View Full Version : I felt so sorry for Gary Coleman on Star Dates
TVFactFan 02-03-2003, 01:13 AM I watched star dates tonight and could not believe it. I could not believe Gary was rejected by both girls. What a shame. Then he was looking sad in the back of the jeep. If they know Gary is short why would they pair up with a female who is 5'3 and taller? Any other thoughts on Gary's date?
Brad Russ 02-03-2003, 02:55 AM Well after hearing your description of the date, all I can say is I'm glad I missed it. I can't say that I'm surprised though. Iv'e seen a few of these dating shows in the past and they are all very superficial. You can have the nicest guy in the world appear on one of these shows, and the women they get always seem to find something they don't like about them. If they didn't like Gary for who he was, then that's they're problem. I'm sure there's someone better out there for him.
DarleneIllyria 02-03-2003, 03:12 AM Crap! I missed it. Well, I'm kind of glad I missed it. If Gary looked that sad towards the end of the date, I would probably cry. Yeah, I know that sounds goofy but whenever I see someone sad I just can't help feeling sad, too.
I didn't see it but it sounds like I would have felt bad for GAry too. Those date shows can be brutal.
Camillian 02-03-2003, 10:45 AM I missed it too.

Hmm, I guess I could watch the main bit and then just turn the channel towards the end. Thanks for the info, Solomon.
Brian Damage 02-04-2003, 03:05 PM Did he actually go on the dates or did the women reject him flat out?
Either way, I know for a fact that most dating shows are rigged. I used to work for a modelling agency in NY and the producers of these shows would contact us to provide them with people. I mean did you ever wonder why all these people were beautiful?! It's so phony.
JethroSimpson 02-04-2003, 04:41 PM That's really unkind he was rejected, to even appear on a show like that must be real embarrasing for him.
Pitooey 02-04-2003, 05:59 PM I hate to say this but, maybe they should've paired him with at least one short gal.
It's not fair that they gave him 2 taller gals.

Yes he went on the date and the girl ran up the steps before Gary had a chance to walk her to her door. While she was running, Gary said-"wait, where are you going I haven't walked you to your door yet" and she responded-"BYE-Goodnight-that's okay" What a shame-It comes back on tonight at 9;30pm on E!

Did you see the closing credits when the first girl said she wanted Gary to be her little puppet? It was in the back seat.

That first girl upset me too. It was weird though how she reacted at the end of the date, because before that she actually seemed to be enjoying herself. I think Gary even got the impression that she was having a good time. It wasn't until she went into the bathroom and called Gary self centered that I even had any idea that she wasn't enjoying herself. And then of course at the end, not even letting Gary walk her to her door was just downright disrespectful. I thought Gary came off as a real cool, nice guy myself. Sure he may have kind of a negative outlook on life, but can those girls really blame him? Look at all he's had to put up with in his life. Personally if I were a girl I think I would have really enjoyed myself with him.

Yeah, I agree. He was really nice throughout the whole show. I would've enjoyed myself with Gary too.
Brad Russ 02-05-2003, 04:35 AM Well hey, Gary did say he enjoys computers, and even mentioned having his own business I believe. So maybe one day he'll stumble across this site and meet himself a nice girl. I doubt that'll happen since he obviously hates the show, but you never know.
I did think the second girl was pretty nice for the most part. I was a little upset at how her mother started laughing, almost in a mocking way when she saw Gary's picture, but atleast the second girl didn't insult him the way the other girl did. I think the only reason Gary did the show to begin with was because he wanted some exposure. Hopefully next time he's on tv it'll be on a show like Friends, or Will & Grace. He deserves better then to be mocked on some lame E! show.

Hey Brian, it comes back on tonight at 12:30am and tomorrow at 10pm on E!.
Brian Damage 02-05-2003, 08:46 PM Hey thanks Solomon! :)
Brian Damage 02-06-2003, 03:17 PM Yay! I finally saw Star Dates with Gary Coleman.:) I may be in the minority when I say this, but Gary wasn't exactly the perfect gentleman either. He was acting a little weird. I mean I understand him acting weird because he admitted to never being in a relationship with a girl. However, he didn't want to share his food with one girl and got really peeved at the other girl when she beat him in a race. Gary has got to share some of the blame here.

Brian did you understand the ending of the first date when the first girl ran up the steps? Where was she coming from when she ran up the steps I thought they were together.
Impressions 02-06-2003, 08:42 PM I watched it, but I'm not surprised, Gary Coleman wasn't ready for a date. He has never had a date in his life, except for this one, considering this was his first date. He has been spending mostly his time alone, so you can tell that being with another person may not always work out. However, You never know what you're going to expect from your first date, or what will happen, but it turns out that both of his dates rejected him. But you can't just pair someone up together and expect things to happen, for instance they were more like a blind date. Not to mention, but both of these dates were also tall, which as you can tell may not work, LOL.
Both of the girls complained that he talked a lot, and that he stressed over the small things and I don't think these two dates suited Gary, both of them didn't have anything in common with him. You can't always find the perfect match, and hooking these two dates up with him, your going to get the wrong chemistry.
These shows can be a real heartbreaker, and there's always something negative you can find in them.

He was out of the limo talking to the camera man and I guess that she was inside the limo. She was sprinting up those stairs though.

But I remember him saying to the cameraman, Oh Boy here she comes-So I guess that was her getting out of the limo? I was trying to figure out where she was coming from. So the biggest misake he made was leaving his date to talk to the cameraman.

I hear where you're coming from, but I don't agree. As far as Gary not wanting to share his food, that's totally understandable to me. Who would want to share they're food with someone on a first date? That seems a little forward for a first date if you ask me.
And as far as him getting angry about the girl beating him in the race, I think his frustrations ran deeper than that. Sure he overreacted a bit, but after watching the second date again if you watch it carefully the girl seemed to be rolling her eyes alot, and disrespecting Gary through body language. Her disrespect may have been a little more subtle then the other girls, but it was still obviously there. I actually can't blame Gary for getting a little angry, Afterall in the first date he was humiliated, and in the second date even though the second girl was nicer she still was being pretty disrespectful.
Another thing that really annoyed me was all the short jokes the two women were making. After seeing these dates I wondered to myself do these girls know Gary has a kidney problem, and that's why he's so short? If they knew that and mocked him in spite of knowing that, I feel sorry for them.
But anyway I agree with Impressions. Gary just wasn't ready for this. And he especially wasn't ready to have this date on National tv. Hopefully he'll have better luck next time. Give him a real girl, and not some model wannabes and I'm sure things'll go much better for him.

If you saw the ending credits, why was gary playing alongwith the first girl in the back seat of the jeep when he was acting like a puppet. That's what the girl said he reminded her of and he played along with it. Very stupid on Gary's part

I make fun of myself all the time, it doesn't mean I want other people to. Sometimes people just laugh along, and play along to keep from crying.

Yeah, and that is so screwed up. I look at Gary Coleman and I just see a person. Who cares if a guy is short, tall, skinny, fat, whatever. I mean, if you meet this guy and you can't get it out of your mind that he's a short person and you can't have fun with the guy because of that, it's messed up. What if the guy is your soul mate? Geez, you just showed him the door because you can't get over the fact that he's short.
If I put myself on a national tv dating show and I know that millions of people are watching me, yeah that's def. gonna hurt how I naturally act. I could be this fun loving person when I'm not on tv, but if you put me on tv I might shy up and get in my little shell. Anybody get what I'm saying?
Brian Damage 02-07-2003, 03:02 PM I totally understand where you're coming from, but I still feel that Gary just doesn't know how to act in front of a woman. Especially, since the girls weren't celebrities like himself. Gary refuses to talk about Diff'rent Strokes and that's what the women only know him from. It was a difficult situation I'm sure. I just think Gary is a little too bitter in his life.
JethroSimpson 02-07-2003, 07:32 PM It has to be remembered that the show could have been edited to fit the way the showmakers wanted Gary to be represented, if they had a lot of laughts together that may have been cut out and just the bad stuff get show- but I could be wrong since I obviously haven't seen it.
If he had little dating experiance then going on national television on a date is just a disaster for trouble.
But I agree with the rest of you, the whole size thing is totally stupid and if people are too stupid to only care about size then Gary is better off without them.
Still...I didn't see it so I'm just going by what's been said. Date shows tend to be shallow and combative like that. I guess that's supposed to be entertainment. Gary is short, the girls had to have already know that so why'd they have to harp on it?
I think many celebrities would just as soon not go on and on with a date or new friend about their public life and what they are famous for, whether their proud of it or not. If the girls couldn't understand that simple request by Gary then they were lacking in social skills themselves. I know from experience that you can spend a considerable amount of time with a celebrity without saying almost anything at all about their celebrated past or present, and that is just fine with them. That's a more real one on one way of getting to know one another.

Well the girls didn't know who they were golng on a date with. The host of the show-StarDates, gave both girls a sealed enevelope with the picture of their date inside. So when the pulled it out, they found out it was Gary Coleman. By the way, it comes on again tonight on E! at 9:30pm

No she didn't cheat, Gary just overeacted. I didn't see what the big deal was. If she won, she won, Gar was supposed to win her heart not the stupid race.

To me the height thing was not the big issue. The girl that ran up those steps was scared IMO. Gary has still needs to let some stuff go. Harping about how the show ruined his life is not going to make things better. I think it could have been a more successful date had he been more positive.
The second girl was pretty decent. I did not think it was that cool to be making those jokes, though. "Where is the little guy?" said the mother of the girl. I thought that was wrong. However the second girl was nice to Gary and he should have taken her advice about letting some stuff go, Instead, he says "The only advice she could give me is how to get on another TV Show".
Kitt, sorry, man but uh, I think he could have done better with the dates had he been more positive. I do agree that the girl who ran out on him was rude and that was somewhat humiliating but I think it was the negative attitude that scared her off and since he thought things were going good, he probably would have asked her out again and I think she was scared of that happening. No Doubt!
And it's so obvious that the first not for Gary anyway since she left him hanging like that. He actually never had a relationship. How sad.
Brian Damage 02-12-2003, 03:28 PM He also could've picked some better dating spots. I mean taking a date to a toy train club and a go cart park are pretty cheesy.

I know he's a train enthusiast but that's the kind of thing you'd share with a girl after she takes a shine to you. If she ever does.
ThomasE 02-12-2003, 03:59 PM I just don't think he should have said that the girl was given favor because of her beauty. I would have asked if she had a particular spot that she'd like to go to?

I have to agree with you. Two bad choices to take a date. What was he reachng for in the back seat when he was on the second date and he was hanging on the back seat. I was like-what is he doing.

I would say that very peculiar for a 35 year old.

Now we know why he struck out in the love department. If this show was a sample of how he is with women, it is NOT a wonder why he remains a virgin.
Even so that is his business.
It is obvious he was not a very good date either (from what I remember of this episode) because he (again) harped on the negative stuff in his life and show business, etc.
