autographed pic or do you have to ask for it? some celebrities do.
4. Besides gushing out your obvious love for them, what else can you possibly say? i usually tell kelly about what my favorite songs of hers are, my kelly wall, if im gonna get an autograph of her on ebay or somethin, stuff like that.

I've sent out several fan letters. Here's my answers:

1. I type mine. I have terrible handwriting! LOL
2. It depends on the age of the person you're writing to. Like, when I wrote to Mary, I put "Dear Ms. Moore" but if I was writing to someone around my age, I'd just address them by their first name.
3. I always ask at the end of the letter so it doesn't look like that's the main focus of your letter. You're mainly writing to tell them you like them, then you subtly say you'd like an autograph.
4. You can talk about how their work has had an influence on your life, talk about specific things they've done, like a movie they did, instead of just their work in general. It makes you sound more like a real fan than just someone who wants an autograph. Also it never hurts to include basic info about you, name age, how long you've been a fan, etc.

Before you write the person, I'd recommend going to http://www.stararchive.com and looking them up there. That way you have some idea what you're getting into.

That's my advice.

Here's the letter I intend on sending to Anson Williams

It seems strange to call you “Mr. Williams” since I’ve been watching you on TV for years and have always known you as “Potsie.” But “Potsie” would mean I’m talking to my dream and not to the man who played him. “Anson” would be too personal. So I will solve this by not mentioning your name for the rest of the letter. My name is ________ ___________ and I am a 15 yr old girl from New York. That’s all you need to know about me because I’m just going to talk about you from this point on.
Now I’m sure you’ve received millions of letters from girls pouring their hearts out to you and this may look no different. But it gives me such a thrill to be able to do that. Knowing that you’re reading this letter is all that I could ever want now. I suppose there’s no logical reason for me to say “I love you” when I don’t even know you. I’ll confess that I love Potsie since I do know him from years of watching Happy Days. The first episode I saw was “They Call it Potsie Love.” Needless to say, I wished I was Joanie. After hearing your voice, I thought you were the most wonderful man on the planet save for my Father. Over the years, I watched every single move of yours and designed a Potsie from my dreams. You can say that I’m a stalker without ever having met you, but we have plenty of them these days.
At this point, I don’t know what else to say except that I’m the biggest Happy Days fan in my school (not in the world, I can never hold that honor). I’ve seen every single episode at least ten times, except most surprisingly, I never manage to catch the first one. Unfortunately, something always happens to me that day that prevents me from watching it. I hope to catch it the next time around on TV Land.
I’ve mentioned so much about Potsie, but I’ve never asked about you. I have millions of questions waiting. But the first one will involve Potsie. A writer from Happy Days came onto this online message board that discusses the show and he said that you were most like your character. Is that true? Because if it is, I probably will run over to your house and stand there till you agree to marry me. Now I’ve probably discouraged you from answering honestly. I promise I won’t stand in front of your house; I need to go to school and college so I can become Secretary-General of the U.N. My next question is predictable, how was it on the Happy Days set? I’ve always wondered what it would be like to wander around the Cunningham house set with characters from the show. Next, I’d like to know more about you. What does your name mean? What was your childhood like? Did you have a mean dad like Potsie did? How did you manage to get through the Happy Days years knowing that there were millions in girls in love with you? Do you believe that Ralph Malph missed Potsie too much while in Greenland (one of my friends did some research on a base camp in Greenland for me and found out that some lonely soldier had carved furniture out of ice in a cave for a joke)? It sounded like a Ralph Malph kind of thing to do).
I’m not going to end this letter with declarations of love since you’ve already heard me do it, and once is more than enough. But I just want to say that I will always remember you and your character. One day, I’ll be something big like Secretary-General and I’ll always remember the show that helped me through all of life. Happy Days makes my teenage years a lot easier to bear. You, personally, have helped me through your character. Potsie Webber was a very important part of my life. He was and still is the boy I have always loved. And you had the incredible honor of playing him. Nothing could possibly make you a better person in my eyes.

I was thinking of sending Amy Davidson one or maybe the Cast of Whose Line. Do they actually write back? and how long does it usually take?

I'm quite a newbie at fan letters. I had a system worked out with Cathy and we just sent our first fan letters out. I'll answer the questions that I know.

1. Computer- I have such sloppy handwriting, if you ask me. I posted a sample of my handwriting in the thread that Rainman started about him getting a reply from the guy from that show he likes. Yeah, basically that thread became the fan letter random post.

2. I put Dear Mr. Shatner or Dear Ms. Struthers, etc.

3. I asked and sent the picture I wanted them to autograph. Just sent it out the 7th so haven't got any replies back yet.

4. My answer is kind of weird, so I'm not even gonna answer. I posted my Shatner sample letter in that thread I was talking about above and if you look at the letter, you'll see I started talking about anything. I mentioned one part in his letter about my favorite movie he was in. I said it was 'Go Ask Alice'. I seen the movie in my Psychology class and how I hated that class so much, and seeing 'Go Ask Alice' was the high point of being in the class.

Well, I answered that one anyway.

Care of the yet to patented Jenny and Cathy system...

1. Handwritten if you have decent handwriting. It's a bit more personal. But you do want them to be able to read it.

2. I called him Mr. Dawson. And yeah, I opened with Dear Mr. Dawson...

3. I sent a photo and asked him to sign it at the very end of the letter

4. First I highlighted my favorite projects of his, then I talked about non Hollywood stuff, like how I liked his humanitarianism.

Here's some advice. If you have seen and like something they're in that's a bit rare, and mainstream fans wouldn't be likely to know about it, mention it. That's the sign of a true fan

Some are even quicker. Check out Walter Koenig on Star Archive. He is really quick.

hmmm I have a question. If you write a fan letter to someone, will they actually write a letter back to you answering your questions or do they just give you the autographed pic and thats it?

It really depends on the star. Some are more dedicated to their fans than others. That's why I recommend Star Archive so much. You get an idea what they're like b4 you write to them.

You should put Jean Simmons. That's what I do: put the whole name. And, you should also include a SASE (self addressed sealed envelope) too.

Yeah, Jean Simmons is fine. I addressed mine Mr. Richard Dawson, but I don't really know why.

I haven't written any fan letter, but I am in Dale Earnhardt Jr's fan club and you can send him a question and he answers them every Friday. Once I have my questions for him I will send them to him.

If it works at all like when I got Mary's autograph by e-mail, you e-mail and say something like, "Hi my name is Kristen. I'm a big fan. I'd really like an autograph. My address is (insert address here)." Feel free to alter that script to meet your needs. ;) Getting autographs that way is the best, b/c you don't even have to pay a cent in postage!

yeah It did! thanks!

I have emailed a couple of fan letters. One to an author and another one to an actress. In both I just stated that I really admired their work . And that's about all I said except to ask questions about something. I'm pleased to say that in both cases my letters were immediately answered. One of them in under an hour! It was pretty cool. Just be polite and complimentary without gushing. That's how I did it!:)
