I live in Central America and have contact with this mith before it was known in US. The first cases were in Puerto RIco and Dominicana and soon it spread to Mexico and Central America and even Spain too. There was a funny coincidence between the chupacabras sightings and the latin channel Telemundo, where the show "Ocurrio Asi" of Telemundo was broadcasted soon the chupacabras was sighted, i mean that was almost sure people who want their 15 min of fame kill their chicken and thats it: they were a chupacabras victim on TV.

In this region it isnt common to hear about this kind of monsters there are other like El Comelenguas (the tongue eater), La Descarnada (the skinless one) etc. but all of them are proved to be false. I think the Chupacabras its the same kind of legend but with no doubt one more profitable.
