According to Teletext (at least that's where I read it), Frasier creator David Lee does not and would not approve of the show dumbing down into a soap opera:
<David Lee has told fans that the "powers that be" at NBC want to boost its popularity with stunts.
<Lee admits: "We at Frasier have been under increasing pressure by the newer PTB at the network to turn the show, for want of a better word, into a soap opera: 'We need big events. Weddings, deaths and babies', they say.
<"The cry is also deafening for bigger stars. We say that Frasier doesn't really work with the movie star casting they so desperately want.
<"They reply: 'Friends does it. Will And Grace does it'. Our response has been to listen, smile and ignore them so far."
<Lee says he is being put under pressure to have Frasier and his radio pal Roz Doyle become an item.
<He has e-mailed fans telling them: "It's okay to tease or to follow up on something set up in the beginning. But to have Roz and Frasier end up together would be, to me, anathema.
<"And while I'm ranting I hope you never see another baby on this show."
What does everyone think? He is absolutely right in my opinion, especially about the Roz thing. I hope the executives listen to him.
