Did they ever say why the guy who played John Burns left Taxi after the first season? i know the character disappeared without explaination.
Personally, I don't think the John character ever left. Since he was so boring, he must have just faded into the background and been forgotten. Either that or Louie ate him  <I can be cruel, I know :D >
No offense to John Burns fans, but I found the character pretty boring and unmemorable.

I agree that the John character was dull and boring. Even his wife was bland. The producers must've realized that and let him go.(Just guessing.)

IMHO, the show got much better when they added Reverend Jim.

I loved Jim in the yellow light episode, and a couple of others, but he annoyed me sometimes. He was better than John though.

I always thought of John (besides being lame) as the viewer character- we could imagine we were him.
Why? Because he really wasn't a part of the group and seemed to be an observer amongst them. Like us the audience.
He seemed like one of the viewers imagining himself in this world and hanging out with these people.

Since his last episode was the one where he wrecked cab 804, maybe Louie fired him for that. Of course that wouldn't be the offical reason for why the character disappeared. I liked John Burns (Please don't attack me), but I like Jim a lot better.

The guy was lame. Adding Jim was like removing water and adding a good burgundy from a menu.
