I watched the episode two's a crowd and really enjoyed it since it was no Gloria or Edith. I only watched AITF to see Mike, Archie, George and Lionel but can someone tell me why Mike was very sad at the end after Archie told him his story?

The reason why (I think) Mike was sad was because he felt bad about ridiculing Archie all those years, when not knowing his past and what it was like. Hearing that story about Archie's father and his childhood, struck a cord inside him, and he began to realize why Archie became the way he was...it was because of the way his father had been and that's all Archie knew and he thought it was right. Hope this helps. :)

i figured it was the part about Archie being locked in the closet by his father for 7 hours and a little of how his father felt about minorities.

I believe it was for all of those reasons (including what KayEn78 noted).
