View Full Version : Nervous Newbie
Agent 13 02-05-2003, 02:16 PM Hi,
I'm a nervous newbie. All of the folks that have kindly emailed me offering taped shows for money are either charging what I deem as an awful lot and/or won't take PayPal. With PayPal, I am more comfortable sending money, obviously.
I'm skiddish about sending off a check/money order when there is not a feedback system here, as with eBay (please correct me if I'm wrong in this).
Also, what is a typical price per episode that folks charge? (Today, I received an offer of $20 for each slp tape [Ozzie & Green Acres]...out of my price range.)
Meanwhile, I'm trying to work on getting all of the shows I have logged somewhat so I know what I have to trade with. I have 500 tapes, but as with the almighty dollar, I need just one more!
After contemplating this thoroughly, these are the shows I'm looking for:
Addams Family
Donna Reed
My Three Sons
Patty Duke
Munsters
Green Acres
Family Affair
Farmer's Daughter
Mr. Ed
Ozzie and Harriet
Father Knows Best
Real McCoys
Land of the Giants
Thank you ever so much!
Jen
Nanny Fine 02-05-2003, 03:02 PM It's almost a trust thing I guess. You could post a request on the board for good traders and people who have had good experiences can post the names of the traders so that you have a basic idea.
I've had successful trades with Third Watch Fan (great guy!), Tape Trading, Secret Defender, Mickey (someting, MSN or something) as well as in the works with several others.
As for the amount charged, it depends on the person I think. I was a little irritated to have someone offer me "Small Wonder" for $170. Normal people just do not have that kind of money and all I want is to see the TV show. Now I know there is recovering expenses (VCR, tapes, etc) and I don't have a problem with that but $170 is ridiculous.
RollerGirl 02-05-2003, 05:23 PM Agreed...$170 is unreasonable. Ideally, $10!! hehe :D Realistically, $15-$20 seems to be the minimum asking rate as of late.
I can understand your apprehensions. I'm somewhat weary of tape trades too. Funny thing is I've never once been stiffed *knocks wood* but I can't help remembering the old saying "There's a first time for everything." ;)
I'm a safe trader but, unfortunately, I don't have any of the stuff you're looking for.
MidnightRose21498 02-05-2003, 05:40 PM Personally I think $15 a tape is a little too much. The only time I pay for tapes like that is on ebay from a guy who worked on the set of the cancelled soap, Another World, and is selling tapes legally because the show gave him the tapes and told him to do whatever he wanted with them. That't the only time I even pay for a tape period because I loved that show and was extremely disappointed when it got cancelled. This guy is trustworthy and I've gotten some of the tapes before and considering how old the show is, the quality was pretty good.
I'm sticking to trades. I'm not paying money or selling any tapes other then buying the AW tapes as he puts them out on ebay. I've gotten some bad tapes in exchange for my good ones in some trades and as much as I was disappointed then, I would be more disappointed if I had paid for it. That does leave a dilema for those who are looking to get a particular show but don't have what the other person wants. I don't know how you'd resolve that problem.
Have you guys ever sent what you thought was good quality tapes and gotten crap in return? What did you do about it? I kept my mouth shut and figured I may have deserved it for going by what the person said was "good quality".
Lucy1 02-05-2003, 07:41 PM Hi, I am also new and I also found some people asking very high prices. Then one of the members recommended "Third Watch Fan" and I did buy several Golden Girl tapes. I sent him a moneyorder. He does seem very nice.
He emailed me when he received my money and then again to say they are in the mail.
I still have to see how good the quality is but so far so good.
I have a question for you. I noticed on your list you have the"Farmers Daughter" I have the movie with Loretta Young. It's wonderful. Is this the same? Is she in the show? And when was it on tv?
Also, are you able to sell or trade? If it is with Loretta Young I would love to own one.
Lucy
Lucy1 02-05-2003, 08:40 PM Hi, I am so sorry, I told you I bought tapes from "Third Watch Fan". I was wrong it was "Rosenylund". This shows you how new I am, I don't even know who I'm buying tapes from. But, as I said before so far so good, I am very happy the way they communicated with me.

TVJunkie101 02-05-2003, 08:50 PM I've had MANY succesful trades here and off the boards. I've not ONCE been ripped-off, and I've been trading for a little less than a year.
I never charge for tapes, nor will I buy, UNLESS, I absolutely have to. I usually will just ask for $5 and that goes for shipping, and possibly the purchase of the blank tape. So, I get NO money in return, which suits me fine because that's not why I tape tapes. I tape for myself, and for trading. I HATE to purchase or ask for money for tapes. I think even $10 is too much. $5 or $4 is more than enough, IMO. If I don't have something someone wants, they usually ask for cash, but I suggest always try sending them the exact amount of tapes needed, maybe toss in an extra one; but don't go for "oh, 3 tapes for 1, etc." that's ridiculous, LOL.
RollerGirl 02-05-2003, 09:23 PM Shawn, you're a trader's dream come true! :D I mentioned $10 being the ideal only because, honestly, I've not ever been charged less than $10 so I wasn't aware anyone was doing it for less than that. Good to know!

LOL; good to hear. I just say $5 because when trading, you shouldn't be doing it for a profit. I'll write more later...
Agent 13 02-08-2003, 03:11 PM I had someone email me and ask for my want list. He wrote back and believe it or not, was charging $40 per slp tape. His email address started with Scorpian, and I'm only assuming it was some sort of joke. Sigh...

RoseNylund 02-09-2003, 09:55 PM It's a total judgement call. (And yes Lucy, aka tealady2, it was me :) ) There have been so many times I would flat trade with someone and couldn't believe the quality in return. I consider myself someone of a perfectionist, and sometimes I would get tapes that hardly had any sound. I'm weary of sending tapes to someone who says, "I don't send tapes until I get yours." That kind of worries me unless they have a glowing reputation. I think what's the most difficult is having things other people want and they have nothing in return to trade. The offer of paying for the tape is fine and all, but when tens of people e-mail you, and you're doing it just for convenience with no trade in return, it gets very time consuming.
